is coated in gloss black with satin grey inserts surrounding an embossed SVR logo. Some were a little under- whelmed by the cabin of the out- going F-Pace SVR which, consider- ing the calibre of completion from BMW’s X3 M, Mercedes-AMG’s GLC 63 and Audi’s SQ5, is entirely understandable. Indeed, in this area, the German trio of sizzling SUVs have consistently stolen a march on the opposition. That said, the 2021 Jag F-Pace SVR is looking better than ever on the inside. Alcantara leather adorns the door inserts and seats, the head- rests of which feature a tastefully embossed SVR logo that’s just unobtrusive enough to retain a good deal of performance chic. Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations branding is more vis- ible on the new split-rim steering wheel while another new addi- tion, a metallic rotary dial, lets you fiddle around with the car’s drive control settings. The centre console can be equipped with an optional wire- less device charger and phone signal booster but it’s without doubt the centrally-mounted 11.4- inch curved-glass HD touchscreen that steals the show here. Larger, brighter and looking to take the fight to Mercedes’s stellar infotain- ment suite from the rival AMG GLC 63, Jaguar’s latest Pivi Pro dual-sim system should be a credible alter- native at the very least. Now with a simplified, more intuitive menu, it includes the usual Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Moving back across the cabin reveals the 2021 SVR’s 12.3-inch HD driver display with enhanced SV-specific graphics and a custo- misable layout. Here, as well as on the optional head-up display, driv- ers can keep a close eye on perfor- mance by monitoring everything from lap times, G-forces and accel- eration via a digital stopwatch, G-Meter and acceleration graph. That performance is generated by the latest incarnation of Jaguar SVR’s golden boy; the 542bhp, 5.0-litre supercharged V8. For the updated version, the techies have managed to conjure up an extra 15lb-ft of torque from this beast of a powertrain, hiking the F-Pace SVR’s total output up to a menac- ing 516lb-ft.
Those stats alone should tell you that the new pinnacle F-Pace is endowed with enough brute force to give the frighteningly swift Merc-AMG GLC 63 S a run for its money. Intrigued? Well, without the luxury of having access to these two performance heavyweights, as well as some kind of abandoned airfield or salt flat, you’ll have to take our word for it. The F-Pace will race from 0-62mph in four seconds flat, thus gaining three- tenths on its predecessor but still a little short of the Merc’s mark. However, the Big Cat will actu- ally edge out its continental rival if given the chance to build up to its enhanced 178mph top speed – that’s a 2mph increase over the old version, for the record. An eight-speed automatic trans- mission working in tandem with launch control sends power to the all-wheel drive system, which can distribute torque to the front and rear axles independently. Elsewhere, throttle response has been sharpened, suspension stiffened, steering optimised and exhaust mapping enhanced in a meticulous effort to make this the quickest F-Pace ever. The F-Pace, even in SVR guise, is ultimately a multi-faceted vehicle. Nevertheless, the difference as you switch from Comfort to Dynamic drive mode – Jaguar’s equivalent of the ‘big red button’ – is more palpable than it’s ever been. just as well, then, that the 2021 model also has more stopping power than ever before, thanks to its front and rear two-piece disc brakes ably supported by a new integrated power booster. Left to run in the more leisurely Comfort mode, the F-Pace SVR’s adaptive suspension continually adjusts damper stiffness through tiny height sensors at each corner of the vehicle which track the roll and pitch of the car over a hun- dred times a second. As well as the more circum- spect Eco and Rain-Ice-Snow drive modes, the new incarnation of the SVR possesses a new and improved Hill Hold system that squeezes the brakes indefinitely when stationary on a gradient until the driver steps back on the gas pedal. Other handy perks include Active Road Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Clear Exit Monitor and an array of parking cameras to provide the car’s all-new 3D Surround Camera technology. Finally, drivers get an updated version of Jaguar’s smart key fob, complete with a watch and longer-lasting battery. Due to hit UK roads early next year, the Jaguar F-PACE SVR starts from £77,595 OTR. This price tag lands it more or less in the middle of the pack vis-à-vis its key adver- saries, ranging from the sub-£70K Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio to the rather costlier BMW X3 M. ■
Placed under the microscope, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this week’s vehicle in question was some kind of supercar. A 0-62mph sprint time dipping below four seconds, reinforced brakes and a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine, which one of the famed Italian racing stables are dealing with here? However, zoom out – quite a lot – and you’ll see that this is no thoroughbred mid-engine coupe. It is in fact, a mid-size SUV. And a potent one at that. Whichever way you look at it, the F-Pace is a heck of a road pres- ence. Weighing in a just shy of two tonnes, it isn’t going to fly under the radar at the best of times, not least kitted out in its SVR tracksuit and trainers. Just like the previous incar- nation. The 2021 performance SUV flaunts it muscular physique like an eighties action hero, only with a raft of twenty-first century refinements. Surrounding the new SVR- badged grille, twin blade-like elements criss-cross the revised front bumper and side air intakes. These particular openings sport the same grille mesh design first used by the show-stopping Jaguar XE SV Project 8 saloon. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, then simply know that this insane 600bhp supercar-hunting levia- than laid much of the groundwork for Jaguar’s subsequent SV-led projects – the F-Pace SVR included. The front and rear headlights, meanwhile, take their cue from another illustrious member of the Big Cat’s stable, the all-electric I-Pace, whose trademark double J daytime running lights and slim- line chicane rear lights also fea- ture here. The new SVR is even burlier than before, evidenced by its extended bonnet and more pronounced power dome. This is in turn flanked by a pair of louvre vents and, on the subject of hot air, quad tailpipes take pride of place to provide a symphony of horsepower when your foot hits the floor. A set of 22-inch forged alloy wheels finishes off the exterior refresh, each five-spoke design
