First online auction for Beaulieu Road
AN ANNUAL pony auction that has been held in the New Forest since the Second World War has gone online this year for the first time. The Beaulieu Road Pony Sales are key events in the lo- cal equestrian calendar, giving commoners and local breed- ers the chance to sell their New Forest youngstock to new homes. This year’s December sale was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions, but the team at
the New Forest Livestock So- ciety and Southern Counties Auctioneers pulled together and hosted the sale online. More than 30 ponies were put forward for the online auc- tion, which finished yesterday (Thursday). Buyers were able to arrange viewings private- ly with sellers, with healthy prices bid on the majority of lots. Sophie Grimes helped with the organisation and told the A&T: “The Beaulieu Road
sales of semi-feral and handled stock have taken place for over 60 years, and are an important event for New Forest Common- ers and local breeders. “With careful consideration and planning, the idea of the first Beaulieu Road online pony sales was brought to life. This did not come without its complications and strict regu- lations, which meant having to narrow down entry criteria. “However, New Forest Live- stock Society directors and
members worked hard to cre- ate terms and conditions that ensured a sale could go ahead this year.” She added: “The sale was a thriving success, with some fantastic ponies available and some promising prices made. Although this is a great new revolution for the sales, I am sure we are all still looking for- ward to the normality of be- ing gathered around the sales ring at the Beaulieu Road yard again.”
Running challenge to raise money for New Forest equine college
A FORMER student at a Bransgore-based equine college will take on a five-mile night race to raise money for the cen- tre. Diane May helps with the horses used for riding therapy sessions at the Fortune College – a specialist centre for young people with learning difficulties – and lives in the college’s Lan- franco House. During lockdown she discov-
ered a passion for running and started going out for exercise across the Forest with Lanfran- co deputy house manager Paola King. Now she is planning to take part in the Dark Moors race on 21st January, which is held over- night in the grounds of Moors Valley Country Park. Diane hopes to raise money to purchase exercise equipment for students at the college, so
they can stay fit even when not riding. She said: “This race will be very difficult for me as I have never tried running before lock- down and I can’t see very well in the dark. I am nervous and very excited, and I enjoy training for it.” Diane has raised £150 of her £200 target. Donate via www. justgiving.com/fundraising/di ane-may2

He was an absolute su- perstar to load and travel, and has settled in so well tak- ing everything in his stride.” She added: “He has a wonderful character and is very quick and eager to learn. Emily does almost everything with him and they clearly adore each other.”

the page wanting a colt and both Erika and Daniel reached out to me with their beautiful foals, who I brought home in October. “Both are going to be shown until they are three, when hope- fully they will both make per- fect all-rounders, competing in showing and working hunter classes.”
