Cox, said: “We had a good turnout this year. We had eight motorised vehicles, which is the most we have had for many years. “The numerous walking entries and the equestrian entries helped to make this the best parade for a long time. “All the entries were up to the usual excellent stan- dard and it was great to see so many new faces.”

LAMBOURN put on a fine show for its carnival – with attendees hailing it “the best in years”. A huge turnout, combined with first-class entries and a cloudless sky, sealed the deal. Families who live along the route partied in their gardens, like Stella Buck- land, who has lived in the village all of her 91 years. One of the organisers, Liz

EDINBURGH may have thrown its worst at them weatherwise, but Newbury Youth Theatre had a wonderful week at this year’s Festival Fringe with their family fun play The Wizard of Winterbourne , based on true stories. Directors Tony and Amy Trigwell-Jones said: “This has been a phenomenal Fringe for NYT. It’s a joy to have watched them grow into a tight-knit company and start to really play with the show. They have worked for audiences in this incredible competitive environment and have performed daily with absolute professionalism.”

The end of an era AS the academic year ended at Mary Hare School, so did the 12-year tenure of Arlington Arts’ popular director Tony Trigwell-Jones, who stepped back – or rather into the classroom downstairs – to concentrate on teaching at the Snelsmore school for the deaf. Tony’s passion for the arts has been the driving force behind the venue’s successful growth. “Over the last few years I’ve worked on diversifying the programme, trying to build audiences for Fringe-style theatre as, although live music is a huge passion of mine, contemporary theatre is certainly more my professional background. I do hope this continues to grow in the coming years,” he said .

He said: “We would like to say thank you to the people who defaced the central memorial. It looks like they’ve taken a stone or a coin to it. It’s sick.” The memorials, commemorating two fatal collisions over the former airbase, were dedicated by Princess Anne in 2012.

MEMORIALS to American servicemen who fought and died in the Second World War were vandalised, weeks after they were relocated. Newbury Royal British Legion (RBL) branch secretary Keith Williams said the scratches on the memorials had appeared over the bank holiday.
