 By Matt Lawrence, Motoring Correspondent REBOOTED seven-seater SUV offers up diesel and hybrid power for 2020, plug-in hybrid on the way too.

a dying breed, these machines are often more at home off the road than on it, and sometimes prove more than a little ill-mannered and skittish when asked to play it straight on the asphalt. Then come the landed gentry in their bijoux barn conversions. For the likes of the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, besmirch- ing their gleaming alloys in the mud is a perfectly manageable if somewhat unsavoury detour from whisking seven passengers around in cruise liner levels of luxury. Finally, we have the up-and-com- ing breed of free-range, reason- ably-sourced people’s champi- ons. For many of these sensible, faithful, if slightly unspectacular companions, brushing hedges on the B-road is just about the most adventurous driving scenario they’ll ever experience. Many of these seven-seater ‘soft-roaders’

are increasingly less concerned with off-road competence – or AWD ability of any description in the case of the Peugeot 5008 – and more worried about their green, and specifically, hybrid credentials. Nevertheless, these are by far the biggest selling variety of three-row SUVs today and arguably the key reason why many venerable old people carrier favourites like the Seat Alhambra and Ford Galaxy have become an increasingly rare sight on our roads. It stands to reason, then, that there are many, many options open to anyone in the market for a down-to-earth, well-mannered SUV that’s also large enough to accommodate big family groups. A lot of UK drivers have found the Kia Sorento, the Korean com- pany’s flagship SUV, to be a highly capable bus for large families throughout its 18 years of service

here in Europe. Slotting in above the Stonic, Niro and Sportage crossovers, the Sorento is essen- tially a ‘mid-size’ seven-seater in the same ballpark as the afore- mentioned Peugeot 5008 as well as other Asian rivals like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander and upcoming new Toyota Highlander. 2020 sees the release of the all- new fourth-generation Sorento. Yes, it’s still big enough to carry a rugby sevens team and still AWD- equipped but also more chis- el-jawed and brainier than ever. Even a brief peruse of the 2020 Sorento reveals a far more aggres- sive persona than its curvy prede- cessor. Styled with more angles than Pythagoras’ snooker table, its bodywork is absolutely peppered with sharp lines and creases. This new take is particularly evident at the front, where head- lights, daytime running lights and fog lights are all LED-powered as standard. The front grille is fin- ished in black with both front and rear skid plates in silver. Although the side-on view isn’t really the new Sorento’s most distinguish- ing angle, it does show off the chrome shark fin trim behind the back doors, not to mention it’s gleaming alloys, available in 17-, 19- or gargantuan 20-inch spec depending on trim level. Silver roof rails add a bit of practical as well as visual clout, while the com- pletely revamped rear end fea- tures the ‘Sorento’ name stamped across the width of the tailgate. Arguably though, it’s the pair of blocky two-piece vertical brake lights that steal your gaze. These, like the rear fog lights and brake light strip mounted just under the roof spoiler, are fully LED-lit as standard. As the first vehicle to be based on Kia’s new-generation midsize SUV platform, the fourth-gener- ation Sorento’s body is slightly elongated compared to its prede- cessor. The upshot is more cargo space than before – 187 litres with all seven seats up. This grows to as much as 910 litres with the back row folded down and a cavernous 2,100 litres with all but the front seats out of the way. Your choice of trim and equip- ment is threefold; the hand- ily named ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘4’ grades. While even the top-tier Sorento ‘4’ doesn’t come close to troubling the opulent interior specs of the Audi Q7, Mercedes GLS or even Lexus RX for that matter, that doesn’t mean that Kia has dropped the proverbial ball here. In entry level guise, black cloth upholstery and light grey headlin- ing give the cabin an acceptably smart two-tone appearance while both front seats and the steering wheel are heated as standard. Splashing out on the ‘4’ trim will earn you an interior upgrade to Nappa leather as well as a 10-way power adjustable and ventilated driver’s seat. Of course, the days when cor- rectly configuring your seven seats required a doctorate in ori- gami and a colourful collection of curse words are thankfully behind us. Nevertheless, getting to grips with folding and unfolding three rows of seats can still be a bit of a headache. The Sorento seeks to smooth things over with fully-auto- mated remote folding and reclin- ing for the 60:40 split second row and a 50:50 split and fold arrange- ment for rearmost seats. USB charge ports are handily provided throughout whilst dual-zone air conditioning reaches all the way to the back seats with fans for third row passengers. The standard technology pro- vided is really quite generous. In our estimation, adjustable and heated door mirrors, an auto-dim- ming rear-view mirror, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen aremore than enough to be getting on with. The latter display incorpo- rates a reversing camera with front and rear parking sensors as well as

a DAB radio with Bluetooth, voice recognition and music streaming. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay supply the customary smartphone integration. The list of additional goodies goes on – providing your budget will stretch to the £46,945 grade ‘4’ price tag. These top-of-the- range Sorentos feature panoramic sunroofs and head-up displays as well as 12-speaker BOSE audio systems and expanded 10.25- inch touchscreens. As opposed to the standard reversing cam- era, this enlarged display debuts Kia’s 360-degree Around View Monitor for tackling those tricky manoeuvres. From launch, the next-gen Kia Sorento comes with either diesel or petrol-electric hybrid power. The latter is available across all trim levels and throws together a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, 44.2kW electric motor and 1.49kWh lithium-ion battery in hybrid harmony. Combined, the internal combustion engine and motor put out a healthy 226bhp and 258lb/ft of torque. With a six-speed auto box as standard, the hybrid Sorento dispatches 0-60mph in 8.7 seconds. Available exclusively in the mid- range ‘3’ trim grade is Kia’s diesel powered Sorento. With a new four-cylinder 2.2-litre unit under the bonnet producing 199bhp and 324lb/ft of torque, this lighter alu- minium powertrain accelerates up to 60mph from a standstill in 9.1 seconds before topping out at 127mph. The 2.2-litre CRDi is paired with Kia’s new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and with that diesel grunt on board, is comfortably capable of hauling half a tonne more cargo than its predecessor. As per rumours, a plug-in hybrid powertrain is indeed in the pipe- line, though it won’t go on sale here before the new year. Not only the cleanest but also the most powerful Sorento variant, the all-new Sorento PHEV uses the same 1.6-litre T-GDi as its mild-hybrid sibling but combines it with a high capacity 13.8kWh lithi- um-ion polymer battery pack and a more powerful 66.9kW electric motor. Together, they up the ante to 261bhp, sending power to all four wheels through the same six- speed automatic gearbox as the mild hybrid. As is invariably the case with this particular breed of SUV, the choice of drive modes reflects the broad range of environments in which the Sorento could be reasonably expected to handle itself. ‘Comfort’, ‘Eco’, ‘Sport’ and ‘’Smart’ modes are clearly more geared towards various levels of on-road performance while Terrain Mode Select focuses on the dirty stuff. Soft sand, loose rocks and steep inclines shouldn’t be an issue for the standard AWD setup with Terrain Mode Select providing a further three tailored off-road settings – mud, snow, and sand – to really save your bacon if conditions get a little hostile. Nonetheless, we all know that the 2020 Kia Sorento is no hard-bitten green-laner. Indeed, the vast majority of drivers will almost certainly find the new model’s Smart Cruise Control with Lane Follow Assist far handier on a daily basis than anything in the terrain select armoury. Safety tech for the road is therefore a priority, with Forward Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Warning, Hill-start Assist and Downhill Brake Control all standard equipment. Backed up as usual by Kia’s industry-best seven-year/100,000- mile warranty, the all-new Kia Sorento seven-seat SUV is availa- ble to order now. The entry-level ‘2’ trim starts at £38,845 with the diesel-powered ‘3’ 2.2 CRDi cost- ing £41,245. A top-spec Sorento ‘4’, meanwhile, will set you back £46,945. As for the PHEV, we won’t know pricing details until closer to launch in early 2021. 

A quick glance across the flock of big SUVs out there on the mar- ket today will show that there’s more than one way to go about the whole seven seat thing. In the boggy top field, sit the old guard of gruff and grizzled hardcore off-roaders in the mould of the Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Shogun Sport. Arguably
