FINAL preparations are well under way for launching the third gen- eration Nissan Qashqai - the British-built compact crossover that changed the face of the European car market. Prototypes of the all-new model are racking up testing kilometres across Europe for it to go on sale next year. The all-new Qashqai will build on its position as the benchmark in the medium-crossover segment in Europe since 2007. Underpinning the new model is a new chassis showcasing advanced engineering, innovation and technology. The British-built current Qash- qai, which went on-sale in Europe in 2014, has sold over one million units since introduction. Like its predecessors, the styl- ing of the new Qashqai was led by the team at Nissan Design Europe, based in London, while its engi- neering was led by Nissan Tech- nical Centre Europe in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. Nissan chief Gianluca de Ficchy said: “The new Qashqai is going to change what customers can expect
from a family car. Comfort, refine- ment and technology will be from higher categories of car, while the driving experience will satisfy driv- ers and passengers alike. “With Nissan’s bold e-Power technology, we feel that customers will fall in love with the feeling of an electric powertrain without the range concerns.” The new Qashqai will offer cus- tomers two powertrain solutions – a flexible and efficient 1.3-litre petrol engine with two power out- put choices and mild hybrid tech- nology, and the innovative e-Pow- er electric motor driven system for the exciting instant and linear acceleration electric vehicle (EV) feeling without range concerns. With the ePower drive system, the wheels are completely driv- en by the electric motor using a high-output battery and power- train which is integrated with a petrol engine, power generator and inverter. In conventional hybrid systems, the wheels are driven by an electric motor as well as a petrol engine but in the e-Power system the pet- rol engine is not connected to the wheels; it simply charges the bat- tery but can also provide electricity directly to the motor for additional
power. For this new model, Nissan has retained the principles that have driven the concept, design and development of the two previous generations - elegant design, en- hanced packaging and efficient powertrain, combined with elevat- ed quality and a driving experience from a higher segment. Central to the engineering con- cept was to retain the current Qashqai’s proportions, a key in its success as it comfortably navigates urban roads and fits comfortably in parking spaces, while also giving excellent interior space. It uses more lightweight materi- al to increase strength but to also reduce weight. The front and rear doors, front wings and bonnet are all now made of aluminium, while for the first time the rear hatch- back door is now made of a com- posite material. The use of ultra high strength steel has increased by 50% for the highest strength in for crash protection but without significant weight penalty. The result is that the overall body is lighter by 60kg and 41% stiffer than the out-going model.
This translates to refinement, ride comfort and driving response from a higher segment, plus ex- ceptional security in the event of an accident. The power-steering set-up has been upgraded for im- proved response. Under the bonnet the 1.3-litre petrol engine has been extensively updated to include a mild hybrid system with a separate lithium battery installation and a belt-driv- en generator to harvest braking energy. The new Qashqai also has more driver assistance with the next generation of ProPilot, bringing support in a wider array of circum- stances. It can accelerate and brake the vehicle within a single-lane on a highway, cruise at a set speed, and brake the vehicle to a stop in heavy stop-start traffic, resuming auto- matically if the vehicle has been stationary for less than three sec- onds and the traffic in front of the car moves away. The steering system and the camera are constantly updating the vehicle’s position, helping the car to stay centred within the lane while maintaining a pre-deter- mined speed but with the capa- bility to adapt and maintain a safe distance to the car in front. It can now adapt the speed ac- cording to additional circumstanc- es such as a lower speed limit, as it can read road signs and take into account navigation system speed limit data to slow the car without driver intervention, and use data from the navigation system to adjust the speed for bends or slip roads that have a tighter radius. Other upgrades include a “flank protection” warning for urban sit- uations, alerting the driver to the risk of side contact with an object, typically when turning into a su- permarket parking space. And it can also intervene to pre- vent a collision when reversing from the space thanks to an up- graded moving object detection
alert, braking if a moving obstacle is detected. The current Qashqai has been equipped with LED lights on upper grades since its launch in 2014. The new model has an advanced head- light system that adapts the shape of the beam according to road conditions and other road-users to project a brighter beam further and wider, but change to prevent dazzling oncoming drivers.

An extensive facelift took place in 2010 which upgraded the exte- rior. The second generation model in 2014 brought a more striking design and more efficient engines, more refinement and more con- venient technology and became the fastest UK-produced vehicle to reach the landmark of 500,000 units produced. To date, over 3m units of Qashqai have been sold in Europe – and over 5m globally. ■
