THIS has 150 member businesses and promotes local food, drink, and craft producers as well local retailers of these products. The New Forest Marque is awarded to produce which has been grown, reared, caught, brewed, produced or processed within the New Forest. For many businesses it opens up whole new net- work of local suppliers and contacts. As one producer commented: “It has made such a dif- ference to us in terms of operationally running our business as well as growing our business with new cli- ents. The variety, range and quality of producers that the Marque supports has been eye-opening. “ Small, local businesses are surprisingly among the largest employer of jobs both locally and nationally and provide the most local jobs to communities. Not only this, but local employ- ers are more likely to pay a higher average wage than their commercial chain counterparts. Helping to grow the number of jobs in the area makes for a better place to live and work which then creates a healthy econ- omy for the community. We may believe that the best deals can only be found online but this may not be the full picture. Through TV, radio and online adverts we are constantly shown great deals that seem too good

to be true, and often this is sadly the case. However, you might be surprised to see just how competitive the prices are in your local shops and businesses. For example, TV adverts for nationally known com- panies often claim to have the best deals around, but if you do your homework you may discover independent companies actually provide the same types of deals, if not better. One local example is of a New Forest mushroom grower which was able to sell its produce at a cheaper rate than the local super- market – and still make a reasonable return.
