Moulsford Prep School

MOULSFORD Prep School is an independent day and boarding school for boys aged four to 13, set in idyllic grounds of 30 acres beside the Thames near Goring and Streatley. Moulsford offers boys superb opportunities for learning while having fun. A restructured curriculum was successfully introduced in September 2017, which moves away from the traditional Common Entrance preparation. The focus is not only to prepare boys for senior schools, but also to ensure they have the skills for life beyond. The new curriculum encourages boys to have a go, take a well- thought-out risk, and, on occasion, fail. Exploration and enquiry is strongly encouraged and Moulsford life aims to develop boys’ resilience. Through the school’s activities programme, they aim to offer opportunities to develop new skills and talents, while becom- ing a conscientious citizen. The programme gives boys the chance to try magic tricks, bike maintenance, bushcraft, photog- raphy, drama, sailing, genealogy, subuteo, chess and bridge, pantomime, parkour, night- running, golf, stand-up comedy, geocaching, and many more. The most popular activities are kayaking, climbing, archery, cooking and ceramics. This non-compulsory activities programme has a 75 per cent take up rate, and the talented staff are able to offer these

charities to understand the latest research. They also have an inde- pendent school counsellor who is available to meet boys weekly. One measure of Moulsford’s success is the broad range of scholarships and exhibitions awarded each year. For 2018 at 13+, four boys have gained awards to Abingdon School, two to Radley, one to St Edward’s Oxford, one to Bradfield, one to Stowe and one to Wellington, across a range of academic, sports, music and all rounder awards. In addition to these schools,

others to which Moulsford boys progress this year include Marlborough, Eton, Magdalen College School, Shiplake and Pangbourne. A network of minibus routes offers easy daily transport to Moulsford, please contact the school for details. Please do pay an informal visit and tour at the next open day, on Friday, May 17, from 10am-noon or 1pm- 3pm. For further details and to book a place please email admissions@moulsford.com

talent in these arenas. Music and drama remains popu- lar at Moulsford and roughly three quarters of the boys from Years 3 to 8 play an instrument, with 14 per cent learning two. Places in the choir are hotly contested, with a total of 58 boys in the senior choir and 80 in the Junior Choir. As well as two outstanding productions a year, the highlight of the musical calendar is the open-air summer concert, with the choirs, orchestra and various ensembles (wind, string, jazz) performing on a July evening on

the lawn beside the river, with parents bringing picnics. The core values of respect, compassion and independence are at the heart of all that the school does. Expectations are high in terms of manners and discipline, and the boys respond accordingly. There is a strong rapport between staff and boys, and a sense of mutual respect. Mental wellbeing for both staff and pupils is taken very seriously. The school is in regu- lar contact with mental health

activities in-house, and therefore most are free of charge. Moulsford’s reputation for sport, and particularly rugby, remains extremely strong. While sporting glory is always the goal, and often achieved, the primary aim at Moulsford is to achieve opportunity across the ability range, with all boys in teams A to F regularly playing competitive matches. Minor sports have also seen significant successes in golf, skiing, fencing and judo, with some of the less overtly sporty boys finding their niche and

The Oratory School

THE Oratory has announced that from September 2020, it will become a coeducational school, welcoming girls and boys from the age of 11 to 18. The Oratory is an HMC Catholic day and boarding school set in the beautiful Chiltern countryside. Headmaster Joe Smith said: “We are delighted to be making this announcement and excited to be able to offer families of girls and boys alike our unique Oratory education.” Teaching is second to none at The Oratory and the value added results at A-level place it in the top three per cent of schools nationally. They are proud of their broad and rich curriculum and strong exam results, however an Oratory education is about developing young people in a much deeper sense than exam results alone can demonstrate. “There is ‘something deeper’ in an Oratory education – hard to define but undeniable – by virtue of its unique ethos and history as the only school founded by arguably the greatest educational thinker of the Victorian age, Blessed John Henry Newman,” said Joe Smith. An Oratory education gives young people every opportunity to draw out and find their individual innate talents and qualities and instils in them a sense of joy and a genuine love of learning. At The Oratory everyone will find their place to shine. Strong pastoral care is at the heart of what they do. As a Catholic school which welcomes pupils of

Thorngrove School

THORNGROVE School is a thriving co-educational day preparatory school for children aged two-and-a-half to 13 years old. Founded in 1988, the school is situated in the village of Highclere, just four miles south of Newbury. It is set in 25 acres of Hampshire countryside and includes its own woodland. At Thorngrove, the children’s natural curiosity is encouraged, teaching in a practical way and allowing them to develop and nurture their sense of wonder and enthusiasm for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), both inside and outside of the classroom. A sound and thorough knowledge of the world of science is crucial in helping our children understand their life and responsibilities in the 21st century as well as the world’s future prosperity. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils begin to develop how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and to analyse causes. They are able to develop these skills further in the oversub- scribed weekly Science Club where they gain hands on experience of explosions, slime and ‘potions’ that they crave. ICT and computing is very excit- ing for students at Thorngrove. A new curriculum focused on project-based learning and real life ICT and computing applica- tion is proving to be engaging and enjoyable and pupil progress is taking huge leaps forward.

technology and engineering. Enabling pupils to enjoy and be curious about maths helps them to think analytically and have better reasoning ability. This is important for their future as it helps them to solve problems and look for solutions in a diverse environment. There are strong links with the science department and there is cross-curricular work completed. Maths and science days build links and show how the subjects strategies and interactive games such as Kahoot – pupils race one another to beat the clock. The use of maths games creates a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject, such as building and strengthening mental and tables ability using the DoodleMaths and TTRockstars programmes. Pupils also take part in maths competitions such as Quiz Club, the Dauntsey’s Dodecahedron and the school is a member of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, participating in their challenges. The school invites you to come and visit to find out how a Thorngrove education could benefit your child. The next Open Morning is Satur- day, May 18, from 10am to noon. To book a place or to arrange an appointment on a day that suits you, please contact the registrar, Bev O’Brien, by emailing bobrien@thorngroveschool.co.uk or phone the school office on (01635) 253172. are interdependent. The pupils are able to discover the different stages of the design process and the various tools (including bandsaws, pillar drills and circular saws), materi- als and techniques to turn their dreams and ideas into reality. programming and marketing their own computer games and using HTML code to create their own websites. There is some wonderful logical thinking, debugging and prob- lem solving happening across the computing curriculum. There is a strong focus on Digital Citizenship and staying safe online, which arguably is the most important learning for modern pupils. This year some of the older pupils ran workshops for the younger pupils teaching them the key E-safety guidelines. Together they produced leaflets and

three-dimensional proof of their ability. Tools are introduced carefully and every pupil has a chance to practise before embarking on the use of expensive materials for their main projects. Recent projects have included slotted toys, acrylic clocks and maze games. The maths department at Thorngrove endeavours to foster a love of mathematics and a strong desire to learn more about the subject. It is important for pupils to realise that mathematics is essential and critical to science,

In ICT some of the pupils recently created spreadsheets and graphs about world weather. They then used their data to write a weather report and read it out in front of a green screen, making it look like they were in a professional news studio. Other children are using digital cameras to capture pictures of things they consider beautiful around the school site, some of which they will Photoshop. They will use the images to create an impactful presentation about real and fake beauty. In computing, children are programming robots,

Pangbourne College A place where the individual matters

PANGBOURNE College offers wide-ranging academic and co-curricular opportunities to boys and girls aged 11 to 18, with an emphasis on outstanding pastoral care and character development. Pangbourne is a vibrant boarding and day school community, perfectly balancing strong service values with a dynamic, modern outlook and unpretentious attitude. The college is proud of its outstanding pastoral care – rated excellent in the most recent ISI report – which takes an integrated approach to caring for each pupil, understanding the challenges young people face in order to improve the support it provides. Headmaster Mr Thomas Garnier said: “Above all, we are a ‘people place’. We are commit- ted to the personal development of our pupils in the fullest sense. They are encouraged to work hard towards academic success with a robust and comprehensive curriculum. “Just as important to us is char- acter development: confidence and values, creative and physi- cal skills, and an appreciation of themselves and what they can contribute to the world.” The Flag Values of Kindness, Selflessness, Moral Courage, Initiative, Industry, Resilience and Integrity underpin every aspect of college life. These are rooted in a Christian ethos and go a long way to preparing pupils for life’s

At Dauntsey’s pupils are extremely fortunate to have access to a wide range of facilities. As well as our major sports of rugby, hockey, football, basketball, athletics and tennis for boys, cricket (for both girls and boys), and hockey, netball, athletics and tennis for girls, we run a thriving extra-curricular programme. This allows pupils to represent the school in sports such as swimming, rifle shooting, fencing and equestrian. We played almost 750 team matches last year, at all levels, across a range of sports. I have yet to find a pupil who can’t find something that gives them a buzz and for boarders there is full access to all our facilities after school and at weekends. One of our sixth Formers said to

me recently: ‘You learn a lot about yourself through team sports. It’s about working together towards a common goal, taking responsibility for the team as a whole instead of trying to be the star or blaming someone else when things go wrong.’ We are all living in an increas- ingly pressurised and connected world. It can be hard to switch off both physically and mentally. Sport and doing exercise can help us all manage the stress of daily life, it can burn off nerves and frustration and restore a sense of perspective and calm. “I BELIEVE passionately that sport really matters. Not just for high performing athletes, but for everyone. As well as developing physical skills and fitness, participation in sport – be it individually or in a team – builds confidence, resilience and mental toughness. Sport in school gives pupils an opportunity to learn leadership, self-discipline and teamwork and develop a real sense of achievement. These are all vital skills that are easily transferable into many other aspects of life beyond the classroom. But in order to engage people at all levels, sport needs to be fun, challenging and available to everyone – from the elite performers to enthusiastic all- rounders.

It is in easy reach of excellent transport connections, 10 minutes from Junction 12 of the M4 and served by London Paddington-Oxford mainline rail network. Daily school transport
