IN 1753 the Hare & Hounds at Speen had its very first Christmas. “With a jovial Inn keeper and beer swilling wenches” the current owners like to think it was a great month for their famous inn. Time passes by and the inn is approaching its 265th Christmas season, with this great tradition of innkeeping continuing. The Christmas 2018 menus are now available on the Eat page of its website or to pick up at the inn. With lunch from £18.50 and dinner from £23.50, bookings really are coming in quickly, book early. The Barn, a former winner of the West Berkshire Restaurant & Bar of the Year award, contin- ues to go from strength to strength, with ongoing support from its customers. In addition to the stunning oak- framed barn, there is also The Pantry and The Library for those smaller more intimate parties. THE Walters family have farmed at Bower Farm for more than 100 years. With nearly 50 years of expe- rience rearing turkeys for Christmas, the family are passionate about animal welfare producing the highest quality turkey. The turkeys are reared from day old poults in Aldworth, high on the Berkshire Downs. From August, the free range turkeys are outside exploring and foraging the downland meadows. All are dry plucked and hand finished on our farm and are then hung for up to two weeks in purpose-built refrigerated rooms. This ensures the turkeys are moist, tender and develop that full old-fashioned flavour
