 By Glynn Williams MBE, Motoring Correspondent SKODA has announced final specifications and pricing for the fourth-gen- eration Octavia vRS, the brand’s sporting flagship model that opens for orders at the end of the month. feature new front and rear bumper designs that incorporate a host of black details. These include the double-slat radiator grille, lower air diffuser and the distinctive air curtains above the front fog lights. The door mirror housings and window frames are also finished in gloss black, while the estate model is finished with black roof bars as standard.

showcased the latest technologies and the fourth-generation model is no exception with acclaimed Virtual Cockpit instrument panel as standard with an additional Sport layout which complements the Columbus infotainment system featuring a large 10-inch touchscreen display. As drivers have come to expect, the new Octavia vRS delivers a thoroughly engaging and direct driving experience thanks to its 15mm lower ride height and pro- gressive dynamic steering system. An electronic VAQ limited-slip differential is fitted as standard and provides more traction for the front-wheel drive through corners, while the braking system features big 17-inch front discs as standard behind the 19-inch Altair anthra- cite alloy wheels. Ordering for the new Octavia vRS opens on Tuesday 27th October with the first deliveries expected before the end of the year. The Octavia vRS launches with a 245PS 2.0 TSI turbo petrol engine and seven-speed automatic trans- mission (DSG) priced from £31,495 on the road for the sleek hatch- back, with £1,200 more for the practical estate. With 370Nm of torque available from 1,600-4,300rpm, the Octavia vRS delivers seamless power throughout the rev range and can sprint from 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds. The launch model is the first of a range of Octavia vRS models set to arrive over the coming months which will include a manual ver- sion of the launch 2.0 TSI 245PS model, a 200PS 2.0 TDI turbo diesel DSG with the option of four-wheel drive and the brand’s first electri- fied vRS model – a 245PS Octavia vRS iV DSG. The fourth-generation Octavia vRS introduces a new look that is both sporty yet subtle. Although instantly recognisable, the new Octavia is sharper and more intri- cately detailed than its best-selling predecessor. Both hatch and estate models

At the rear, the hatch model adds gloss black aero flaps, dif- fuser and a subtle bootlid spoiler, while both models come with chrome exhaust tailpipes and vRS badging as standard. Inside, the new vRS combines sportiness with comfort and a gen- erous quota of technology. The new multifunction three- spoke leather-rimmed steer- ing wheel is equipped with DSG gearchange paddles and new knurled wheels in a chrome design. The heated front sports seats with integrated headrests are upholstered in black fabric while a black headlining further enhances the sophisticated inte- rior ambience. The new seats, along with the steering wheel, armrests and Alcantara-padded instrument panel, all bear the vRS logo and distinctive red stitching. Carbon optic decorative strips, LED ambient lighting and alumin- ium pedals complete the interior design package. Skoda’s vRS models have always

There are five species of deer in the Forest, the most common being fallow, roe, sika and red deer, but there are also small num- bers of muntjac deer. Gem chief executive Neil Worth says: “We encourage drivers to be extra observant, but we recom- mend that you ‘don’t veer for a deer’, purely because of the risks that go with a sudden change of direction while driving. “Periods of highest deer activity tend to occur at dawn and dusk, coinciding with the morning and evening rush hour, increasing col- lision risks in areas where deer are common.” Experts believe the UK deer population numbers more than two million, and research from the RSPCA shows around 75,000 deer are involved in vehicle colli- sions each year, with 10,000 killed instantly. The human death toll from deer collisions ranges from between 10 and 20 annually, whilst industry estimates put the cost of damage

Be particularly alert at dawn and dusk when deer are most active and if you spot one it is likely that others will be following. Also be ready to react if a deer leaps out right in front of you. You may spot deer or other wildlife approaching the road and be able to take pre- cautions. 
