2021 Land Rover Discovery: King of the hill once more?

■ By Matt Lawrence, Motoring Correspondent Updated seven-seat off-roader gets new mild-hybrid engines, latest entertainment tech and a subtle makeover.

Upscale R-Dynamic models include luxurious two-tone leather upholstery throughout the cavernous cabin, with extra marks for opulence being awarded to Land Rover’s new and improved info- tainment package. Debuting a completely redesigned centre console with a 11.4-inch full HD touchscreen that dwarfs its predecessor, the next generation Pivi Pro infotainment system features more intuitive menus, more dexterous navigation along with two separate LTE modems. These enable the Discovery’s occupants to simulta- neously stream and download tons of media to their heart’s content. Needless to say, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard issue, while customers can add wireless charg- ing with signal boosting technology to their wish list as part of the plethora of interior options. Driver-focused tech is centred around the 2021 Discovery’s enhanced 12.3-inch interactive dashboard. This high-resolu- tion instrument binnacle can be config- ured to display a pair of digital dials, full- screen 3D navigation or a mix of the two. Otherwise, an extra flash of the cash will get you Land Rover’s full-colour Head-Up Display. Developed in conjunction with sister brand and fellow purveyor of luxury cars Jaguar, the latest high-res HUD beams essential driving info onto the windscreen for minimum driver distraction. While you’re having fun with the toys up front, you can let the kids indulge in some entertainment on the go. Click-in tablet holders, built into the front seat- backs, come complete with USB charg- ing sockets and, via the family SUV’s on-board 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, up to eight mobile devices can be plumed into the web at any one time. Elsewhere, the updated Discovery makes loading and unloading a doddle thanks to the optional hands-free tail- gate. On top of that, the lower part of the SUV’s trademark split boot lid can be powered and also doubles up as a handy bench seat when flat. Load space tots up to a gargantuan 2,391 litres and even with the car’s seven seats all occupied there’s still room for 258 litres of luggage out back. Besides the aforementioned bells and whistles, Land Rover has ploughed a lot of work into its the second-generation smart key fob. This so-called ‘Activity Key’ now comes complete with its very own touchscreen plus a digital watch and – get this – will even lock and unlock the vehi- cle. The wonders of modern technology.

The innovation doesn’t stop in the cabin. Lifting up the Discovery’s clam- shell bonnet reveals one of four engines – three of which are new for 2021. Out go the old SD4 and SDV6 diesels, replaced by a pair of 3.0-litre, six-cylinder mild hybrids. Rated at 246bhp and 296bhp respectively, the more potent D300 packs quite a punch with 479lb-ft of torque on tap. On the petrol side of things sits the P360, a 355bhp, 3.0-litre straight-six unit. Also imbued with mild hybrid technology, which harvests and stores energy gener- ated under braking and deceleration, it’s accompanied by the only non-hybrid of the bunch, the Discovery’s entry-level 2.0-litre four pot, with 296bhp and a more modest 295 lb-ft of torque. Each one of the six-cylinder models comes equipped with the added bonus of automatic torque distribution, splitting power between the front and rear axles to suit driving conditions. This works hand in hand with Land Rover’s improved Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system for maximum traction and efficiency on and off the asphalt. Meanwhile, standard air suspension helps iron out bumps and potholes for premium levels of ride comfort as well as added efficiency when cruising on motor- ways. All but entry-level 2.0-litre petrol versions also get adaptive dampers as standard. One final option which truly does make the Land Drover Discovery one of the modern masters of the off-road realm is its second generation Terrain Response system. With this sophisticated software installed, die-hard green laning anoraks can tinker and fine tune almost every detail of their Discovery’s setup, from throttle mapping, gearbox shift points, steering and suspension settings to tackle pretty much every conceiva- ble obstacle that Mother Nature has to throw at them. Even more diverse pursuits, from water fording to trailer hauling, present few problems for the new Discovery, with Wade Mode included as part of the Terrain Response 2 package and towing capacity rated at a hefty 3,500kg. Available in Discovery S, SE and HSE trim levels as well as the flagship R-Dynamic version, the 2021 updated Land Rover Discovery will debut here in the UK early next year. £53,050 will get you the most basic 2.0-litre petrol model, making it a few thousand pounds cheaper than the equivalent BMW X5, Audi Q7 or Mercedes GLE. ■

Without breaking into the SUV strato- sphere, populated by Starship Enterprise- like luxury behemoths such as the BMW X7 and Range Rover, most mere mor- tals in search of seven seats, cavernous space and a host of premium goodies still have a good handful of credible options on the table. The gaggle in question includes Germany’s trio of sparring cruis- erweights, the Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE and BMW X5, as well as the serene Volvo XC90 and the rather leftfield Lexus RX in its seven-seat L configuration. However, quite possibly the most prestigious name of them all, simple in terms of historical kudos, may well be the venerable old Land Rover Discovery. It’s true that the last few years haven’t been kind on the Discovery. Once one of Land Rover’s marquee big sellers, the yacht-sized seven-seater SUV has been flagging in terms of numbers for a few years now. Hence the vital significance of this latest refresh, ready for release in time for the new year, as Land Rover look to claw back some ground of the afore- mentioned upstarts. The overhaul starts in earnest with a revitalised, if not totally revolutionary, exterior design. You’ll still recognise the 2021 model as a Discovery from a furlong off, of that there can be no doubt. Such tell-tail elements as the clamshell bonnet, the stepped roofline and the mammoth C-pillar remain, however some of the subtler details of this beast have been given a new lease of life. Up front, the 2021 Discovery’s signa- ture LED headlights now feature a new daytime running light signature set lower into the lamps. Talking of light shows, both front and rear indicators are now of the sweeping variety, while the car’s revised front bumper gets a wider body- coloured graphic and new side vents. The rear fascia makes much more liberal use of gloss black, with a chunky panel of the same colour incorporating a pair of updated LED light clusters and that iconic, if rather divisive, off-centred number plate. The finishing touch, on the outside at least, comes in the shape of several new alloy wheel designs, ranging from 19- to 22inches. On board, the 2021 Discovery’s steer- ing wheel also gets a refresh. Now with a snazzy four-spoke design, it features plenty of built-in buttons that remain subtly hidden until selected and lit up so as not to clutter the driver’s peripherals. Metal gearshift paddles sprout out from beneath the wheel while a smart new gear selector is also on hand for those who like to get more hands-on with their shifting. Like all of its key rivals, the facelifted Discovery prides itself on its consum- mate seven-seat prowess as much as its off-road proficiency. Space is plentiful, whatever way you chose to set up the multi-configurable three rows of seats.
