Andrew’s Forest deer takes calendar top spot
OAKHAVEN has named a photo competition winner to headline its first fund- raising calendar. The image to win the front- page slot for 2021 was entitled I Can See You, and showed a deer herd at Black Knoll in the New Forest taken by Bill Andrews. Presented with the first copy by Tom Sexton of Meadens Skoda, Mr Andrews thanked or- ganisers for “the honour of hav- ing my photo as the cover shot in your beautiful calendar”. The hospice launched the competition for keen photogra- phers earlier this year. Twelve local businesses each spon- sored a month and were re- sponsible for choosing the win- ning photograph for their page. It was a difficult decision for the team at Meadens, with Mr Andrews’ striking deer image being one of many high-qual- ity entries. Sales manager Mr Sexton said: “The calendar looks great and we are very happy to be a part of it.” Jo Cayla, Oakhaven’s com- munity and corporate fundrais- er, said: “We are thrilled with Hospice

It is a local collab- oration which has been made possible because of the gener- osity of our sponsors. “The photography competi- tion really captured the imag- ination over lockdown and we had a fantastic response, the high standard and the variety of the entries has been phenome- nal.” The calendar is available from Meadens’ Tom Sexton (left) and photographer Bill Andrews

Mueller defended the location. Cllr Mueller argued the rack had been placed outside Tesco as there had been “near misses” with cyclists and pedestrians in the store’s car park, where there are already some racks. Cllr Croker said the triangle- shaped design at either end of the racks was for safety and due to the fact grazing animals roamed the village. While the racks have proved popular with cyclists, they have been divisive among villagers – some of whom have written letters to the A&T in recent weeks. One resident slammed the idea as “idiocy” and wondered why the parish council was being “so kind to the cyclist”, especially when the Tesco car park already had cycle racks. Speaking after the meeting, parish clerk Jim Bailey told the A&T: “The scheme is due to be in until the end of May 2021, but will be subject to review. “Any proposed changes will be put to the council to debate and pass resolutions on in the usual way.”
knew of people who were “not happy” about it, adding: “People are upset about the one outside of Tesco. Those spaces have been prime parking spaces up until now.” Cllr Michael Harris was in no doubt the racks were “successful” but was concerned they were “ugly”. He added: “This is a good scheme but I am a little bit worried about the look of the village, which I think is looking a bit untidy.” He was not in favour of an idea championed by Cllr Michael Croker to feature local children’s artwork on the racks, claiming that could amount to “graffiti”. “I think they are good, I think they are here to stay,” Cllr Harris said. “I would certainly consider moving the one outside of Tesco to the old post office site [on Brookley Road].” Cllr John Wingham agreed the racks “seemed to be working” but stressed they were a “temporary scheme” and aspects could be changed. Town groups get cash from Covid pot However, those outside the Tesco cover one-and-a-half of the two parking spaces there and have provoked objections. Parish councillors at a recent meeting agreed installing the rackshadbeena successdespite strong complaints about the facility which has replaced two parking spaces outside Tesco in Brookley Road. Cllr Alan Bartlett said he ORGANISATIONS in Lym- ington have benefited from a £50,000 Covid emergency sup- port set up by the town council. Applications for the cash were invited, and around 33 businesses and charities, including St Barbe Museum, St Mark’s Community Hall and the local hospital radio, received a share of the pot. The council’s latest policy and resources meeting heard much of the money was used for PPE and technology that enabled virtual ways of working. Cllr Andy Ash-Vie told members: “All applicants were incredibly grateful when they had the news they’d received a grant. “It’s too early for much feedback but it is clear that all applicants were severely impacted, so this has really helped them.” A CYCLE rack at the centre of a row in Brockenhurst could be moved after complaints from villagers about how “ugly” it is. Built at a cost of £11,000, three sets of racks in the village centre were requested by the parish council and village business association to encourage healthy lifestyles and make it Covid-19 safe.
