Sleek and frugal new Golf is light years ahead

 By Glynn Williams MBE, Motoring Correspondent VOLKSWAGEN is on the crest of a wave after taking the Manufacturer of the Year title with its new Golf rated Best Family Car on the way to Car of the Year crown in the latest big awards. plug-in hybrid electric powertrain producing 245PS. But for those receiving a Disability Living Allowance with mobility element, the 130PS petrol Life model – expected to be the top seller – is available on Motability for just £199 advance payment, including the Light and Sight pack and adaptive cruise control.

calculating the position of the car based on route and GPS data from the navigation system to lower its speed before reaching bends, roundabouts, junctions, speed limits and built-up areas. At the same time, ACC accesses the dynamic road sign display via the front camera and adjusts the speed as soon as a limit has been detected. Smart alloy wheels and auto- matic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sen- sors, electrically heated and adjust- able door mirrors with memory feature and puddle lights, lights in the door handle recesses, and keyless start are among the other features included in the price. The Golf Life also features Volkswagen’s sophisticated Innovision Cockpit, which incor- porates Digital Cockpit Pro with 10-inch screen into the car’s instrument binnacle, as well as a large and clear 10-inch Discover Navigation touch-screen infotain- ment system that also displays the view from the £300 option revers- ing camera. Another of the options fitted was the Discover Navigation Pro touch-screen navigation and info- tainment system which includes streaming and internet with inte- grated voice activation, gesture control. This £1,600 option also includes We Connect Plus, a voice-activated control system for the pre-loaded pan-European navigation that updates with traffic information as well as telephone use. Most expensive of the ‘extras’ was the £1,750 ‘IQ Light’ LEDmatrix headlights that include dynamic curve lighting that uses the car’s front camera and the navigation system GPS data to adjust for city, motorway and poor weather. At £550 the winter pack to be appreciated in the months ahead includes heated steering wheel, headlight washers, heated washer jets while another boon is the head-up display so that you keep your eyes on the road. And completing the styling was a £1,000 panoramic sunroof and privacy tint for the rear windows at £245. I have owned a couple of Golfs over the years, both diesels, but this one is not just evolution but light years ahead, a dream drive. 

The Golf and up! GTI led the charge with category wins at The Sunday Times Motor Awards, with the technolo- gy-packed Golf’s class win and the fun-filled up! GTI taking the Value Car of the Year title. The Golf shared the overall Car of the Year crown with its VW Group stablemate the Porsche Taycan. This latest Golf is packed with technology, sleek looks, a nimble ride that is super quiet, and – in the case of the test car – propelled by a really frugal yet high performing petrol engine that averages over 50 miles per gallon. It really is premium quality and sophistication. Sportier, more dynamic, more intuitive and more responsive than ever before. Packed with pioneering technol- ogy, it features Volkswagen’s most advanced connectivity and driver assistance systems, and an all-new digital dashboard, representing the biggest technical leap forward in the 45-year UK history of the model. This eighth-generation Golf has been praised by experts since launch earlier this year for its blend of quality, innovation, driv- ing experience and appeal as a benchmark across the automotive industry. It looks neat, with sleek and sporty front bumper below a slim- mer grille and narrower headlights but most importantly it is a car that will take care of its occupants. All the hatchbacks are five-door with the models Life, Style, R-Line, and GTI with a choice of four turbo petrol engines – 1-litre 110PS, 1.5- litre 130 150 and just for the GTI a 2-litre 245PS – and two 2-litre diesels of 115 and 150PS. These are mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG auto- matic transmission. With the compact, three-cyl- inder 1-litre engine, the Golf can sprint to 62mph from standstill in 10.2sec, with a top speed of 126mph where permitted while officially returning 49.6-53.3 mpg on the combined WLTP cycle. Prices range from £23,300 for this 1-litre Life manual through to £33,460 for the GTI manual with a £1,500 premium for the DSG auto, while topping the range is the £35,960 GTE, which has a 1.4- litre turbo petrol engine (TSI) and

Such customers will really appre- ciate the wide-opening doors and roomy interior front and back, with the flexibility of offset-split rear seatback with ski hatch. The quietness of the drive is enhanced by multiple door seals to prevent wind noise. The model tested was the 150PS petrol Life finished in the head-turning lime yellow metal- lic paint – a £625 option – with manual gearchange that has a list price of £23,635. In standard trim it is packed with technology but this car had a suite of options that took it to £31,295. More of that later! Under the bonnet is the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that is silky smooth and amazingly responsive with 0-62mph sprint in just 8.5sec and 139mph potential top speed – who needs a GTI, I thought! And in all kinds of driving con- ditions the frugal nature of the machine was reflected by econ- omy averaging 53mpg. Who needs a diesel, I thought. Considering the Life is the ‘entry’ model, the package of standard equipment is breathtaking. That is one of the results of the new WLTP or worldwide harmonised light vehicle test procedure for econ- omy figures which requires test figures with any optional equip- ment so they make a lot standard. This Golf was the first volume model in Europe to launch with innovative Car2X technology – a system with the potential to rev- olutionise road safety, providing advance warnings of dangers ahead, facilitated by its ability to pass details on to other Car2X- equipped cars. This way, notice can be passed back through traffic to warn of an approaching hazard, emergency vehicle, or another unexpected scenario on the road. Other standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, a driver alert system, dynamic road sign display, lane assist to keep you in your lane – now recognis- ing grass verges as well as painted lines – and also front assist, with extended pedestrian protection measures, to deter shunts. In fact the package allows for level two autonomous driving, pro- viding you keep one hand on the wheel. Adaptive cruise control in the new Golf is now predictive, system

Offering you a sporty elegant appearance. Agility and aerodynamics – the Golf GTE has not just internalised these values, it also wears them on its sleeve.

These figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. The Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid vehicle requiring mains electricity for charging. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption, CO2 and electric range figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which may depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen model range, including hybrid, all-electric and petrol/diesel vehicles. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Volkswagen Golf GTE: 141,7 mpg3 and CO2 emissions: 45 g/km3 | Electric | Consumption: 135,49 Wh/km3
