Final public view before restored church bells head back to the tower

Second arrest in connection with Tilehurst stabbing A 16-YEAR-OLD boy from Reading has been arrested following a double stabbing in Tilehurst in September. He was arrested on Sunday on suspi- cion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and assisting an offender. The arrest is in connection with an incident which took place at around 11.30pm on September 12 in Lucey Close, when two 16-year-old boys sustained knife wounds. The arrest is the second in connec- tion with the incident. A 14-year-old boy has already been charged with attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. He appeared at Reading Magistrates Court on September 17.

were set out on the floor of the church, so that they could be viewed by residents and friends of the village. The bells had never before been lowered together, so the event was regarded a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity for anyone interested in local history and culture. The arrival of the restored bells back in Hampstead Norreys gave the public a final chance to view them at the week- end and to attend a ‘bell-bless- ing’ ceremony. Workmen were expected to hang them back in the tower this week.

All but one of the bells were cast in the 17th and 18th centuries. Even the most ‘modern’ bell, installed in 1930, was cast from the metal of a piece dating back centuries. Their renovation was a major undertaking, costing around £75,000. A local committee raised funds towards the effort, principally through contribu- tions from the Heritage Fund, the Englefield Chari- table Trust and Greenham Trust. Before they were taken from Hampstead Norreys, the bells

MEMBERS of the public had a second opportunity to view the historic bells of St Mary’s Church, Hampstead Norreys, over the weekend before they are hung back in the bell tower. This followed works to restore them to their former glory. In June, the bells were removed from St Mary’s tower and transported to a foundry for essential repairs. The bells had been silent since 2018, following assessors’ advice that they should not longer be rung due to their age and condi- tion.

A FAMILY support charity is call- ing for donations ahead of an online auction next month to raise funds for its services. Home-Start West Berkshire, which places volunteers in family homes with a child under five, is using the Superstars online auction to show- case an array of items and experi- ences for people to buy. The auction will take place from November 19 to 22. Home-Start West Berkshire direc- tor Grace Green said the charity had been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic as it hasn’t been able to conduct its usual fundraising activi- ties. For example, last year the charity raised more than £10,000 by hosting its first charity ball – however Covid- 19 restrictions have made repeating the event this year impossible. Mrs Green said: “The ongoing social distancing restrictions have made it very difficult for us to raise funds for our services, as our fundraising activities usually centre around hosting social events, like our annual charity ball, throughout the year. “Ensuring we are able to continue providing our services is our priority

and so instead of raising money through a number of different events, we’re focusing our efforts on collect- ing donated items for a big online charity auction.” Home-Start West Berkshire recruits and trains volunteers from the district of West Berkshire to provide much-needed practical and emotional support to young families. Mrs Green said: “The pandemic has been particularly hard for fami- lies who were already experiencing disadvantage. “Families have had the additional pressures of financial hardship, isola- tion and home-schooling, making the support we offer at Home-Start West Berkshire even more important.” To donate auction items or to regis- ter to receive an auction catalogue, call (01635) 760310 or email office@ home-startwb.org.uk by November 4.

In the dock at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 7, was Christian Jake Collard. The 21-year-old, who lives at Hopwood Close, is accused of assault- ing Tristan Pearce, thereby causing him actual bodily harm, in Newbury on October 4 last year.

He was told the matter could proceed no further that day and the case was adjourned for a trial to be arranged. Mr Collard was meanwhile released on unconditional bail.
