Christchurch’s Barnes wins national youth championships CHRISTCHURCH Sailing

Club member Drew Barnes has become the Laser youth national champion after a superb race at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy. The two-day event sees youth sailors mixing it up with seasoned professionals. However, Barnes remained unfazed during the six races to come sixth overall, and first U19 and U21 to become the RYA ILCA 7 Youth National Champion 2020. The youngster’s highlight of the event came in Sunday’s second race of the day with a third-place finish, beating former-European champion Lorenzo Chiavarini and many other established international sailors. After the impressive showing, he has now qualified for the 2021 European championships. Over the past six years, Drew has qualified for various regional and national squads including Optimist, Radial and Laser 4.7, in which he was ranked second in the YOUNG sailing stars are appealing for financial aid as they chase their Olympic dream, ahead of European winter training camps. Royal Lymington Yacht Clubmembers Vita Heathcote and Ryan Orr have their sights set on making the 2024 Paris Olympics in the mixed 470 fleet, having teamed up last year. Their preparation plans for 2020 have been somewhat disrupted thanks to the “chaos” of the Covid-19 pandemic cancelling the world and European championships. However, the pair have managed to fit in some “epic training” in Weymouth’s waters across the past 48 days, adding: “Having the Olympic teams stuck in Weymouth has been of major benefit to us as we have had intense racing and access to all the top tips. “Constant training has allowed us to rapidly identify the areas that we really need to work on before the worlds in March. Four days a week 470 training then racing Etchells most weekends in Cowes has kept us pretty flat out!” They added: “Our progress will continue to ramp up this winter with multiple training camps in Vilamoura, December to February, as

Totton created numerous chances after the break and Ethan Taylor set up Feeney, who fired over before Hisham Kasimu shot wide after cutting in from the right. Griffin and the impressive Taylor worked the Basingstoke Keeper Julian Schwatzer, Brett Williams missed a golden chance and Taylor struck the post after a great dummy by Williams. Instead of being out of sight, the Stags were then pegged back by a deflected cross and it was suddenly game on when in truth it should’ve been game over. Totton reacted well as, a moment later, Griffin worked his way along the left-hand byline, beat a defender and rifled a shot into the far side of the net from an near- impossible angle. It was a brilliant goal which had the Totton contingent in the stand out of their seats in delight. In the dying moments,

Totton’s impressive 3-1 away victory at a physical Larkhall Athletic side in Bath in midweek. After a frenetic start the hosts went ahead in the 17th minute after a corner kick, before Craig Feeney levelled the scores when he followed up his own shot and chipped the rebound home. The second period saw Totton gradually get into the half, and they went ahead when sub Ethan Taylor scored six minutes after coming on following brilliant play by Jack Masterton and Sam Griffin. The game got very physical towards the end, culminating with a red card for a Larkhall man after the linesman saw a kick while a Stags man was on the floor. Totton capitalised on the hosts being a man down when two minutes later Taylor squared the ball to fellow substitute Hisham Kasimu, who notched his first Stags goal.

LEAGUE leaders AFC Totton won the battle of the early season pace-setters, pipping second-placed Basingstoke with a brilliant 3-2 victory. However, in truth, the Stags should have won by more after missing a string of chances. The hosts started the better, and Totton’s George Colson had to clear a Bradley Wilson effort off the line in just the fifth minute, following a bit of pinball in the visitors’ box. Totton took a 27th- minute lead with their most penetrative move of the match, as Sam Griffin’s low cross to the far post was swept in by Craig Feeney. The Stags doubled their lead on 41 minutes after Ethan Taylor played a lovely ball down the left for Griffin, who got in behind the Dragons defence; his cross was half- cleared to Freddie Read, who

Then they have the European championships in Hyeres, France, next May. “As always, we would be so grateful if anyone has contacts in any of these venues or knows of anywhere we can stay. This has greatly helped us in the past,” the pair said. “Right now our priorities are aimed at getting funds for coaching. We have identified this as the most important thing in our campaign at the moment. Even after Horsham’s third goal, Forest were always in the game and had chances to equalise once more with Isla Troup and Ella Adams both going close. Horsham rallied and scored two goals in the final seven minutes to finish the game off, but the final score line flattered them somewhat. New Forest’s next match is a critical bottom-of-the-table clash away at Lewes. New Forest: Snook, Brewis, Cammegh, Biddlecombe, Jones, Adams, Lloyd, Noble, Gavin, Lock, Waine, Troup, Sharp.

Morrison’s Blackfield double downs Alresford Sydenhams Premier League Blackfield & Langley 4 Alresford Town 0

A CONNAL Morrison double helped Blackfield continue their fine start to the season and comfortably overcome Alresford Town. The visitors attacked during the opening period without creating much of substance but Blackfield resisted well and gradually asserted themselves in the game – taking the lead when River Smith rounded the keeper and slotted home. From then on, Blackfield dominated and were unlucky not to score more before the break, but they pressed home their superiority in the second, which was played in heavy rain. Morrison fired home his first on 55 minutes and Blackfield were home, although not quite so dry, on 69 minutes when subsitute Domenico Panesar- Dower’s strike punished the visitors’ failure to clear a corner. Porchester with all three points, Brockenhurst manager Pat McManus admitted he was still peeved with his side’s recent performances. Gaffer McManus has been rankled by recent below-par showings, including back-to- back losses at Lymington Town and Fareham. Even after the win, the slow start means the Badgers are mired at 14th in the Sydenhams Premier League on eight points from seven games. The Badgers took the spoils in their latest contest thanks to Brad Magookin’s double, but McManus told the A&T, it would take more to lift his sullied mood. “I’m still more disappointed with our previous couple of results than I am excited about this one,” he said. mental health issues. His training for the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycle and 26.2- mile run challenge began in March just as the nation went into lockdown. He completed the swim in 63 minutes at Hordle Cliffs where he was supported by swimmers from the Lymington Triathlon Club (LTC) and his friend Ben Smith. After the swim, he made his way up the steps while removing his wetsuit where he transitioned for the cycle. He was then joined by another member of the LTC, John Paulson. The ride took them on loops through Brockenhurst, Beaulieu and Lyndhurst with various friends and family cheering him on along the way. Chester transitioned for the run in Hordle, before making his way through Milford and along the Lymington sea wall, with his parents supporting on bikes. He completed the impressive feat in 10 hours 56 minutes. So far Chester has raised £3,000. To donate, visit bit. ly/3kqMYtt

Long quickly equalised in what was a keenly fought contest. However, Matt Casey’s close finish and James Thomson’s penalty secured the win for the visitors. It leaves Milton – for whom Charlie Turner won man of the match – 16th in the table, but with plenty to daw on from a battling performance.

IT was a difficult day for New Forest as Horsham won 5-2 in a match that was far more competitive than the scoreline suggests. The first half was an even contest with Horsham scoring first. Lia Waine beat a defender and the goalkeeper to slot home and level the score, giving her side hope. After the match, Sydenhams WessexLeague results secretary, Lee Bray, told the A&T: “After a match is abandoned, the league committee gather and decide what to do next.

“Given that the score was so close and there was still 13 minutes of play left, my guess would be that the match will be ordered to be replayed.”

raised more than £3,000 to boost an initiative protecting male health. Chester Allen, 24, originally intended to complete the Barcelona Ironman on 4th October but the race was suspended due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Rather than let his training go to waste, he decided to complete the event with the support of family and friends in the New Forest. When speaking on his motivation to complete the challenge, Chester said: “My grandad John passed away from prostate cancer, he had a hard slog for the last five years of his life facing off against cases of pneumonia and cancer, which changed his life and, eventually, took him from us. “The idea came about after finishing the Bournemouth Marathon, which was horrendous, so I thought ‘let’s definitely swim and cycle for a combined 100+ miles as a warm-up next time’.

Moments later, Phoenix completed their comeback. Watkins whipped a ball into Miller who took it past a player and buried it in the bottom right-hand corner, sparking jubilant celebrations. New Milton manager Kristian Weller said afterwards: “I am disappointed for the girls as they deserved so much more out of the match.”

Mudeford Phoenix 4 A SEVEN-goal thriller culmi- nated in Phoenix inflicting Mil- ton’s first defeat of the season; the home side twice took the lead before two goals in the fi- nal three minutes settled the contest. The visitors started the game strongly and took the lead after a mix-up in the Linnets’ defence allowed Phoenix’s Freeman- Woods to set up Machado. Both teams worked hard to take control of the game. Freya Jennings had a good shot well saved and Grace Ridgley rounded the visitors’ keeper who somehow recovered to save her goal-bound effort. However, Milton were not to be denied and on the stroke of half-time Jennings lashed home. The Linnets spent the first 20 minutes of the second period camped in the Mudeford half

The second-half saw Honey Batchelor, who played the first half in midfield, take over in goal with Shinn moving into attack, and Bashley eventually took over. They were frustrated by some excellent goalkeeping until a great run from Shinn found the back of the net. The last 25 minutes was all Bashley as they worked hard as a team to preserve their lead and a clean sheet to claim all three points. The Bashley Girls were playing in their new grey away kit, which is sponsored by Hoburne Bashley, after the visitors arrived in their home kit which clashed with Bashley’s.

FRUSTRATED for long periods by a resolute Chineham side, Bashley eventually ran out two- goal winners. Bashley initially had to soak up pressure to preserve the deadlock and were helped by some excellent goalkeeping from Edyth Shinn. The first goal came just before half-time when Kasia Stopyra pushed the ball forward to the midfield, and a great assist found Freya Bradfield in the Chineham penalty box who smashed home the opener.
