DIGGER WORK
We may believe that the best deals can only be found online but this may not be the full picture. Through TV, radio and online ad- verts we are constantly shown great deals that seem too good to be true, and often this is sadly the case. However, you might be sur- prised to see just how competitive the prices are in your local shops and businesses. For example, TV adverts for nationally known companies often claim to have the best deals around, but if you do your home- work you may discover independent com- panies actually provide the same types of deals, if not better. One local example is of a New Forest mushroom grower which was able to sell its produce at a cheaper rate than the local supermarket – and still make a reasonable return. The fantastic thing about independent businesses is that they are run by people, not by boards, stockholders or algorithms. As they are run by local people you will usu- ally find that the business/shops building is in keeping with aesthetic of the area, adding character to the community and a touch of warm, welcoming personality.
There are scores of local shops and pro- ducers in the New Forest, Hants and Dorset, which have won accolades in customer re- views not only for their products but also for competitive pricing. Shopping locally, rather than at a large chain, is actually better for the economy. Research shows that £10 spent with a local independent shop means up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy. This is because the nearby shop and other business owners, who you are spending your money with, will often then put that money back into the local community by buying at other local shops, pubs and restaurants and other places circulating the money and giving a boost to the community. There are many local shops and busi- nesses in New Milton, Lymington, Lynd- hurst, Brockenhust, Christchurch Ringwood, Bournemouth, and elsewhere who have been given top ratings by trip advisor and other ratings websites. New Forest Marque. This has 150 member businesses and pro- motes local food, drink, and craft produc- ers as well local retailers of these products. The New Forest Marque is awarded to pro- duce which has been grown, reared, caught, brewed, produced or processed within the New Forest.
For many businesses it opens up whole new network of local suppliers and contacts.
As one producer commented: “It has made such a di erence to us in terms of operationally running our business as well as growing our business with new clients. The variety, range and quality of producers that the Marque supports has been eye-opening. “
Choosing to shop locally instead of the larger chain stores has many benefits, some of which may come as a surprise you.

Small, local businesses are surprisingly among the largest employer of jobs both locally and nationally and provide the most local jobs to communities. Not only this, but local employers are more likely to pay a high- er average wage than their commercial chain counterparts. Helping to grow the number of jobs in the area makes for a better place to live and work which then creates a healthy economy for the community.

Although many chain businesses do have good customer ser- vice, you can’t beat the personal touch of a local owner who usually knows most people in the neighbourhood. They can offer you a product that is suitable for you, your home and even your area. Building relationships between the local own- er and the local customer goes further than just a purchase. Local shops often keep stocks based on their own custom- er’s choices rather than national fashion trends and keeps in touch with local trends.
In a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by chain stores, which have been designed to look the same, independ- ent businesses bring much-needed originality and variety into communities. They can be a real breath of fresh air into an area populated by generic stores and companies.

Healthier environment Choosing a local company over a chain can actually have a positive impact on the environment. This is because the ma- jority of local companies are found on the high street and are within walking distance, rather than a drive away to the near- est large shopping centre. If more people chose to pop to the local high street rather than driving to the super-stores, this would considerably reduce air pollution, reduce traffic and im- prove the quality of the high streets. Even with shops current- ly closed to foot traffic, click and collect and delivery services are a lifeline to those who cannot get out, as well as providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.
