Sir Ben Ainslie leading Britain’s charge for first America’s Cup

SIR Ben Ainslie’s Ineos Team UK is leading the 2021 Prada Challenger Selection Series after securing four wins from four races as competitors fight to challenge for the America’s Cup in Auckland, New Zea- land. Having been humiliated in a pre-Christmas warm-up regat- ta, Sir Ben – who became the first-ever freeman of Lyming- ton and Pennington after his London 2012 Olympics hero- ics – shocked the sailing world with a dominant start to the qualifying race. Britannia struggled in last month’s World Series, suffer- ing frommechanical issues be- fore retiring from the second race. The series ended with the British boat losing all six of its races. However, the British team is now one race win away from a a place in the Prada Cup final after winning its first four rac- es before its American rivals pulled out of the remainder of the opening round robin. The decision came after a dramatic incident which saw New York Yacht Club’s Amer- ican Magic race boat Patriot fly into the air, before crashing into the water and capsizing. Eleven-time world champi- on Sir Ben, who is an honorary life member of the Royal Lym- ington Yacht Club, said about the capsizing: “I don’t know much about what happened.

Rossa, can decide whether or not to race again on Sunday. A bizzare quirk of American Magic’s withdrawal is the implementation of ghost races. Luna Rossa and Ineos will have to cross the start line in what would have been their races against American Magic in order to gain the point. Prada Cup organisers explained: “In order to comply with the formality of the regulations, after finishing the afore mentioned races, both competitors will have to start a ghost race vs New York Yacht Club American Magic to allow the regatta director to award the point to the relevant team. “The ghost race will then be suspended a few minutes after the start.” The Americans hope to com- plete repairs in time for the Prada Cup repêchage round, starting on 29th January. This will see the second and third-placed boats face off for a spot in the final. Sir Ben is the most success- ful sailor in Olympic history after winning medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards. This includes four gold medals at Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London between 2000 and 2012. In 2013 he lifted the Amer- ica’s Cup with Oracle Team USA when the US team de- feated Team New Zealand in San Francisco.

I’ve seen a video of the ma- noeuvre, and it’s just horrific. “You don’t want to see that happen to anyone, but I think everyone is okay, which is the primary concern. Sir Ben is joined onboard Britannia by Richard Mason, who grew up in Lymington and now lives in Southbourne. Richard learned to sail at Salt- erns Sailing Club and has been involved with the preparations over the last year. The boat was built in Hythe by Carrington Boats, owned by Lymington resident Jason Carrington. The decision to pull out means that Ineos Team UK and Luna Rossa will battle it out for the top spot in the Pra- da Cup final, with the Ineos boat 4-2 ahead. The two will race each other twice more – tomorrow (Satur- day)and Sunday 24th – with a win for Ineos in either sealing automatic qualification for the Prada Cup final. If the Italians win both re- maining heats to level the scores at 4-4, they will pro- gress to the final as the winner of the last race. The Prada Cup winner will then proceed to the America’s Cup contest on 6th March to face holders Team New Zea- land. With Ineos needing only one more win, should they win on Saturday they, along with Luna

SPIRITS were high as 35 Bramshott Hill Golf Club seniors took to the Dibden Golf Club course just before lockdown closed golf courses. The match was their first competitive match for over a month. It was evident that wardrobes had changed since the last competitive action with thermal gear, hats and gloves all

being worn with temperatures dropping significantly. With heavy rain falling over the weekend, the decision was made to shorten the match to a nine-hole Stableford game. Division One: 1, Brian Denham, 19 points; 2, Johnny Hooper, 19 points (second after count- back); 3, Kevin Rothwell, 18 points. Division Two: 1, Eddie Ford, 20 points; 2, John Gordon, 18 points; 3, John Bailey, 17 points.

LYMINGTON & District Sea Fishing Club held the Vernon Everitt Match Boat League’s final match with Paul Hollyoake claiming the overall title. Hollyoake took first place, narrowly beating Richard Day into second place by 8%. He achieved the win thanks to his consistency over the five matches, catching 24 species and 239 fish. This year also saw a new sub-competition held within the league match for the most species caught. The prize went to Chris Rogers, otherwise known as Super Rod, who caught 25 species for 163 fish. Martin Bobbett came a close second with Paul Hollyoake taking third. A total of 2,259 fish, with 40 different species were caught throughout the series. During the competition, five matches were fished at three different locations: Lymington, Poole and a new venue at Weymouth. Competitors’ four

highest scoring matches count towards the final tally. The club would like to thank Robin Lane for his efforts securing extra boats to ensure the competition could go ahead while competitors were required to socially distance, Alison and Richard Day for completing their unenviable task of processing the results, and Chris Ellis and Paul Wilson who ensured competitors had bait packs. Most importantly, the club extends its gratitude to Tom Bagnall of Christchurch Angling Centre. Without sponsorship, the series would be unable to take place. Results: 1, Paul Hollyoake, 1562 points (385.02%); 2, Richard Day, 1340 (377.31); 3, Chris Rogers, 1379 (354.74); 4, Ben Daniels, 1254 (345.84); 5, Martin Bobbett, 1194 (325.50); 6, Chris Ellis, 1217, (304.29); 7, Arran Harmer, 1061, (30.00); 8, Ed Taylor, 931 (300.00); 9, Robin Lane, 997 (283.18); 10, Rodney Giles, 963 (253.11).

Walhampton senior golfer’s charity donation

WALHAMPTON Golf Club’s Senior Section provided a welcome bright note in the doom and gloom by donating £1,200 to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Last year’s captain, Jerry Evans, has now handed over to Mac Macdonald, whose chosen charity for 2021 will go towards the fight against motor neurone disease.

Overall winner Pa ul Hollyoake
