In addition, Newbury Bowls Club, which was founded in 1598, is a friendly, well-established and active club situated right in the heart of the park. The season commences late April through to early October and many friendly matches are organised throughout the season, both home and away. It offers equipment and tuition to newcomers, both men and women, on Monday evenings from 6pm, for people keen to have a go. Did you know that, as well as play equipment, a Splash Park for children in the summer, a competition standard skatepark and, of course, beautiful walks along the canal, Victoria Park has a free outdoor gym which includes both cardio and resistance training equipment? Newbury Town Council refurbished the tennis courts in 2017 and they now have Lawn Tennis Association standard floodlighting. The courts can be booked from just £3 per half hour, or £36 for a whole year’s membership per household, which means you can play as much as you like throughout the year.
The floodlighting is only £1.50 per half-hour of play extra, with the lights automatically coming on once you’ve booked your court. Children and adults can sign up for lessons with our partner, the Community Tennis Association – details on the website www.newbury.gov.uk/tennis And if you’re feeling competitive, you can join your local tennis league through www.localtennisleagues.com It’s easy to book too, through the ‘Clubspark’ app on your mobile phone or via the town council website www.newbury.gov.uk/tennis

YOUNGER People With Dementia (Berkshire) is really going the extra mile in finding the right charity challenge for all tastes. From walking, running, skydiving, abseiling, swimming, cycling or golf, the choice is yours. Chair of trustees Dr Jacqueline Hussey said: “People have already started signing up for some really testing challenges, the most popular so far being the 3 Peaks Challenge and the Reading Half Marathon. “We are continually impressed by the lengths that people will go to help us make a difference to people’s lives. We couldn’t do it without them.” Dr Hussey is no stranger to challenges herself, having taken part in the London to Paris Bike Ride in 2016. She said: “It was one of the best experiences of my life, and so satisfying to reach the Eifel Tower after four days of hard cycling. “It was a truly bonding experience and I have made friends for life. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about undertaking a challenge to just go for it.” YPWD provides activity-led workshops to those diagnosed with young onset dementia. It also co-ordinates support for carers through education, access to an Admiral Nurse (the first of their kind in the country for young onset dementia) and respite. All services are free to the end user. While YPWD receives funding from local clinical commissioning groups, it also needs to raise over £100,000 per annum through grants and fundraising to enable it to continue its good work. So if you would like to make a different in 2018, why not undertake one of its amazing challenges and help improve the lives of those living with young onset dementia at the same time?
