Penalty points add up to a losing starter

The pace of Saad Atlaf struck a blow with the removal of Hogg for a stubborn 40, but the visitors could not build on the breakthrough as Graham Paskins (20) added a brisk 58 with Australian Mark Quamil, who then shared in a stand of 55 with Kirk Graham (18) that broke Falkland’s spirit. Despite a flurry of wickets, including that of Quamil for 67, Marlow were very much in control and were helped by Falkland’s poor over rate as with just nine required for victory, the home side were awarded six penalty runs, leaving Simon Carter (20 not out) and partner Batty to pick off the final three runs to see Marlow home with three wickets and an over to spare, Zafar claiming 2-25 and Atlaf 2-42. Falkland open their home programme on Saturday with the visit of last season’s runners-up Stoke Green.

Kologula duly obliged, with the latter performing the role of chief aggressor as they put on 104 before Williams departed, but with Kologula having blasted his way to 92 it seemed likely that Falkland could post a score approaching 275. Kologula’s eighth maximum brought up his maiden century off only 77 balls, but the innings ended with a whimper as the final four wickets fell for only 13, Kologula’s 108 supported by only three double figure scores as Batty conceded only 10 runs in as many overs and Imran Nawaz snapped up 5-39 to swing the game back towards the home side. Marlow survived a couple of early scares as openers Nawaz (34) and Barney Hogg put on 64 before Jenkins removed Nawaz, although pressure grew only after Zafar entered the attack and accounted for Nick Paskins after he had made 25.

FALKLAND’S Thames Valley League top flight campaign got under way with a penultimate over defeat at the Marlow side that finished immediately beneath them in last season’s table. The cloudy skies heralded a slow start by the visitors after they had been put in to bat and James Bird and Danny Williams went for single figures inside 10 overs before Jim Ettridge joined Paul Jenkins and the pair wasted no time in making 64 in the same time before Mark Dozell made the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Ettridge for 27. Six balls later, Falkland were in dire straits when Jeremy Batty removed Jenkins for 39 and they were soon celebrating the running out of Khalid Zafar to leave Falkland on 133-5 and in desperate need of a big partnership. KINGSCLERE got off to the best of starts with a maximum points return from their 194-run win at Bishops Waltham III in the Hampshire League’s Regional One North East. The visitors lost an early wicket but were soon rolling with Ross Andrews clearing the boundary six times in his powerful 69 and being supported all down the line by Steve Hanney (15) and Terry Kreysa (19). Mark Hurst picked up the mantle with a solid 67 and with Freddie Gee thrashing 60, a substantial innings was built, Chris Hanney chipping in a useful 36 and Jack Grove-White remaining unbeaten on 12 as Kingsclere posted an imposing 316-2. The home side made a rapid start but Gee's introduction to the attack saw him take 3-17 to turn the game ’Clere’s way and when Chris Hanney removed Sammons for 43 for the first of his two wicket, the game was effectively over. Aiden Ferris took 2-11 and Phil Gregory 2-8 in mopping up the tail as Bishops were dismissed for 122. THAMES VALLEY LEAGUE: Thatcham II had to be content with a draw when they entertained Stoke Green II in Division Four B. The visitors were steered to 298-6 in the maximum 52 overs as Pavindar Bhachu (120) and Gully Khan (69) cut loose, and after Kieran Lynch (29), Rhys Williams (47) and notable Ben Copeman (79) had departed, Thatcham were left playing out time to reach 179-5. p FALKLAND III settled for a draw in their Division Five B trip to Boyne Hill II. Robert Morgan and Leo Bangs made 60 and 59 respectively as the home side reached 233-9, while Sunil Sharma’s 88 was Falkland’s main response as they go to 188-9 in response, Jay Lloyd tying down the rest with his 6-79 return form 22 overs. p PURLEY II’s Division Six B game with Sonning II ended in a draw after Pete Rackley (38) and Chris Priestley (44) led them to 179-9 in reply to the visitors’ 228-7, built around Dan le Marquand’s 87. Draws all the way

figures as Newbury went into the final eight overs needing 82 to win. Skipper Kevin Mills hit out with four boundaries in his 30, but the task of finding 27 runs off 13 deliveries proved too great and survival chances were ended as Jackson claimed a late treble to finish with 5-50, Allen claiming 3-60 and Arjun Mathur 2-48 as Newbury were all out for 209 with one ball to spare. p Newbury II romped to a 154 run win in their Division Seven A opener away to Eversley III. Skipper John Duncan chose to bat first and his side answered the call with openers Simon Digweed (79) and Mike Beaumont (40) set a pace followed down the order by Sean Wilson (28), Amit Agrawal (32) and James Worsley (20 not out) as Newbury posted 232-5 before declaring in the 47th over. Matt Smith soon bagged a wicket when Eversley responded, and he went on to take 6-18 in 13 devastating overs. Trystan Williams claimed 2-16 and Austin Keep and Emily Cunningham a wicket apiece as Newbury shot out the home side for 78 inside 33 overs.

NEWBURY’S bid to go one better than last season’s third place in Division Three A of the Thames Valley League did not go according to plan at the start of the new campaign. They went down by 27 runs to Purley at Northcroft to give the visi- tors a good start to their campaign after a win built upon Amit Rawal’s century. Purley skipper Patrick Allen opted to bat first, although his side struggled to get going against a Newbury attack in which Rajeev Hanabe made an early impression. He claimed Allen’s wicket for a dozen and George Wheeler for 10 in a nine over stint that yielded 2-17, and although James Denton made 35, two more wickets fell before Rawal was joined by Andrew Jackson to take charge. They sent the total soaring to 236-5 with Rawal 116 not out after the 52 overs and Jackson on 44, giving Newbury 48 overs to turn it around. The early loss of Mark Hughes was no help but Charlie Anstey and Cricket
