Arabian action day

THOUSANDS turned out for the annual Dubai International Arabian Raceday, with plenty of prizes on offer. Under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Arabian racing took centre stage, while there were plenty of other activities throughout the afternoon. Prizes on offer included a brand new Citroën C1 Vti 68 Feel, a holiday in Dubai, iPads and mobile devices. There was also face-painting, henna tattoo and a mechanical horse. Each prize awarded throughout the day was dependent on what category was being judged by Abdulla Al Ansari. The best children ’s hat is always very popular as youngsters get the oppor- tunity to showcase their creative skills to win a prize. Theo Lockhart from Tilehurst was awarded an iPad after being judged to have the best boy’s hat. Meanwhile, Daisy Tapping from Newbury was given an iPad for having the best girl’ s hat. Rudi at the races KAREN Yates was crowned queen of dress at Newbury Racecourse when thousands of women dressed to impress for Ladies’ Day. Ms Yates was judged the ‘Most Stylish Racegoer’ among the competi- tion hopefuls. Dressed in yellow, Ms Yates spent a week making her own hat and was awarded with a year’s supply of Champagne by judge Kate Tracey. A 13,000-strong crowd dressed for the occasion, where they enjoyed a full day’s racing, with the feature Ladys- wood Stud Hungerford Stakes won by Sir Dancealot . Rudimental’s DJ Locksmith provided the entertainment, but was forced to cut his set short because of technical problems. MORE than 23,000 people flocked to Newbury Racecourse for the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival. Plenty of stars and celebrities attended the prestigious event, includ- ing comedian Michael McIntyre, former Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce and ex- model Jodie Kidd. Newbury Racecourse chief executive Julian Thick said: “ It is encour- aging to see solid crowds across the two days. “We hope our customers have been given a vastly improved experience across the site, with the majority of the redevelop- ment now complete.” Mr Thick was referring to the new winners’ enclosure at the race- course, as well as the opening of the Many Clouds Bar by Lambourn trainer Oliver Sherwood.
