FOCUS ON SECURITY

THINK it won’t happen to you? Think double locking the door is enough? That you’d rather spend the money for a security system for your home on a nice holiday?

I believed all the above which is why I now have a state-of-the- art burglar alarm installed at my house. Along with high intensity motion sensor security lights front and back of it. Last year I was burgled. A man came into my house at 3am while myself, a friend, my daughter and her pal were all asleep. None of us heard a thing. He took credit cards, which he later used to get money, and my car. Over £3,000 of damage was done to the vehicle but the real damage was to our mental health. My teenage daughter still refuses to stay home alone and often wakes me in the night afraid there is someone trying to break in. When a man came to install the security system after our burglary, I said to him: “I suppose you do this a lot, put in a burglar alarm after the event.” He agreed he did, both of us agreeing how stupid it was. The alarm system and lights cost me around £900 – but it is a top of the range alarm. The feeling of safety it has given us is priceless. In this National Home Security month more than ever people should be thinking of just how secure their homes are. A detective from Bournemouth burglary squad advised me that the first step in a home defence system should be an alarm. I thought this were now quite old fashioned, but he said that in their experience a visual alarm will deter a burglar who will move onto find a house without one. Next are security lights triggered by movement around the vulner- able points of your home, like the front and back doors, patio doors, passageway, garden gates. A good CCTV system is also advised– although the detective

said this was aimed more at find- ing the culprits after the crime then deterring them. Thieves are CCTV aware; they will wear hoodies and scarfs to hide their identity. But they can be identified from other things, like clothing. Doorbells which can send an alert to the mobile phone of a homeowner when they are away along with video are popular. A relatively cheap option they come with drawbacks, alone they are not sufficient to deter a burglar but they can be useful addition to a home security system. Nearly a year on from my bur- glary I wish I had thought about how secure my home was as soon as I moved into it. Like many I just thought it would never happen to me. That having good door locks was enough. That we would be able to hear anyone trying to break in. There are security firms who will offer a, sometimes free, check to see where the vulnerable points of your home are. They can advise you on what kind of security measures you can have installed. You do not have to go for the most expensive alarm system. There are moderately priced ones which do the job just as well as the more expensive one. Your house does not have to bristle with lights and CCTV either. An expert, or even you yourself, can work out which are the most likely points a burglar will try to gain entry. Locks can be relatively cheaply upgraded so that they are tough for a burglar to open. Window locks are a good investment. After you have made your home secure do not forget garages and garden sheds – all happy hunting grounds for thieves. 

Home Security is now as important as ever as we look to protect our homes, busi- nesses, schools, farms, Industrial Units and property in general to give us peace of mind knowing that our possessions are safe and secure. There are a multitude of ways that you can protect your homes from pad- locks and fences to CCTV. Many companies can now install CCTV systems which can be connected to your mobile device, ena- bling you to keep an eye on your property while you are away from home. There are also advanced alarm systems which can be viewed and controlled via a mobile phone app remotely. If you are interested in protecting your home or property but don’t know where to start then seek the help of professionals who can guide you through the steps, and install a bespoke system to suit your needs. Security is important to us all, but even more so at this time of year, when the days are shorter, and the nights are longer. It is very important that you do your research and use a reputable and experienced com- pany to install your security system so that you are fully protected.
