care befriending service manager Caroline Nash, pictured above, based in Basingstoke, raised the money for The Pink Place through a fundraiser on her Facebook page for her 50th birthday, asking family, friends and colleagues to donate instead of giving presents. Mrs Nash was also guest speaker for the charity on Zoom, on October 19, discussing the vital role the befriending service plays at Hampshire Hospitals. At the end of the chat, The Pink Place staff and patients, held up ‘thank you’ notices for the donation. Mrs Nash said: “Working in palliative care and having experi- enced cancer myself, I know local charities that offer support are greatly needed.” The Pink Place aims to combat feelings of fear and anxiety and it continues to adapt its services to the changing needs of those the charity supports during the coron- avirus pandemic. Operations manager Kay Alsop said: “The Pink Place is particu- larly reliant on donations since the coronavirus pandemic to meet the growing demands on our services since the initial lock- down. Caroline’s generosity has helped enormously.” The Pink Place was set up in 2010 for women with breast cancer. In 2013, it opened up to all types of cancer and in 2016 The Blue Space was created for men affected by cancer.

A GOLD coin described as ‘the most important single Iron Age coin ever found in this country’ is going under the hammer – with an estimated price of £30,000. The coin – uncovered in a field near Newbury in November last year – depicts Caratacus, the first British freedom fighter and famed military commander who resisted the Roman conquest of Britain in the first century. The coin was struck at Calleva – modern day Silchester – shortly before the Roman Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in AD43 and is the first gold coin of Caratacus to be found. The coin is considered to be impor- tant because the inscription CVNO confirms that Caratacus was a son of Cunobelinus, the legendary Old King Cole and the Cymbeline of Shake- speare. Dr John Sills, author of Divided Kingdoms: the Iron Age gold coinage of southern England , said: “Just when you think you’ve seen everything, something completely unexpected turns up out of left field – the find of a lifetime. “The Caratacus stater is the most important single Iron Age coin ever found in this country, the only known gold coin of one of Britain’s greatest resistance leaders.” David R Sear, author of Roman Coins and their Values , added: ‘The gold stater of Caratacus is amazing and most certainly confirms the attri-

Hallowe’en safety guidance WITH the nights drawing in and Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night almost upon us, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s community safety patrol officers (CSPOs) are once again working with residents, shops and partner organisations to help keep the borough safe. Due to Government Covid-19 restrictions, trick or treating is not recommended while organised bonfire and firework displays won’t be held. Instead, residents are asked to consider alternative Hallowe’en activities such as pumpkin trails, scavenger hunts and arts and crafts, and to be conscious of neighbours, animals and wildlife if lighting fireworks at home. To help shopkeepers, CSPOs will be visiting stores to offer advice about the responsible sale of items such as flour, eggs and fireworks. They will also visit sites where bonfires have been held previously and will work with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service when necessary. CSPOs will be out on patrol giving advice on being responsible and respectful of others, but also advice on the Government Covid-19 guidelines around the rule of six, face coverings and social distancing. Cabinet member for communities, culture and partnerships Simon Bound said: “We know that the traditional autumn celebrations will be very different this year, but by sticking to the Government Covid guidance, we can keep Basingstoke and Deane safe, which will help us to get back to normal sooner. “Hallowe’en celebrations are not for everyone and can leave some people feeling anxious. Our message to our residents is to be responsible and respectful of others when celebrating this autumn. “As always, our CSPOs are out and about offering advice and providing reassurance as well as working in advance with shops, partners and residents to help everyone enjoy a safe and peaceful season.”

a chained captive before Claudius, expecting to be executed. Instead of being executed however he was pardoned, living out his days in Rome. A metal detectorist uncovered the coin last year in a field near Newbury, not far from where it was minted 2,000 years ago. The coin has been recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme of the British Museum and by the Celtic Coin Index at the Institute of Archae- ology in Oxford. The starting price for the coin is £24,000 and experts estimate it will sell for £30,000. It will go under the hammer at auction by coin dealer Chris Rudd on November 15. bution [to Caratacus] of the silver coins bearing the inscriptions CAR and CARA. “This must surely rank amongst the most exciting numismatic discov- eries of the 21st century, if not of all time.” Caratacus was born in AD10, a priv- ileged prince in Britain’s first famous royal family, and after the death of his elder brother in AD43 became the sole heir to the former kingdom of Cuno- belinus – the biggest, richest kingdom in Atlantic Europe. From AD43 until AD51 he was on the run, the most wanted man in the Roman Empire, defying and delaying the forces of Rome until he was betrayed in Yorkshire by Cartiman- dua, queen of the Brigantes. He is also remembered for the eloquent speech he gave as he stood as
