2021 Hyundai i20 priced up for UK release

 By Matt Lawrence, Motoring Correspondent £18,595 will buy you Hyundai’s answer to the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208, complete with upgraded kit and hybrid power.

design team have avoided too much chopping and changing for the third-generation hatchback. The 24mm lower roofline and 30mm wider body lend it that sleek look which customers seem to crave these days, whilst mar- ginal increases in overall length and wheelbase mean there is a tad more room for passengers and cargo this time round. Taking its cue from the recently revamped Hyundai i10 city car, the 2021-spec i20 gets a welcome freshen up on the styling front. Matching the lower and wider stance, the stretched front grille takes up most of the front fascia. Meanwhile, designers have tucked a new quarter window in behind the C-pillar, framed by chrome trim that arrows all the way up from below the wing mirrors. The most eye-catching addition as far as the rear view goes has to be the i20’s full-width LED lamp, strad- dling the boot and linking the new taillight clusters. It won’t have escaped the atten- tion of the most eagle-eyed and budget conscious among you that the 2021 Hyundai i20 isn’t exactly cheap – at least not comparatively. Back in 2015 – remember those halcyon days – a base-spec second generation i20 would’ve set you back around £14,000. This begs the question; how exactly has Hyundai earned the right to demand from us the cash equivalent of two thirds of a Dacia Sandero over and above the outgoing model’s price tag? The devil, as is so often the case, is in the detail. Hyundai’s decision to dump the former entry level S Connect trim and dive straight in at SE Connect specification at least goes some way to explain- ing the extra financial hit. Offering a far higher level of goodies and gadgets than its predecessor, SE Connect models get 16-inch alloy

wheels, LED daytime running lights and halogen projector headlamps as standard. Interior equipment is noticeably more bountiful too, and includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a sizable 10.25-inch instrument cluster. Despite being the most basic of the roster, the i20 SE Connect does genuinely feel like a car that could stand toe to toe with the likes of the current Fiesta on the accesso- ries front – something that maybe wasn’t so true of its 2015 forerun- ner. A further browse through the standard equipment list brings up cruise control with speed lim- iter function, a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, rear parking sensors with rear view camera and electrically adjustable and heated wing mirrors. And that’s just for starters. Break the £20k barrier and the Hyundai i20 range goes premium. In its own modest words, mid-range i20 Premium models throw in 17-inch alloys, LED headlights and taillights, front fog lamps and all- round privacy glass. And remem- ber that 8-inch touchscreen? Well you can have an expanded 10.25- inch version on Premium-spec models if that’s your poison. You may have by now spotted a theme developing here. Nothing quite characterises the new i20’s decisive shift upmarket more than its brand-new Ultimate trim. Available from £22,095, the show- piece of the line-up adds a two tone roof as standard plus keyless entry, an engine start/stop button as well as a neat wireless mobile charging pad. Oh, and did we men- tion the banging Bose Premium sound system? It’s the first time the Korean brand has got its paws this level of high-end audio equipment. So in terms of tech, the revi- talised i20 may have just about

earned its inflated asking price; but what about power? Well, it’s an all-hybrid affair with every trim level being accompa- nied under the bonnet by a 1.0- litre turbo GDi engine, aided and abetted by a 48v electric motor. The numbers work out at 99bhp altogether with a healthy dose of 127lb-ft torque to keep you ticking over. You can shift through the gears via an “intelligent” six-speed manual that disengages the trans- mission from the engine when you take your foot off the gas. Otherwise, you can always plump for the optional seven-speed dual clutch version. As with the interior and exterior kit, safety tech depends chiefly on which trim level you opt for. Still, the entry-level SE Connect package can count on Forward Collision Alert, Driver Attention Alert, Intelligent Speed Limit Warning and Lane Keep Assist Lane. Stepping up to Premium trim expands the i20’s armoury further with Follow Assist, while both Blind-spot Collision Warning and Forward Collision Assist are the preserve of i20 Ultimate variants. The trio of launch versions will be joined by the new N-Line and N models early next year. While the former glams up the i20 with some sporty add-ons and a smat- tering of mechanical upgrades, the latter will be a full-blown road-go- ing version of the car which swept to the World Rally Championship constructors title last year. It’s a mouth-watering prospect, and one which looks set to send a shiver down the spines of the Peugeot 208 GTi, Volkswagen Polo GTI and Ford Fiesta ST alike. We will of course bring you that news as soon as it drops in our inbox, but in the meantime, the 2021 Hyundai i20 range is available to order right now from £18,595. 

One of the myriad impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on the motoring industry has been the utter disar- ray into which global releases have been catapulted. Back in March, we were gearing up to bombard you with the annual cavalcade of juicy new models and concepts lined up at Europe’s premiere motoring extravaganza. Of course, a certain unhappy event put paid to the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, leaving us in a particularly barren spell indeed, at least as far as fresh news was concerned. While the world is hardly back in fine fettle right now, many of this year’s most anticipated releases are finally making their belated debuts on UK soil. One such piv- otal Asian newcomer was set to be the third generation Hyundai i20 and its rally-bred gravel-chewing alter ego the i20 N. Well, it’s been an eight-month delay, but at long last the Korean hatchback is ready to rumble. Now, let’s not kid ourselves here, the supermini market is an uncom- fortably crowded arena where reputation is everything. The Ford Fiesta has been the de facto ruler of this realm since what seems like time immemorial. However, the arrival of steadily more tempting Asian alternatives in recent years has gradually closed the gap on the old stager. Chief among these is the i20, which returns with a much more contemporary look and continu- ous to merrily escalate the equip- ment arms race. Still very much emphasising the ‘mini’ in supermini, Hyundai’s
