Rider fitness – getting yourself into shape for the summer
Most riders would acknowledge that they’re not quite as fit as they might like, and that their riding would be improved by strengthening certain areas.
What’s the problem?
But where to start? on rider tness and strength, we speak to Clare Howard from The Balanced Rider. Based near Southampton, In this special feature focusing
A common reason people come to us is that they think there is something wrong with their body that is stopping them from riding well. Whether this is a stiff hip, a bad back, an old shoulder injury, or whether their instructor has noticed they appear to sit wonky when they ride. Occasional injury is an inevitable part of owning and riding horses, and it is often the looking after horses rather than riding them that causes the most problems e.g. mucking out, lifting feed sacks and haynets etc. Biomechanics is quite fashionable at the moment, but it is just a simple word used to describe how we use our anatomy when we move. We all have different movement patterns, some are common to most people, and some are unique to each of us. Some are useful for riding and some can hinder what we are aiming to achieve. I tend not to think of these as faults, rather they are our idiosyncrasies. We should embrace the ones which are useful, improve on the ones that can be changed and learn to accept and work around the ones which can’t be changed. This is important because what we do for the 23 hours a day we are not riding will directly affect how we sit for the hour we ride each day. If you sit slumped in an of ce chair all day, followed by rushing around after the kids and nally collapsing into the sofa, you are not going to miraculously sit like Charlotte Dujardin for the hour you ride your horse. Luckily, there are some easy exercises you can each day to help train the correct posture, strength and control for your riding.
the team at The Balanced Rider specialises in physiotherapy,
biomechanics and symmetry for horse riders.
They work with clients one-to-
one and also run clinics for groups, including monthly sessions in Sway and West Wellow. Here Clare gives us her thoughts on what riders can do to get t and improve…
Top tips for improving your riding position
First things rst, it’s important that you are careful when trying these exercises and make sure you are in a safe area. Always check with your medical professional before starting exercise for the rst time. If you feel you need one-to-one input, look for a chartered physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor who has some knowledge of horse riders. We prefer to assess the rider off the horse rst, then we can identify how the rider in uences the horse and vice versa. At a later date, it is always useful to do a ridden assessment to see how the horse and rider work together.

USE A WOBBLE BOARD
TIP 1
TIP 2 FIND A CLASS
If you struggle to do exercise on your own it can be useful to nd a local exercise or pilates class, especially one that is aimed speci cally towards riders.
Not only will it help with your motivation, but it will also give you the chance to ask questions and get checked over by an instructor.
Balance and symmetry are an important part of riding. They improve our marks in dressage tests, increase the speed and accuracy at showjumping, and are essential for the welfare of our horse. Here, Ethan is working on his jumping posture and aiming for good alignment. By standing on a wobble board, he is improving his balance as he moves from a riding position to jumping position. This exercise will help you if you tend to put more weight in one stirrup as you move between positions.
TIP 3 GET A GYM BALL
Gym balls are an excellent piece of exercise equipment for horse riders. They encourage you to use you core and balance muscles, rather than your brute strength muscles. Darren (pictured below) is doing a superman over the ball, aiming for a good ear, shoulder, hip, heel line;
smoothly changing diagonals with his arm-legs. The more dif cult progression for this exercise is kneeling on the gym ball and then doing the superman – only when you are in a safe environment and ideally with supervision.

FULL RESULTS Dale Memorial Cup overall Champion and Nancy Deed Cup (Mike Lovell’s area): Foxhills Tinkerbelle (Mrs Pat Dunning) Reserve Champion and Olga Golby Cup (Peter Rix’s area): Howen Level Flight (Mr Eric Dovey and Julia Barrett)
This year’s New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society’s Forest- fed competition saw strong entries, despite a year of turbulent weather.
The Dale Memorial Cup for the overall champion went to Pat Dunning’s Foxhills Tinkerbelle, a bay mare by Skywalker, out of Foxhills Total Eclipse. The reserve award went to Eric Dovey and Julia Barrett’s Howen Level Flight. The competition recognises Forest-run mares in good condition who spend 11
months of the year running the open Forest, and also takes into account con rmation and type. Breed society chair Suzanne Kempe told A&T: “The judges found most ponies looking very well, especially some of the mares that were also obviously in-foal. The overall standard was very good.”
Keppel Pulteny Cup (Best Young Commoner’s mare): Ruby Xii (Mr Daniel Drodge) Broxmore Cup (Best maiden mare): Deerleap Foxlove (Mrs Marion Ingram)
Pinkney Cup (Best mare that foaled in the previous year): Foxhills Footloose (Mrs Pat Dunning) Golding Cup (Best mare north of the A31): Rushmoor Dragon y (Messrs R&J Stride)
Peckham Cup (Robert Maton’s area): Foxhills Hazelnut (Mrs Clare Bates) Bessant Cup (Andrew Napthine’s area): Miss E Stride and Mrs Charlotte Lines
Horse of the month
More national success for NRFC teams
Organiser Andrea Dymott told the A&T that the event was back by popular demand: “My husband and I decided to stop running the show in 2000 – I was in need of a hip replacement and decided I couldn’t do it anymore. “But we hadn’t appreciated how well-liked the show was, and every year I’ve been badgered to bring it back. Everybody is so delighted that we’re doing it again and it’s gone from there really.” Hosted on Mr and Mrs Hulse’s Breamore Estate on June 30th, the event will feature 94 classes spread over seven rings. This revival of the show will be in aid of the Sarah Kinsley Fund, a local charity that helps provide services and equipment to sick and injured children who cannot be helped by the NHS. Examples of the help they provide includes specialist wheelchairs and driving lessons for parents to take their children to hospital appointments. The show is still open to anyone who would be interested in offering sponsorship, as well as volunteers to help on the day. Anyone interested in getting in involved should email Andrea Dymott – andreadymott@hotmail.com. The schedule is out now and can be downloaded from www.nfed.co.uk

The end of March saw New Forest Riding Club make a winning visit to the British Riding Clubs Novice Winter Championships in Lincolnshire.
The junior team (pictured) of Imogen Reynolds, Eleanor Jenkins, Matteo Lallo and Callum Robertson won the Novice Dressage competition on a team score of 9. Matteo Lallo also won the Grassroots Intro class on Morrigan Bernardino. Individual senior Kerry Tyrell and Himoons Spellbound won the overall Novice competition, while the team came fth. Teams from NFRC and the New Forest Pony Enthusiast’s Club will be heading up to the Intermediate Winter Championships at Bury Farm this weekend, with teams entered in both dressage and show jumping sections.
This is our rehab pony Ebony who sadly had 8 owners before she was 6 because she was “quirky”. My daughter fell in love with her instantly and they are a match made in heaven — their bond is phenomenal. Amelia has cerebral palsy and kidney failure and Ebony has literally been her rock and helped her get through every day, which has been really tough. Together they have won show accumulators, and recently come second in their rst ever para dressage test. nominates her family’s pony Ebony…
Everybody is so delighted that we’re doing it again.

Beach riding in and around the New Forest
W hen it comes to hacking, New Forest riders are arguably spoilt for choice, with miles and miles of uninterrupted national park to explore. But if you fancy hitting the shoreline and trying something a bit different, you can’t beat a beach ride. Not only is cantering along the sand a thrill in itself, but it’s a great fitness exercise for your horse. So where to go? We take a look at your options and give you our top tips for beach riding this summer!
11
EQUESTRIAN ∙ Spring/Summer 2019
Highcliffe Beach
Milford, Hordle Cliffs and Calshot beaches There are no restrictions when it comes to riding on these beaches, but the stones and shingle make them a less popular choice with riders.
Undoubtedly the most popular with local riders, Highcliffe Beach has it all — picture-perfect sand, beautiful scenery and good parking. Riders are only permitted on the beach before 10am and after 9pm from Easter weekend to September 30th, so you’ll need to get up early or head down late for a sunset ride. Highcliffe is a popular choice for lots of beach users, so remember to watch out for other people - the best parking is by the Cliffhanger Café.
Hayling Island
For those willing to stray a little further afield, Hayling Island near Portsmouth offers a different experience for horse and rider. Riders are permitted to use West Beachlands before 10am and after 7pm during the summer months (Good Friday to September 30th), so there’s plenty of time for a ride after work during those long sunny evenings. A word of caution – it’s possible to get caught on the sandbank when the tide comes in. Horses and riders have got into trouble on this stretch before, so always check the tide tables before venturing out.
The Isle of Wight If you’re feeling brave enough to hop on to the ferry, you’ll be handsomely rewarded as most of the beaches on the Island permit
Top tips for introducing your horse to the beach If your horse or pony has never been to the beach before, the new experiences of water and sand may be a bit daunting for them. Here’s our advice for helping ensure you have a safe and experienced horse – they can act as a guide and lead the way • Choose a time when the beach isn’t going to be busy – the last thing you want is to be negotiating swimmers and walkers with a novice horse • Go at low tide – this means that you can introduce your horse to the sea gradually • If possible, get them used to water beforehand – go paddling in streams in the Forest, or even just through a water tray on the ground at home. It all helps with the familiarisation. • Have fun – it’s an amazing experience, and here in the Forest, we’re lucky to have the best of coast and countryside! enjoyable beach ride… • Go along with a more
May 1st to September 30th. So it’s best to be sensible around other beach users, and go for your ride at the beginning or end of the day. Bembridge and St Helen’s beaches are especially popular with riders, due to the ease of access and perfect footing.
horse riding all year round. The Isle of Wight authority’s official advice is that riding is “discouraged” between 10am and 6pm on council-run beaches from
Be aware that riders are required to wear hi-visibility gear when using beaches on the Isle of Wight, and that droppings must be picked up.

EQUESTRIAN ∙ Spring/Summer 2019
We take a look behind the scenes with Hannah Buteaux , equine vet at Seadown Veterinary Services in Hythe. they have two Kune Kune pigs (Pumba and Timon, named by the children!) and some chickens. Pumba has had a skin disorder for some weeks on his face but it has been gradually healing, so this is a visit to check that no further medication is required. These pigs are very friendly and are easily examined while I feed them some pig nuts. The chickens also allow me to examine them all over, checking their feather and skin condition and advising on worming.
M Y day starts at 6am, if not earlier, when my daughter wakes and I’m up organising family breakfasts before my mum arrives at 8am to take over. I really couldn’t manage without her! Juggling life as a working mum and vet in the New Forest is a challenge but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I grew up in the area and absolutely love living and working in such a special place. Today is like any other, filled with patients of all shapes and sizes in different parts of the Forest. I am never quite sure what’s going to greet me when I arrive at a destination. I start the day at the Hythe hospital at 8.30am to treat two current equine inpatients, giving medications and updating their owners. I see that today’s diary is already pretty full — no rest for the wicked but it’s a beautiful day and our patients are always as lovely as our clients. There is nothing quite like the community in and around the Forest — but I admit I am biased!
First port of call early morning is to see Andy and Sally Davis in Totton, who have around 15 alpacas and also a small herd of Valais Blacknose Sheep. Andy has called me for a health check on his beautiful alpacas. They are a delight to work with - well handled, soft fleeced and friendly, and come in a wondrous range of exotic colours. I was pleased to be able to tell Andy that they are all fit and healthy, a credit to his husbandry and ready for the breeding season. Next onto Andy’s small flock of Valais Blacknose Sheep. It’s not an easy task to turn them to have their feet trimmed and I’m grateful to Andy for the extra muscle in rolling them over and helping restrain them while I tackle the trimming. I’m not the tallest and these sheep must weigh close to 100kg each!
Next, I head off for a call that came in this morning to see a grey pony that is having trouble walking. I arrive at the yard and sure enough, the pony is clearly in a lot of discomfort coming out of the stable. I listen carefully to the owner’s history of recent events and fully examine the friendly mare, checking her feet and taking some blood tests. I suspect laminitis and give some advice regarding treatment, but it’s good to be sure she’s responding, so I will call back in a couple of days.
My final call of the day is at a local riding school to vaccinate some New Forest ponies. They are all fit and well, and behave for their vet visit. I’m pretty tired as I head back again to the hospital to write up notes and pick up any messages, but it’s been another varied and really interesting day, out and about across some of the most beautiful parts of the Forest. I finally roll in through the front door at 6.30pm, and my husband and daughter are there to greet me. She loves animals and to hear stories from my day. I might be exhausted but it’s a real privilege to be able to describe what mummy has been doing all day. She’s only a year old but she adores our pets at home and if she seeks to follow in my footsteps when she grows up, I shall be immensely proud. Being a vet is a hard but wonderfully rewarding life!
Half an hour later, I arrive at my next visit on the edge of Lymington. It’s a nursery school where they encourage the children to take care of their own animals as well as understand about all aspects of Mother Nature and the environment. Currently,
medicine, emergency medicine and anaesthesia. I am the regional lead veterinarian for BARTA (British Animal Rescue and Trauma Association) and am also delighted to have been recently confirmed as one of the New Forest Pony Breed Society vets, joining my colleague and Seadown Director, Laura Trigg from 1st August this year.
I qualified from The Royal Veterinary College London in 2009 and following graduation I spent some time working for the equine charity SPANA at their hospital in Morocco, before joining Seadown
Veterinary Services. Working mainly with
equine and farm animals, I enjoy all aspects of equine practice with particular interests in internal

“Our 4 year old thouroughbred Harry severed his artery in his front leg.Within 10 minutes of calling the practice Gillies Moffat arrived. This horse is incredibly needle shy and very sharp (not helpful when he’s 17hh). Gillies quickly and safely sedated the horse. He managed to put a stitch in the artery and wrap the leg, He then helped us load the horse to transport to Liphook.... Gillies’s quiet nature, skill and professional attitude was faultless. I cannot recommend the equine practice enough. Every member of the team go above and beyond.Thank you Seadown.” Kerry Lemoignan, Ipley Manor LiveryYard
“We have used Seadown as our vets since 1973 and in that time Trudy Nineham and I have seen the practice develop and expand dramatically. What has not changed in that time however has been the friendly, efficient service coupled with the expertise and skills of the equine vets who are always prepared to go the extra mile to solve the various problems that we inevitably encounter on our large yard.” JamesYoung Ford Farm Stables, Brockenhurst
