concert: nova foresta classical players
A SOCIALLY distanced au- dience of just over 50 attend- ed a superb concert of string orchestra music given by the Nova Foresta Classical Players – held before the second lock- down and the first live concert in Beaulieu Abbey since the first. The Abbey Church, the Mu- sic at Beaulieu team and the orchestra are to be congratu- lated for making this possible, despite all the difficulties in- volved: As one audience mem- ber commented on leaving: “It was a real treat.” The programme opened with Handel’s delightful Harp Con- certo, in which the soloist was 16-year-old Rosie Gill. Rosie, a former Music at Beaulieu prize-winner, is already forging a promising professional career. Engagements have included performances for Royalty and on Classic FM. She is a pupil of Claire Jones, former Royal harpist, with whom she will be touring next year. Her playing was elegant and assured and was sensitively complemented by the 13-strong orchestra under the baton of their principal guest conductor Paul Ingram.
Nova, founded in 2017 by cel- list Philip Daish-Handy, is fast gaining wide recognition as a dynamic new musical force, and up until this year’s restrictions on live performance has fre- quently performed to packed venues across the south. One of its major aims is to provide a platform for young musicians of the future. Elgar’s wonderful three movement Serenade for Strings followed, with just the right amount of light and shade. Next came American Samu- el Barber’s sublime Adagio for Strings, arranged from the second movement of his Op 11 String Quartet in 1936, and made famous by its use on im- portant national occasions and in many television and film soundtracks. A lively finale was provid- ed by Gustav Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, completed in 1913 for the pupils of St Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, where Holst was music master for nearly 30 years. The fourth and final move- ment, The Dargason, which also features Greensleeves, pro- vided a suitably impressive cli- max to the whole evening. Martin Penrose
Waterspout on the Solent by Richard Eurich
book: the art of richard eurich
A BOOK has been published celebrating the career of a re- nowned artist from Dibden Purlieu, including some previ- ously unseen works. The late Richard Eurich OBE, who moved to the area in 1934, painted in his garden in a hut which heated by a paraffin stove. Although he passed away in 1992, his proud daughters Philippa Bambach and Car- oline Martin felt his works should be better remembered and recently approached art publisher Lund Humphries. The book is titled The Art of Richard Eurich, and tells the story of a shy man who decided to paint what he loved, rather than follow fashions. During World War 2 he was artist to the Admiralty and be- came known for his panoramic seascapes. After the war he completed commissions for Eton College, WELL known Sunday league foot- baller and Brockenhurst Park Run volunteer Das Stevens has record an album of instrumental music entitled Postcards of England. Das (56), who works as a HGV delivery driver for Tesco, was in- spired to start making music after recently retiring from running full marathons and playing Sunday League Football for New Milton Oranges. He said: “Back in 1985 when I was living in Stevenage, Hertford- shire, I recorded the weird solo album Flats of Earth between be- ing a member of two local punk bands. I then sold my keyboards and moved to live and work in the Netherlands.” Since returning to UK, Das has thrown himself into local sports as a member of New Milton Bowls club, a tail walking volunteer at the Brockenhurst Parkrun and secre-
Oxford and Cambridge univer- sities, the writer Evelyn Waugh and also Lord Montagu. He has over 100 works in public collec- tions. During the 1950s and 1960s when his work did not sell so well, he taught at Camberwell School of Art and later began to experiment with colour and his imagination. Philippa said: “In the 1970s his work started to be sought after again and critics rediscov- ered him. “However, as his style con- tinued to change, his fortunes likewise fluctuated and he still is not as well known as his con- temporaries such as Eric Ravil- ious or Graham Sutherland. “I am confident that people will be surprised and delighted by this opportune book which describes the man and his work in great depth and understand- ing and shows 160 wonderful paintings.”

FIFTY Footballing Muck- ups by Brockenhurst au- thor Kevin McCann has made it into Amazon’s list of best-selling books. Kevin (60), an ex-teach- er and former non-league player in Lancashire and the Midlands, details the bizarre side of the beautiful game in his debut book, which has attracted a string of five- star reviews. “The idea grew from my programme articles writ- ten for non-league Radcliffe Borough,” he said. “I soon realised no mat- ter who you support, from a non-league to a world class team, there is always the potential for a muck-up to occur.”
Fifty Footballing Muck- Ups features the infamous match in which every single player was shown a red card, and Kevin also recalls the defender who fell asleep in the middle lane of the M1, and the referee who couldn’t count to two. In his chatty and humour- ous style, Kevin recounts the time a manager lasted only ten minutes in post, and when a goalkeeper’s career was ended by a stray dog. “To quote John Cleese completely out of context from the film Clockwise,” he said. “‘It’s not the despair. I can take the despair. It’s the hope I can’t stand.’ “And there is always hope
that this time your players, your club, your internation- al team will not muck-up; but they probably will.” Kevin’s teaching career in second- ary schools, spe- cial education and colleges has taken him all over the country. After completing a mas- ter’s degree a few years ago in financial education, Kevin now delivers a range of courses, the most popular being Planning for Retire- ment. Originally from Blackpool, Kevin moved to the New Forest with his wife Janet, who was born in Brocken-
hurst, ten years ago. Fifty Football- ing Muck-ups, published by London-based Publ ishNation, has been de- scribed by capti- vated readers as a “really enjoyable read”, “well-writ-

ambient and at sometimes hyp- notic and relax- ing but diverse. It features 16 tracks showcasing differ- ent areas of Eng- land, all of which have an influence on me and my out-
ten” and “very funny”. One reader praised it as “a great little book crammed full of fun and footballing trivia - an indispensable re- source for football anoraks and wannabe pub racon- teurs alike.” Many readers hailed it as the perfect Fa- ther’s Day gift or Christmas stocking filler.
my ambition is to include various musicians from my past and pres- ent, including the local alternative band Continental Liaison from Lymington.” However, arranging collabora-
