NATURAL BURIAL WOOD AT SHEEPDROVE
SHEEPDROVE’S Natural Burial Wood is situated at the heart of their organic farm within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The view from the burial ground is spectacular; sweeping hills, miles of byways, woodlands, wildflower meadows and hedges make up the scenery. Its elevated position showcases the most glorious sunrises and sunsets. It is a unique and inspiring spot, perfect for a woodland with such an important role. It complements Sheepdrove’s commitment to sustainability and their continual efforts to be environmentally responsible. The burial ground embraces the ethos of returning all that we are to the soil to be used again for the benefit of nature, while leaving no negative impact on the environment. Set in a four-acre triangular deciduous woodland, it’s filled with native species of trees such as beech, ash, cherry and sycamore. The woodland was planted more than 20 years ago to increase the amount of woodland planting on the farm and to create habitats for birds and wildlife, increasing the biodiversity at Sheepdrove. The change of use from woodland to a burial ground took more than two years to complete with archaeological surveys to complete. Both Roman and neolithic remains were found in 2016, which now means that it is
buried. Wool, cotton, wicker and cardboard are all acceptable. coffins or shrouds can be used. Sheepdrove are members of The Association of Natural Burial Grounds (ANBG), which has been established by The Natural Death Centre. This means they comply with the ANBG Code of Conduct aimed at ensuring the highest professional and environmental standards, which means they provide their customers with the assurance of best practice. A natural burial offers a sustainable alternative to other burial options currently available. It produces less waste, reduces carbon footprint and nourishes the local ecosystem. Family and friends can enjoy peaceful reflection in the native woodland and surrounding meadows, which become a lasting tribute to those buried. The natural burial ground is open all year with 24/7 access. The woodland offers sheltered tree-lined paths and is itself sheltered by mature hedgerows. Under the tree canopy there is an abundance of native wildflowers, providing habitats for a variety of wildlife. The use of biodegradable coffins and control over the use of chemicals going into the ground prevents harm to wildlife and soil quality. Only 100 per cent bio-degradable materials are allowed to be
