READERS FROM THE FOREST AND BEYOND TOLD US WHY THEIR NEW FOREST PONIES ARE SO SPECIAL…

PHOTO: Audrey Scott-Hopkins

Rowdown Miniature or “Mad Mini” as we all know her was born on the Forest, bred by our local agister Mike Lovell. She joined our family when she was four years old and my son Peter was eight. Peter is severely deaf which affected his balance, but Mini certainly made him the quiet, confident horseman he now is. In no way is she a typical child’s pony - at 11.2hh she’s a pocket rocket with bags of character which endears her to everyone that knows her. Her breed show record is amazing, winning trophies for showing, jumping and gymkhana. In 2006, my friend and I were having a particular ROWDOWN MINIATURE abandoned a rather young Peter to cope alone in a very big class. When we walked past the line-up we noticed he was on the end of the line, but we had looked at wrong end and Mini was in fact first against some amazing ponies! At Mopley Riding Club she is a legend, winning many of the trophies and even having a cup named after her. As soon as Peter was old enough, he competed in the point-to-point, in which she was placed several times despite her size. She became a really good little drift pony, regularly taking part in the round-ups, being particularly useful in low trees! She is a true pony of a lifetime, family friend and bad year coming last in everything. We had

I LOVE MY NEW FOREST PONY BECAUSE… New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society secretary Jane Murray introduces our piece with her perspective on the New Forest pony… T he New Forest remains one of the largest areas of unenclosed land in southern England, checks and remove surplus animals, many of which are the foals that are sold at Beaulieu Road Sales. They are easily transformed from their wild and woolly state to quality riding ponies. The New Forest pony is

and the ponies still roam its heaths, bogs and woodlands as they have done since time immemorial. People known as commoners privately own all ponies on the Forest, and all New Forest stallions are registered, licensed and rigorously inspected. Ponies live in a natural herd environment, learning to cope with a wide range of life experiences both natural and unnatural. Annual round-ups, or drifts are held throughout the late summer and autumn, so that owners can carry out health

renowned worldwide for its versatility, kind nature and willingness to please. They are easy to handle and quick to learn which makes them an ideal choice for any member of the family. With its native virtues of intelligence, strength and agility, the New Forest pony is a proven performance pony in many different disciplines, including dressage, eventing and show jumping.

HASELBURY ABEL

I love my eight-year-old New Forest pony Haselbury Abel – he has a great personality, is very bold, quick to learn and sociable.

New Forest ponies are so much fun to own – Abel is great with my kids and other animals. He does have his flaws, in that he can be very stubborn and likes to do what he wants most of time, but I wouldn’t be without him! Holly Wright, West Parley

My New Forest pony is Knavesash Archer. He was bred by Kate Robb in Burley, out of her mare Sunnydale Delight, by Diana Van Hennik’s stallion Buckland Cruiser. Archie will be 13 years old this June, and I have owned him since he was five. I mainly do affiliated dressage, and have started doing Advanced classes this year. Archie has qualified for the regionals at Novice, Medium and Knavesash Archer

Advanced Medium, and came eighth in the medium regionals. He also has all his dressage gradings with the breed society. This year it’s all about wearing top hat and tails, and I am now hoping to improve our scores at Advanced by putting in a lot of hard work! Foresters are fantastic – they are happy to live in or out, are hardy, have excellent feet, are cheap to keep and willing to try their hardest in any and every sphere. I couldn’t recommend a Forester enough! Adele Etheridge, Ashley

helped make Peter the confident per-son and horse-man he is today.

My 10-year-old daughter Gemma loves her New Forest pony Haywards Loyal William. William was bred by my parents Mandy and Peter Pidgley at the Haywards Stud in Boldre, and Gem was only three when they first met. My parents gave him to her for her eighth birthday and since then they HAYWARDS LOYAL WILLIAM

have done everything, from in-hand and ridden showing, to cross country, dressage and showjumping, plus some fun rides and fancy dress along the way! They have an incredible bond and are totally fearless together, much to

our horror! Gemma plans to do the point-to- point in the future, as well as more jumping and other things to keep my nerves in shreds! Sally Marsh, Boldre

HILLTOP BEAUTY

I have owned our 13hh pony Hilltop

For a few years she turned her hoof to New Forest Driving for the Disabled, which both her passengers and I thoroughly enjoyed. Whatever you ask of Beauty, she will give you 100% in the cheeky manner that she has - it has been and honour and privilege to own such a versatile breed. Tracy Rooke, Hordle

Burley Eclipse

Beauty for 16 years – she is now a young 26 years old. During our time together, she has given me the ability to experience numerous equestrian activities including show jumping, cross-country, driving, showjumping and general hacking. Even after all this time she still continues to put a smile on my face!

Where do I start? My New Forest pony Burley Eclipse is one in a million. We’ve had our ups and downs, including a few bruises here and there, but Mary has taught me everything I know. With our first drifting season I spent more time on the ground than I did on horseback, but through sheer determination Mary and I stuck with it and eventually we were awarded ‘The Most Promising Colt Hunter’ cup. Mary has never let me down - from drifting, hunting, racing in the New Forest point-to-point, to just happy hacking, I always end up with a smile on my face! There have been many what I call, ‘shut your eyes and hold your breath’ moments while galloping flat out chasing a colt on extremely rough terrain, but Mary makes sure I get back to the pound in one piece! Mary has always been the leader and nothing stops her leading the way through a bog or over fallen trees, she just goes for it! At the age of 18, she is taking life a little easier now, but there’s no pony like her. Daisy Slocombe, Lymington

TANDY

I have dyslexia and previously I was very shy and unconfident, but my New Forest pony has changed that. He is the best because even at the amazing age of 24, he still acts like a youngster and he will always give you 100% of what you are asking of him. When I first got Tandy, I had ridden just a few times and I had never even jumped before! Within a month of loaning him, I did my first ever show and came 6th in the 50cm class. From there on he taught me how to ride and now we are flying round and winning 70cm. He has taken nine people out hunting for the first time and he absolutely loves it. At least once in every course of show jumps that we do, we have to have a motorbike turn (he is well- known for them!). One year on and I cannot thank this one-in-a-million boy enough. He has taught me absolutely loads, not just about riding, but he has also changed me in the classroom! He has turned our world upside down and I don’t know what I would do without him. Isabel Weidmann (13), Chandler’s Ford

Endymion Storm is a pony of a lifetime who turns his hoof to anything! Owned and bred by Steve Lee he’s given me my first taste of the New Forest point-to-point in 2017, which was the experience of a lifetime We are aiming at a second run in 2018 – for me it’s a unique race, even after riding racehorses for much of my life, because you know the vicinity of the race but you have no idea of your route and you only find out the start location on Christmas Day. The finish is for you to find, which means you really work on your knowledge of the Forest. Storm has hunted with a young child on his back and jumped some huge hedges, always making sure his little passenger is ok. A New Forest pony is a pony in a million - there’s different shapes, sizes and colours for all and no matter how young or old you are, there’s one out there for you. They will never cease to make you smile! Charlotte Springall, Landford

How to keep your trailer on the road

KEY CHECKS BEFORE USING YOUR TRAILER

Tow bar and connections Check:  The trailer is correctly coupled to the tow ball or pin — follow the manufacturer’s advice  The coupling height is correct  The 7 or 13 core cable and plug isn’t damaged  The vehicle’s tow bar is in good order.

Lights and indicators Make sure that there’s no damage to the lights and lighting plugs, and that they’re all working correctly and clean. You might need to enlist the help of a friend for this.

Load and weight limit Check:  The trailer isn’t overloaded  The load is distributed as evenly as possible.  The vehicle manufacturer’s plate gives

information about weight limits for your vehicle. Check the vehicle’s handbook or contact the manufacturer if a plate isn’t tted.

We spoke to Tim Smales from New Forest Farm Machinery and got his team’s top tips for keeping your trailer in good working order during the busy summer show season… A well maintained horsebox will give you years of trouble- free service. Although giving your trailer regular checks and maintenance won’t replace the need for an annual professional service, it certainly will highlight any issues with the trailer and improve the safety for you, your animals and other road users.

Breakaway cable Use a breakaway cable or secondary coupling. This engages the trailer’s brakes (if tted) or stops the trailer if it becomes detached from the towing vehicle. Check:  The cable isn’t worn or damaged  There’s enough slack in the cable so that it doesn’t accidentally apply the brakes  The cable won’t drag on the ground when you’re driving  Follow the manufacturer’s advice to make sure it is connected correctly. There should be an area to attach the cable to the towing vehicle, looping the cable over the hitch is not acceptable as it can easily fall off or if the tow bar failed, the trailer brakes wouldn’t engage.

Before you go Before setting off, always perform one last check around the trailer to ensure all latches are secure, the jockey wheel is up and secured, the braking cable is secure, the hitch is on and located properly, and the lighting socket is connected. It’s also very important to always double check fasteners on the ramp doors.

Here are some important maintenance checks and

recommendations that you’ll be able to perform on your trailer to help ensure the safety of towing and keep it in great working order.

After using your horsebox When you’ve nished using your trailer, always muck it out and give it a good wash, if possible leaving the ramps and doors open to allow the trailer to fully dry out. Never store the trailer with damp bedding material left inside. It’s also good practice to clean the outside too, particularly if the roads have been salted. Your trailer is best stored on hard standing under cover with the handbrake left off. If the storage site is on a slope, use wheel chocks rather than the handbrake. Inspect the trailer and turn the wheels to avoid the risk of at spots on the tyres when storing for long periods of time. It’s also worth checking your trailer lighting plug, cleaning it with a penetrating oil, such as WD40. When storing the trailer, ensure the lighting socket is kept dry to prevent corrosion and water ingress.

Wheels and tyres Check that the tyres on both the car and trailer:  Don’t have any cuts or bulges  Are in ated to the manufacturer’s speci cation for the load being carried  Have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm across the central

three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre.

 Wheel nuts and bolts are tightened to the correct torque.  It’s also important to check your spare tyre.

Service Recommendations For trailers that receive heavy, daily use it is recommended that a service is carried out once every six months or so. Where trailers receive less frequent or prolonged use, an annual service is usually suf cient.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS FOR LOCAL RIDERS NEW Forest Riding Club members scooped an array of prizes at the British Riding Club’s Winter Novice championships in Lincolnshire. The senior dressage team of Kerry Tyrell, Sonia Cutler, Gail Meaker and Claire Lewis came 7th, with Claire taking an individual 4th placing as well. Meanwhile, the junior team of Callum Robertson, Matteo Lallo, Ella Conway and Eleanor Jenkins took 8th place, and Ella gained a 4th placing as an individual. This is the latest in a series of recent successes for the NFRC dressage teams, which have gone from strength to strength in recent years. Junior team manager Amy Robbins said: “The two junior teams and individuals headed all the way to Lincolnshire demonstrated their commitment to the club and throughout our stay, maintained focused maturity and illustrated how much they care about their horses and representing their club. “It made me proud to manage them, and all of them did the club, me and themselves proud.”

Strong turnout at spring dressage

COMPETITORS braved a wet forecast to compete at New Forest Riding Club’s spring dressage competition at Woodington Training Centre. Ruby Hart and Ashley Sultan won the Intro class on 65.2%, while NFRC member Jane Keats took the honours in Prelim 1 with Rowdown High Tide. The pairs’ class attracted

“Interestingly it was the Novice, Elementary and Medium classes that had more interest than the usual Introductory and Preliminary classes. “Our pairs class is always well supported and great fun to compete in and watch.” The club’s next open competition is on October 7th at Woodington Training Centre.

NFRC team member Kerry Tyrell won the Novice Open on Himoon Spellbound, while Kelly Jensen came first in the ‘pick your own’ on 72.5%. Organiser Anne Pearce told the A&T : “Due to the unpredictable weather, we were a bit worried about entries, but luck was with us and we had a full day’s dressage.

strong entries and hilarity all round, and was eventually won by Callum Robertson and Immy Reynolds with an impressive 77.82%. 24 competitors fought it out in the Prelim 14 class, which was won by club member Janet Sheen on O’Riley, who went on to win the Novice Restricted class as well.

Jo and Giles were featured on Meridian television last Friday and voting is open until Monday 30th April. To support their bid for The People’s Project grant, go to www. thepeoplesprojects. org.uk/projects/ view/whispering-

New Forest pony therapy for elderly residents

AN INNOVATIVE project to help dementia sufferers benefit from interaction with horses is bidding for regional funding. The Whispering Horses project centres on New Forest pony Tippy, who has been used as an equine therapy horse at the Isle of Wight-based Bodster Centre. Run by Giles and Jo Boddington, who used to work at the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy in Bransgore, the centre assists people from a range of

backgrounds to gain confidence and skills through interacting with horses. The couple have helped people with learning difficulties, mental health problems and low self-esteem, as well as jobseekers and school children. Now they want to take Tippy – who is by well-known New Forest pony stallion Lovelyhill Uplift – into nursing homes, and are hoping for a National Lottery grant from ITV’s The People’s Project to achieve their aim. Giles told the A&T: “We want to help elderly people experience the joy of

being around Tippy, and also bring school children along with us to make it a truly inter-generational experience. “At the moment, we don’t have a horsebox which makes us entirely reliant on borrowing one to get to the homes, which is not ideal. “A grant from The People’s Project would enable us to buy a horsebox, and also fund other aspects of the scheme, including the purchase of Polaroid cameras, so we can give the elderly people an immediate souvenir of the occasion.”

Giles and Jo have found Tippy to be the ideal pony for the project: “New Forest ponies are very calm and solid. They have lovely temperaments and this works really well for what we’re doing. “Tippy was born on Crabbswood Lane in Sway, and her mother was a proper Forest-bred pony by Peveril Peterborough. “We’ve used natural horsemanship techniques with her, mirroring what ponies experience in the wild.”

The pair took 7th place in the Medium Silver Area Festival Final, in a hotly-contested class of 25 competitors. Owned by Alyson Hall, Medburn Singer didn’t make the grade to be a racehorse, but has successfully turned his hoof to dressage. Fiona said: “It was well worth the very early start to come 7th – a stupid mistake in the walk to canter cost us a bit, but still top 10 so can’t complain too much! “I’m so grateful to Alyson Hall – I love her horse!”

PRODUCT REVIEWS We asked Mandy Rowse from Weston’s Animal Feeds in Sway and Reg Chester-Sterne from Norris and Sons to pick out their top products for the summer ahead.

NORRIS AND SONS NEW FOREST PONY FEED

Reg says: “Norris and Sons New Forest pony cubes or mix provide an economic alternative to well-known brands. “Our own New Forest pony cubes are obtained locally from the mill in Fordingbridge. “They are designed for all horses and ponies with medium energy requirements, containing trace elements, oils, fats, bre and protein that your animal needs to support long-term health. It also has added

LEOVET POWER PHASER DURATIV FLY REPELLENT

Mandy says: “ This y repellent gel gives absolute protection for sensitive parts of your horse or pony’s body.

vitamins to support the immune system. “For those who prefer, we also do our own New Forest pony mix with similar contents.”

OUR REVIEW This strong, highly- concentrated gel is really easy to apply to those areas that are hard to reach with a spray and are particularly sensitive, such as under the tummy and between the back legs. I used it this week on my New Forest pony as we headed out for a hack and while he was dgeting under his belly before we set out, once applied, he soon settled and it really did seem to work. I will be interested to keep trying it out over the coming summer show season.

“It is very popular with horses that are bad with crab ies and don’t like sprays. The sponge allows you to target speci c areas easily.”

OUR REVIEW I like the idea of a locally- sourced feed that supports local businesses and is better for the environment. We tried out both the cubes and mix on our ponies and found that over a period with very little grass growth, they did well on the feed. Particularly given how economical this brand is, I would de nitely recommend it.

SUMMER WEIGHT CONTROL

Obesity in horses is a serious problem, as nearly 30% of the population are obese. A pony can eat up to 5% of their bodyweight daily as grass, which is approximately three times the daily recommended intake! Restricting pasture access is an obvious way of reducing calorie intake, and owners have several options: • 24/7 stabling with controlled feeding - however this is often not possible either because of lack of facilities, temperament, dust allergies, and it also restricts natural exercise. • Partial stabling – but horses soon recognise a pattern andwhen access to pasture is restricted to only three hours, they can still consume 40- 60% of their daily intake. Also this pattern tends to promote a binge and starve cycle which has potential gastric implications. • Restricting grass intake – either by area or the use of a grazing muzzle GRAZING MUZZLES These can reduce pasture intake by as much as 80%, but it is important that owners know how to use them effectively and safely. Total exclusion muzzles should not be routinely used and flexible muzzles are better than rigid ones. Correctly fitting your horse’s muzzle is very important. They should be wide enough to fit comfortably, leaving a gap of ½ inch to an inch around the edge to allow for movement of the jaw. The horse should be given time to adapt to its muzzle, initially only placing it on for short periods under supervision. For horses that have free access to pasture and are not currently significantly overweight, but have a tendency to put on weight, put the muzzle on during the day and remove at night. For very overweight horses, the muzzle should be used whilst out at pasture, thus allowing free exercise. But the horse then needs to be kept stabled or in a “starvation area” and fed suitable forage with the muzzle having been removed. Remember that dietary intake is only part of a weight management program, and that exercise (when appropriate) is the major consideration.

SUMMER VET TIPS As the warmer weather approaches, we asked local equine vets for their advice to keep your horse healthy and well this summer.

GILLES MOFFAT FROM SEADOWN VETERINARY PRACTICE IN HYTHE GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON SWEET ITCH, SUMMER WEIGHT CONTROL AND FOALING…

Sweet Itch

Sweet itch is an allergic reaction to bites from midges, but it also occurs with bites from black flies, horn flies, and stable flies. The allergic reaction causes an itching sensation in the skin, and the horse bites, rubs and scratches the affected areas leading to hair loss, especially from the mane and tail, with crusting and scab formation. The condition usually occurs over the summer period and can get worse each year.

• Try and keep your horse away from areas where the flies or midges breed such as muck heaps or stagnant water. • The use of fine mesh screens for stable openings and the use of box fans in stables can help. • When avoidance is not possible, short-term use of steroids or antihistamines may be used to alleviate itching. • Allergen-specific-immunotherapy is another option, with 50-75% reported success rate, but a response can take several months so year-round treatment is recommended.

Treatment: Prevention is key when dealing with sweet itch – here’s some advice for managing the condition: • Fly control should begin before the start of the fly season and exposure to insects should be limited. • Application of insect repellent and stabling during dusk and dawn will help reduce exposure. • Fly rugs and masks should be used when your horse is not stabled.

FOALING Foaling can be a very violent and rapid process, and it is important to recognise the abnormal situation and seek veterinary assistance very quickly if the foal and mare are to survive when things go wrong.

KEY TIMINGS • The front feet should appear within 10 minutes of the waters breaking, and they should be facing downwards i.e. solar surface to the floor. • Within 10 minutes of the feet appearing, a nose should appear. ONCE THE FOAL IS BORN THERE IS AN EASY 1, 2, 3 RULE • Within 1 hour: the foal should successfully stand, and remember to check the mare has milk • Within 2 hours: the foal should be nursing • Within 3 hours: the foal should have passed meconium and urine

If things do not seem to be normal, it is vital to ring the vet. Mares should be monitored carefully in the first 24 hours to ensure that there is a good bond forming between the mother and foal, and there are no signs of lethargy, discomfort, colic or depressed appetite in the mare. It is vital that a foal receives adequate amounts of colostrum (the thick, yellow initial milk) during the first few hours after birth. Pony foals require approximately two litres in the first 12 hours. This colostrum is very rich in maternal antibodies, and is essential in providing passive immunity to the foal. It is recommended you have the mare and foal checked by your vet within the first 24 hours.

Laminitis

Alan Hough from Celtic Equine Vets takes us through the risks

laminitis by means of a very high blood insulin level, especially following high sugar foods. Therefore management changes are needed to ensure that this risk is minimised, which include: • Limiting grass and cereal feeds • Regular monitoring by means of a blood test in horses that are overweight or over the age of 15 years for Cushing’s and EMS • Increasing exercise • Using medication if and where required

Laminitis is always a hot topic at this time of year. This condition is an inflammation of the laminae within the hoof capsule and it can vary in severity from the merest hint of lameness to a situation described as ‘sinking’, which can be fatal. There are three recognised causes: • Hormonal diseases such as Cushing’s • Equine Metabolic Disease • Trauma and toxic insult from infections Up to 90% of cases of laminitis are caused by either Equine Metabolic Disease (EMS) or Cushing’s (PPID). Both Cushing’s and EMS cause

of equine metabolic syndrome and laminitis…

Equine Metabolic Syndrome is where the horse loses its ability to correctly control its insulin levels. Both genetic and environmental risk factors interact in an individual horse. Environmental factors such as very lush pastures and high concentrate diets, or even just over feeding of fibre-based diets, promote obesity in a genetically-susceptible horse, culminating in very high insulin levels as a result of insulin resistance. Diagnosis is via a blood test, and treatment requires a strict weight-loss program. Preventing EMS revolves around detecting and reducing risk factors of an individual horse becoming overweight.

“Our 4 year old thouroughbred Harry severed his artery in his front leg.Within 10 minutes of calling the practice Gillies Moffat arrived. This horse is incredibly needle shy and very sharp (not helpful when he’s 17hh). Gillies quickly and safely sedated the horse. He managed to put a stitch in the artery and wrap the leg, He then helped us load the horse to transport to Liphook.... Gillies’s quiet nature, skill and professional attitude was faultless. I cannot recommend the equine practice enough.
