Elstree Shcool Nusrery and Pre-Prep

ELSTREE Nursery and Pre-Prep in Woolhampton, Berkshire is set within the idyllic grounds of Elstree School’s 150 acres. Founded more than 25 years ago, the school provides a stimulating environment for children aged three to seven to be nurtured and inspired. With a recently refurbished and extended Early Years barn, garden, offices and entrance, Elstree Nursery and Pre-Prep has places for 65 girls and boys. Energetic, enthusiastic and qualified staff work hard to ensure that every child is valued and encouraged to explore and develop their talents. The aim is for children to leave Elstree Pre-Prep inspired and enthused. Their first encounters of learning should be full of excitement and joy, framing their approach to education for the years ahead. As this is often a child’s first experience of education, the transition from home to school is supported with home visits and taster days. This warm and homely approach is based upon the family principles of Elstree School. With access to extensive grounds and facilities, the Early Years children spend at least one day outdoors every week exploring the natural environment. This involves anything from sharing a hot chocolate and

daily opportunities to paint, draw, create and learn. Staff are highly skilled at providing great learning experiences and opportunities to progress the children’s development with creative and extensive resources. Role play areas support the children to play out scenarios of what they already know in order to enable them to make sense of the world around them, and a wide range of books are available in every room and age group to support children to develop a life long love of books and encourage early reading and literacy skills. There is a bubble room (sensory area) and studio for dance and drama sessions. Additional activities include French and music. The on-site chef prepares fresh meals each day as food is an essential part of the children’s care. Using an app, parents and carers can see photographs, videos and observations written by their

child’s keyworker on a weekly basis. Staff always listen to any requirements that you may have to help support the children. Staff at Tigers are passionate and enthusiastic about the care and education they give your children. Many of them are long serving members of the team, but Tigers also believes strongly in training the next generation of educated childcare professionals, which is why they have their own training centre on site. They work closely with regulator Ofsted and services such as Environmental Health and the Local Authorities Early Years Teams to ensure they are up to date with current regulatory requirements and changes in legislation. Tigers received praise for the way they have dealt with coronavirus and their ability to be flexible. Abacus DyaNusrery & Pre-Shcool

Complete Childcare group which it belongs to. The nursery is cleaned rigorously and PPE is used when necessary, and good personal hygiene adhered to. The drop off and collection of children is done at the door, which minimises the number of people coming into the building each day. Abacus’ sister nursery in Bracknell produced an informative video detailing some of the new changes and procedures, which you can see on the Abacus Facebook page. To recognise the hard work of its employees during the lockdown period, Complete Childcare presented Lockdown Hero awards to its staff who have worked continuously since lockdown began in March. At Abacus these were given to nursery manager Emily Davis and Anna Berridge. Choosing the right nursery is no easy task and can be a hard decision to make. The exceptional team at Abacus are really passionate about supporting children and their families. The nursery’s great reputation is built on parents’ opinion and online reviews. Get in touch today and discover what Abacus can do for your child! Abacus Day Nursery and Pre-School, Oxford Road, Newbury, RG14 1XB (01635) 550134 abacus@completechildcare. co.uk

ABACUS is a childcare gem in Newbury and has been the first choice for hundreds of families since opening in 1992. Parents love it for its home from home feel and great location close to the centre of Newbury – with plenty of parking in its own private car park there’s no need to rush and no busy road to cross outside. Babies and children under two enjoy exclusive use of The Nest, a suite of rooms with high- quality furnishings, natural wooden toys and games and cosy areas provide the youngest children a safe space in which they can settle quickly, grow and develop in safety. The Nest enjoys its own dedicated outdoor space so even the youngest children get time outdoors every day. At the age of two children progress to rooms on the ground floor where they have a wide choice of carefully selected toys and games. As their interests change, we develop resources to give them broader learning opportunities. The Pre-School rooms are vibrant and educational, where children are introduced to more formal numeracy and phonics activities while continuing to learn through play and discovery. There is unrestricted access to a covered outdoor learning area where children enjoy all the traditional outdoor activities in a safe and sheltered space as well as direct access to a large garden. its doors were kept open to keyworker families and vulnerable children, ensuring their parents and carers could continue their essential work helping to support communities and keep the country moving. Since restrictions were lifted in June Abacus was able to welcome other children back to the nursery. Everyone has settled in really well again and both staff and children have easily adapted to the changes the nursery has had to implement in response to the Covid-19 outbreak. St John’s Pre-Shcool Harnessing your child’s natural curiosity and building confidence

BASED at St John’s Church in central Newbury, St John’s Pre-School follows the Curiosity Approach philosophy, meaning they surround their children with resources that inspire curiosity, awe and wonder. They are a forward-thinking setting with a dedicated, graduate-led team who create beautiful environments for the incredible children. They inspire the children to be inquisitive and curious, creating the “thinkers and doers” of the future. Children are supported to be ‘school ready’ when they leave, gaining independence, confidence, developing a ‘can do’ attitude and recognising what they are ‘expert’ at. Children also develop the ability to enjoy their peers’ interests and capabilities. St John’s is proud to have achieved another ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted in their most recent inspection, with ‘Outstanding’ for Personal development, Behaviour and Welfare. They provide funded (subject to funding criteria) and paid for childcare from 15 to 30 hours per week for two- to five-year-olds during school term-time. Staff pride themselves on the wide range of experiences they give children in their care, from weekly accredited Woodland School sessions for all children from their third birthday to Hartbeeps music and sensory classes (both of which the

St John’s child-led approach and ethos results in children being able to follow their interests and explore the world around them. Pied Piper Prehsocol

The preschool operates in the hall to the rear of the Thatcham Methodist Church, along the A4. This provides an ideal and safe location for play and learning, with good indoor and outdoor spaces all year round. The setting allows children to free-flow between each space, encouraging their own independence as well as supporting their individual interests. The staff create exciting and engaging experiences for the children and their families. Each term, a trip is organised for the children such as a visit to a farm or Beale Park. As well as this, the children are encouraged to take to part in a nativity play, Easter celebration and sports day. All of which are thoroughly enjoyed by the children, their families and the team at Pied Piper. The Pied Piper team use an

online system called Tapestry for recording each child’s learning and development. This interactive learning journey has been greatly received by parents. It is set up when a child starts preschool and can be downloaded and kept when they leave. Pied Piper are pleased to offer a variety of flexible sessions; mornings, afternoons and full days are available for all children aged two-and-a-half to five years old. Pied Piper has just a few spaces available for the current academic year and already has a growing waiting list for September 2021. St Joseph ’s Catholic Primayr School

We follow the diamond rules at St Joseph’s and work hard on copying the example of Jesus, using good manners, caring for our friends and resources and following instructions carefully. The children love to receive stickers for following these rules. Despite current restrictions, practitioners continue to develop warm relationships with parents and carers, communicating with them daily via an online learning journal and email. The classroom environment has maintained its inviting feel, while practitioners take responsibility for ensuring regular hand washing and cleaning, among other precautions. One parent commented: “My son got attached to all the staff, which remarks a caring and child-friendly attitude. I can’t thank staff enough.” In addition to the Early Years curriculum, the children are encouraged to develop skills of resilience, team work, concentration and problem-solving, which sets them up for success throughout their school careers. Practitioners sensitively encourage children to be as independent as possible, in collaboration with parents, assisting with a smooth transition into Reception year.

AT St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School the nursery class children have been very busy settling in and getting to know one another. ‘My friends, these are my friends!’ says one new child enthusiastically. The current cohort is keen on playing in the nursery garden, climbing and developing their gross motor skills; consequently, most of our activities are taking place outdoors. Caring, passionate practitioners welcome and settle each child daily, according to their individual needs. The children have access to both classrooms and the large exclusive garden during free flow for long periods each day. A wide variety of resources and areas are available, reflecting all aspects of the Early Years Curriculum. These include a free choice art area, music area and role play zone and provide a variety of opportunities to develop vital pro-social, communication and physical skills. Our knowledgeable practitioners, including a class teacher, use a combination of the children’s interests and planned activities to teach the children new skills in interesting, relevant and practical contexts. Each child is extended according to their individual development and next steps.

AFTER what has been a very challenging period for everyone, The Rocking Horse Nursery is now almost back to full capacity, with the sound of lots of happy children running around. The nursery has been so grateful for the support it has been shown by parents and families along with the fantastic staff over the last six months. Throughout lockdown, the nursery remained open, looking after the children of key NHS staff and essential workers, which has allowed staff time to put in place essential Covid safety measures and the nursery is delighted to have been able to start the new academic year. Extensive Covid safety measures have been introduced across the site along with new operating procedures based on Department for Education advice. The nursery is constantly reviewing and updating its procedures based on guidance from as many scientific and official bodies as possible as well as reviewing lessons from abroad. Subject to further Government directives and guidance, the team are confident that the current procedures offer the best possible levels of protection for all the children under their care. The Rocking Horse Nursery, looks after little ones from babies until they start school and is based within the beautiful, expansive Newbury Racecourse estate. Established in 1992, the nursery moved into a specialist designed

building, which includes six age- related playrooms, landscaped gardens, a library, sensory room and a children-sized kitchen. Staff remain committed to ensuring all the children under their care continue to enjoy their daily routine, despite the ongoing restrictions. The children play outside in the gardens all year round which is a hugely important aspect of the day, with each playroom enjoying direct access to outside and age-relevant toys. There are mud kitchens, sandpits and shade in all areas. Staff pride themselves on a ‘green fingers’ approach and under usual circumstances the greenhouse would be filled with

fresh produce, which the children have grown and harvested and then prepared in the kitchen and eaten for lunch and tea. One of the great features of the nursery is the children’s kitchen. It has been specially designed with surfaces and equipment at the right size and height for the children. It makes the environment incredibly safe and interesting for the little ones. The greenhouse and outdoor space is just one valuable way they are developing open-ended and natural resources to encourage language development, creativity and problem solving.

The children have been enjoying the texture of logs and chopped wood. The bark is very tactile and makes great pictures and play experiences. July always brings with it elements of joy and sadness. The joy comes when reports are written highlighting the achievements and progress for the children leaving to go to school, the children feel the joy of the graduation or leavers party. Sadness mingles in as those children leave the nursery to go to big school. In autumn there are lots of new faces in the pre-school. Wearing the Rocking Horse red uniform is

a big and exciting step. It is one way the nursery starts to prepare the children for the next big step – school. Babies at the Rocking Horse Nursery are nurtured by the team of highly qualified staff, looking after their needs from breakfast through to tea, including the all-important morning and afternoon naps. Playtimes are fun and teach the little ones social skills and introduce them to their first best friends. Each of the playrooms is light and airy, some with high ceilings and lots of natural light, with increased cleaning and hygiene
