Man accused of o cer assault A MAN will face an allegation of assaulting a police officer during a drugs raid on a Tot- ton home. No evidence of substances was found when a warrant was executed at an address in Calmore Drive shortly be- fore 6am on Sunday, but one of the team was reportedly attacked. Robert Rayment (49), of Calmore Drive, was charged with assaulting an emergency service worker and criminal damage to a police vehicle. He was bailed to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on 2nd March 2021. NHS trust up for two awards A SUICIDE prevention campaign and an initiative to avoid unscheduled hospital admission for frail patients put a local NHS trust on the shortlist for two accolades. Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust’s Every Life Matters initiative is a finalist in the Health Service Journal Awards’ communi- cations initiative of the year category. Plea for New Forest firms to prepare amid pandemic distraction
ensure all EU-bound freight has paperwork in place for channel crossings. The scheme involving the A31 will see its eastbound carriage- way run as a contraflow to take both east and westbound traf- fic, while the westbound car- riageway will be used to check freight for border readiness. The speed limit will be reduced to 30mph. Neil Odin, forum chairman, said: “The projections shared with us clearly show that, if we do nothing, the changes to checks at the border would cause a traffic queue very quickly on the M275 and the surrounding area. “This would be bad news for many communities, businesses and road users across Hamp- shire. There will still be some impact but our plans are neces- sary and designed to reduce the risk as much as possible.” HCC is a forum member and Cllr Humby continued: “I ap- preciate the lower speed limit, which is needed to keep the A31 running safely as a single lane carriageway, will mean a few added minutes to people’s journeys, so please do bear this in mind before setting out.” vehicles, with areas adjacent to the building converted to private gardens for the ground- floor apartments. Proposals also include a secure bin and bike store. Couloir Homes stated in its application that the upper-floor windows had been “carefully de- signed to prevent overlooking” into the neighbouring proper- ties.

NEW Forest firms have been urged by local business leaders to get ready for Brexit. The New Forest Business Partnership is offering support with a “transition briefing” in early December to help firms adjust, said its chair, Matthew Lawson. He told the A&T: “New For- est businesses have been so preoccupied with surviving the Covid-19 pandemic that it may have passed them by that there are significant changes to the way they do business with Eu- rope from 1st January, which is only a month away.” The district voted to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum by 58% to 42%. Negotiations are still ongoing between the UK government and the EU, with the transition phase – which has kept regulations the same despite formally leaving – due to end on 1st January. Hampshire is ranked the most export-intensive county in the country and over a fifth of all south-east exports come from it, so the EU exit “will im- pact on all sorts of industries”, he warned. Cllr Humby added: “Hamp- shire has a thriving economy, and we want to do all we can to

Plans for 72-bed care home with cinema
A NEW strategy is being pro- duced to help protect Christ- church Bay and harbour from the elements for the next 100 years. It will assess how to manage coastal erosion and associat- ed risks, and take into account the effects of climate change, such as sea level rise and in- creased storms, from the east of Hengistbury Head to Chewton Bunny. BCP Council has already agreed to submit a business case to the Environment Agen- cy to apply for government flood defence funding of £450,000 to produce the strategy. It will be led by the council’s flood and coastal erosion risk management service, support- ed by specialist consultants and will ultimately lead to an adopted Environment Agen- cy-approved strategy. Using that, business cases for scheme delivery can be developed. The future plans will help lessen the risk of flooding or erosion to residents and busi- nesses in the Christchurch Bay and harbour areas. Cllr Mark Anderson, BCP PLANS have been unveiled for a 72-bed care home in Ring- wood featuring a cinema, bistro bar and hairdressing salon. The scheme submitted to New Forest District Council is for land off Hopclover Way, which is part of a larger site off Crow Lane with 195 new houses built by Linden Homes. Described as a “much-need- ed” facility, the new applica- tion by Frontier Estates also includes plans for landscaped gardens, 32 parking spaces and staff lounges and facilities. As well as creating a number of new jobs, it is claimed the development will help meet a significant need for new spe- cialist accommodation for older people. The planning statement said: “Not only does providing tai- lor-made accommodation ease the demand on care services, but it also frees up family-sized housing, allowing other resi- dents to move up the property ladder. “This type of development is known to be good neighbourly, with minimum visual or noise impact on surrounding prop- erties and with limited traffic movements and parking de- mand.” The care home will be located a minimum of 60 metres from the nearest neighbours, and gardens will be landscaped with activity zones, dementia-friend-
Council cabinet member for environment, cleansing and waste, said: “It will provide the foundation to enable us to make bids for government fund- ing to carry out similar works including harbour defences, to address flood risk as a result of sea level rise. “As our Christchurch front- ages do not yet have a strategy in place, there has been no his- toric investment from central government. Regular beach re- cycling exercises have primarily been funded from council bud- gets. “However, in the longer term we aim to ensure that any capi- tal coastal defence works will be assessed for funding via [flood defence grants] but will contin- ue to use council funds in the interim.” BCP Council has already ap- pointed contractors to under- take beach recycling on Mude- ford Sandbank and Avon Beach to Highcliffe in spring 2021, as well as repairs to rock groynes, fixing groyne beacon posts and providing additional rock ar- mour to protect the Steamer Point path. ly areas and relaxation spaces. The main building has been designed in relation to neigh- bouring properties in Castle- man Trail, Crow Arch Lane and Hightown industrial estate, the plans said. Documents show the 72 en suite bedrooms will be laid out in four living groups, with less frail residents on the ground floors to allow access to small private gardens, and those with more profound needs living up- stairs. The application stated: “Each group will have its own dayrooms for dining, sitting and activities. There will be bene- fits from some dayrooms being linked by moveable partitions. “There must be flexibility over time to allow the mix of residents to change as circum- stances vary. “It is important that move- ment through and around the home allows for independent access to each group without the disturbance to residents of passing through one unit to gain access to another.” Windows will be larger than normal with lower sills to al- low wheelchair and bedbound residents’ views of the gardens. External walls will feature red brick, red hung tiles, white ren- der and weatherboard cladding. The application will be con- sidered by NFDC before 25th January next year.
