By Glynn Williams MBE, Motoring Correspondent SPORTS utility vehicles, a niche introduced with styling touches to give bulky 4x4 cars a more premium appearance, are certainly making their mark as the manufac- turers turn up the wick under the bonnet. BMW X5 M Competition (fuel con- sumption combined 21.7 – 22.1 mpg) and new X6 M Competition (21.6mpg combined) to make a unique place for themselves on the world’s roads Their performance attributes set new standards and now they are also raising the bar once again in terms of exclusivity with a First Edi- tion specification accentuating the effervescent and distinctive char- acter of the BMW M models in the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) segments to stylish effect.
This gives 0-62mph accelera- tion in around 3.4sec to push you back into the body-hugging sports seats.. Precisely coordinated design cues for the exterior and interior lend the special edition takes on the new M Competition models the status of intoxicating rarities at the high-performance reaches of their respective segments. The BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver special paint finish available exclusively for the spe- cial-edition models showcases the exterior design of the new duo to extremely impressive effect. This matt paint finish ensures the muscular proportions, clear forms and signature M details of the body design come authenti- cally to the fore, regardless of how the light hits the car. The two special-edition cars can also be specified with the BMW Individual Frozen Marina Bay Blue special paint finish. This exterior shade is one of the BMW special finishes now available ex-factory
for the BMW X5 M Competition, X6 M Competition, X5, X6 and X7. These special paint shades are increasing in number all the time. The high-quality paint finishes team up with M light-alloy wheels in star-spoke design with a Jet Black, high-gloss finish available exclusively for the special-edition models. The wheels (front 21-inch, rear 22-inch) are fitted with mixed-size tyres. The exterior styling also includes selected body elements made from carbon-fibre-rein- forced plastic (CFRP). Like theMCarbonexteriormirror caps for the two special-edition models, the M Carbon rear spoiler for the new BMW X6 M Competi- tion has an understated feeling of the racetrack. An M Carbon engine compartment cover is likewise part of First Edition specification. BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in exclusive bi-colour Silverstone/Midnight Blue ensures the interior and BMW Individual paint finishes fit together neatly.
Black Alcantara inserts in the seat bolsters and contrast stitch- ing in Sakhir Orange emphasise the sporting contours of the M multifunction seats. The eye-catch- ing contrast stitching also bring distinctive flourishes to the door panel trim and instrument panel. Taking its cue from the leath- er-covered instrument panel, the BMW Individual headliner in Alcan- tara is likewise in Midnight Blue. The high-tech and extremely lightweight material CFRP also features in the interior of the spe- cial-edition models. Adornments include carbon fibre interior trim strips availa- ble in a special, market-specific design. The silver-coloured ‘First Edition 1/250’ lettering – which is applied to the carbon-fibre strip before the clear coat seal – high- lights the exclusive character of the special-edition models. If these interior trim strips are specified, the model badge on the cover for the cup holders has the same design.
This was clear in the latest Top Gear TV show where two high- priced all-wheel-drive twin turbo 4-litre V8s, a mighty 190mph 640PS Lamborghini Urus and the 590PS Audi RS6 Avant – essentially an estate car – went head to head. But BMW has been putting a coupe slant on its big X-series SUVs and sports activity vehicles (SAV) for 20 years and has now unveiled the M Competition versions of the X5 and X6 to carve out an exclusive niche with prices to match, starting at around £110,000. Supreme power, an imposing thirst for forward progress and extravagant styling allow the new
The two special-edition newcom- ers are being made by BMW in the US in a limited run of 250 exam- ples each and can be ordered with immediate effect. Their air of exclusivity creates the ideal environment in which to enjoy the unmistakable driving experience laid on by a high-rev- ving 4.4-litre V8 engine with two turbochargers and 625PS, M-spe- cific suspension and M xDrive all- wheel drive.

year, raising the risk of another job-threatening and mobility-im- peding ban under totting up. Motorists are classified as new drivers for two years after pass- ing their driving test and can be put back to square one with two speeding tickets. More experi- enced drivers with penalties also face a raised risk of disqualification if they hit the 12-point totting limit Making calls or texting on a hand-held mobile while driving is already against the law, however scrolling through music playlists, playing games or taking photo- graphs have up until now not been included. And drivers have been able to exploit the legal loophole because these activities fell out- side the scope of ‘interactive communication’. An example is from 2019, when
the High Court overturned the conviction of 51-year-old builder Ramsey Baretto, who had been using his phone to film the scene of a collision as he drove by. GEM chief executive Neil Worth warned it was now vital for more roads policing officers to be avail- able to ensure the new law would be effective. “The update to this law is welcome, because any activ- ity involving a mobile phone while driving is a potentially fatal distrac- tion,” he said. “But we must see more police patrols out there looking for the drivers who continue to flout the rules. Action needs to be taken against anyone who is prepared to risk their own life – or someone else’s – by selfishly using a hand- held phone while driving.” Specific mobile phone driving laws were introduced in December 2003 which saw motorists handed a £60 fine for an offence before rising to £100 in 2013. Fines increased to £200 and penalty points endorsements doubled in 2017, to act as a further deterrent. GEM has some simple tips regarding mobile phones and driv- ing and urges drivers to avoid any
use of a mobile while driving, even if it is hands-free and linked to the car infotainment system. It points out that drivers are allowed to use a mobile phone when safely parked, with the engine off and the handbrake on and advises against picking up the phone in any other driving situa- tion, including when stationary at traffic lights or queueing in traffic. The only exception to this is if it is an emergency and it would be unsafe or impractical to stop, in which case you may call 999. GEM urges drivers not to assume that using a hands-free kit means they have dealt with the risk because they can still be dis- tracted from the task of safe driv- ing, and could still be prosecuted for not being in control of the vehi- cle – an offence that carries a £100 fine and three penalty points. It recommends taking a few minutes before a journey to make important calls or to check voice messages and emails. Work together with friends, family, colleagues and work contacts to remove the expectation that anyone should all be available all the time.
AN EXTENSION on laws curbing the use of hand- held mobile phones while driving with penalties that put newly quali- fied drivers off the road has been welcomed by road safety and break- down organisation GEM Motoring Assist. Under the new legislation, driv- ers who use hand-held phones in any way while at the wheel – such as for texting and social media – will face a fine of £200 and six points on their licence – a points penalty.that means newly quali- fied drivers are disqualified and have to resit their driving tests. They also carry the points on their licence into a third
