Homeless support given £1m cash boost
A £1M cash boost was given by the government to BCP Council to help support homeless peo- ple during the pandemic with medical help and emergency accommodation. It was made up from a £140,000 award from the gov- ernment’s cold weather fund, and a £436,000 grant towards funding health, social care and supported housing services to help clinically extremely vulner- able people sleeping rough dur- ing the winter. A further £494,000 was given to support those in emergency accommodation with drug and alcohol issues. Cllr Robert Lawton, BCP Council cabinet member for housing, said: “We welcome this extra funding which will be es- sential in protecting the most vulnerable during the pandem- ic. “Following the latest lock- down, the government has urged local authorities to re-
double its efforts to accommo- date people sleeping rough and encourage them to register with a GP so that they can receive a Covid vaccine in line with the priority groups. “For us, our work to support people off the streets and into emergency accommodation has never stopped since the first lockdown in March 2020. “We will continue to offer sup- port and accommodation to anyone who is sleeping rough in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. “ Andrew Teale, outreach manager in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole for the St Mungo’s homelessness charity, said: “We and other homelessness charities urged the government to provide a crucial and decisive response to support people sleeping rough who now face the double threat of severely cold weather and a continued health emer- gency.”
chased my property in Decem- ber 2016 on the strength that no further properties would be built behind for a minimum of seven years and less than one year later an application had been submitted.” In a statement to the A&T, a spokesperson for Hoburne said the plans had been flagged as far back as 2017 with a public consultation giving people the opportunity for feedback. It went on: “Subsequently, planning approval was granted and at no point has the busi- ness stated that we would not build in that area. “As requested by the local authority, we have allowed for green space in the plans and the highways department would have been consulted on traffic matters during the application process. The final designs, in - cluding external materials for the properties, are still to be agreed.” Hoburne said that although plans have not been finalised for phase 9, it envisaged a mix of eight one-bedroom flats and eight two-bedroom, plus 15 three-bedroom houses and sev- en four-bedroom. Final details will be submit- ted to BCP Council later.
A HOUSEBUILDER which won permission for 38 more homes as part of a wider development in Christchurch has rejected criticism by residents who be- lieved the land was to be left as open space. Hoburne Developments was given approval by BCP Council for outline plans to construct the new properties as the final phase of the Hoburne Farm Estate, south of the A35 Lynd- hurst Road. The company said leaflets outlining designs for phase 9 were delivered to residents on the estate as early as 2017. But the plans have angered some who said in objections to BCP Council they were “led to believe” the green area was go- ing to be left as it is. One said: “Many people chose this estate because of the open spaces which makes it a pleas- ure to live here. “But in the last couple of BY ANTONELLA LAZZERI Residents thought the land, set for 38 homes, would be left empty FORMER Commoners’ De- fence Association chair Graham Ferris has joined the Verderers’ Court following the resigna- tion of Dionis Macnair late last year. Announcing the co-option of Dr Ferris, Official Verderer Lord Manners said he would be eli- gible to serve until November 2024, when Miss Macnair’s term had been due to expire. Welcoming Dr Ferris to the January meeting, Lord Man- ners said he would bring “a RESIDENTS have been warned to watch out for scammers us- ing the coronavirus vaccination programme to trick people out of their money. Hampshire County Coun- cil and the NHS issued a joint statement urging people to be aware of fraudsters pretending to be officials and asking for a payment. They said those most at risk of being targeted are the elder- ly, as well as residents living alone, self-isolating or in finan - cial difficulty. Many scammers are using increasingly sophis- ticated methods to target peo- ple, they said. Cllr Judith Grajewski, HCC cabinet member for public health, said: “Sadly, there have been cases reported of dis- honest individuals approach- ing members of the public to offer vaccines in return for pay- ment. “Therefore, we want to re- mind everyone that the Cov- id-19 vaccine is free of charge

years, houses seem to be crammed in and open spaces forgotten about.” Forty-four people signed a petition against the scheme on four hectares of what is current- ly grass and scrubland. The company said 40% of the homes will be affordable hous-
ing, which has also angered some estate residents who claim they were told no such provision would be made. One letter of objection said: “Building more homes will have an adverse effect on the general wellbeing of existing residents on this estate. It will cause ex-
cessive noise and traffic.” Some people living on the es- tate said there was no need for phase 9 to be built as a plan to erect 875 houses north of the A35 Lyndhurst Road, which the estate borders, has already been given the go-ahead. One man claimed: “I pur-

She was the first woman to serve in the role. He added: “Since then, many tributes have rightly been paid to Miss Macnair’s remarkable long period of service and con- tribution to the workings of the court.”
BROCKENHURST Parish Council has frozen its share of the council tax for the fifth year running. A Band D property in the vil- lage will pay £42.49 for parish services in 2021/22 after mem- bers agreed the charge at their latest meeting. Parish clerk Mary Pattison explained the overall take had
risen to £80,566, largely because there were 22 new dwellings in the village paying council tax. The current combined coun- cil tax bill for 2020/21 for the av- erage Band D household in the New Forest is just over £1,836, made up of demands from par- ish, district and county coun- cils, plus the police and fire ser - vices.

and that the NHS will get in touch when it is your turn to receive it. “No one from the NHS would come and knock on your door unannounced and you would not receive emails inviting you to click on links. “If anyone approaches you in this way or attempts to force or coerce you into handing over funds – in person or otherwise – always contact the police.” Cllr Grajewski added: “No one can pay for it and jump the queue. If a private organisation contacts you suggesting they can provide the vaccine, it will be a scam.” The NHS is currently prior- itising people most at risk from the coronavirus to receive the vaccine. However, all eligible adults will eventually be offered the jab. Dr Barbara Rushton, of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Partnership of Clinical Com- missioning Groups, said: “When it is the right time, you will be
contacted to make an appoint- ment. “Most of us will receive a let- ter either from our GP or the national booking system, which will include all the informa- tion you need. Some services are currently also phoning and texting patients to invite them in. “We will be in contact in due course, so there is no need to contact your GP surgery to re- quest the vaccine or check if you will be invited.” Other coronavirus-related scams include: l Sales of fake products such as face coverings, anti-virus kits and sanitisers l Bogus healthcare workers trying to gain access to homes l Fake charity workers offering to do shopping or cleaning l Emails asking for dona- tions to the NHS Fraud can be reported to Ac- tion Fraud via 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk
