AS lockdown continues to ease and a different type of normal returns, many small businesses will be looking for new ways to promote themselves on and offline and to plan their strategy for the year ahead. While many small business- es are experts in their field, many find the ‘selling and marketing’ of their business an uncomfortable experience. Planning is key, as is know- ing what marketing tools to use, when and where. Knowing how to maximise your on and offline presence is important; implementing it effectively is paramount. The Athena West Berkshire Network welcomes expert speakers each month to its four meetings, each focussing on helping businesswomen to develop their businesses and their professional and person- al selves. In June, three of the meet- ings continue the theme of sales, marketing and develop- ment, with the fourth taking a wider ‘wellbeing’ slant and fo- cussing on dealing with grief and loss, something many will have faced during the last year or so. On June 10, emotional resil- ience coach Debi Richens will be tackling the delicate issue of grief at the Newbury West meeting and how we can best deal with it in our personal lives. THE Government laid out its plans to support adult education and skills to re- build from the impact of Covid in last week’s Queen’s Speech. As part of this commitment, colleges across Berkshire, in- cluding Newbury College, are offering free Level 3 courses across a range of essential subjects, supporting adults to expand their career options. Alongside this, organisa- tions such as Digital Gum are supporting adult learners to fast-track their digital careers – social media marketing, app design and coding through to VR and SEO – to land jobs in today’s digital economy. All training courses and skills development informa- tion is available to residents via BerkshireOpportunties. co.uk. Paul Newman, the non-ex- ecutive director of Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enter- prise Partnership represent- ing further education, offered this advice for job seekers

planning. Athena Network regional director Caroline Snowdon said: “Our members find the training sessions invaluable at the monthly meetings. “Even if you leave the meet- ing with one tip or fact that will help you be more success- ful in business, it has been worth it.” For more information, email caroline.snowdon@ theathenanetwork.com Meetings take place online from noon to 2pm. Visitors are welcome but places must be booked in advance. “From accounting and fi- nance, business management, digital skills, engineering to health and social care, many of these qualifications are available to study online or part-time. “Further study could help job seekers gain qualifications that are needed and valued by employers, improve job pros- pects and progress in secure and rewarding work. “I would urge anyone who is currently considering their next step to investigate wheth- er refreshing their skills could lead to a brighter future for them, in a secure and flourish- ing industry. “Berkshire Opportuni- ties (berkshireopportunties. co.uk) is a free online portal that provides information on the wealth of local skills and training opportunities. “With the support of local experts, employers and local education institutions, Berk- shire Opportunities is a one- stop shop for information, in- spiration and support.”

Louise Pengilley will be speaking at the Hungerford meeting on June 11 on how we all have a salesperson within us and how many can over- come a ‘fear of selling’ and use this skill to grow a business. The next Newbury Cen- tral meeting on June 16 will welcome guest speaker and marketing strategist Tanya Gaffon giving tips and advice on preparing a marketing strategy. This is followed on June 17 at the Newbury East meeting with Debbie Miles giving a brief introduction to business and those seeking more stable and secure employment: “The Government’s focus on adult learning is very welcome, highlighting the need to sup- port those who have seen their careers severely disrupted by coronavirus. “We know that workers in some sectors such as retail and hospitality have been dealt a terrible blow during the crisis. They are now seek- ing careers that offer security and fulfilment. “However, we also know that many feel like they lack the skills and experience needed to succeed in a new profession. Our message is that not only is your previous experience valuable, but that now is the perfect time to hone skills that will set you apart. “As part of the Govern- ment’s commitment to adult learning, colleges across Berk- shire are now offering free Level 3 courses (equivalent to an advanced technical certifi- cate or diploma, or A-levels) to those who are eligible.
