sumptuous mid-19th-century costumes features some of Verdi’s most evocative music, including the Brindisi (the drinking song) – one of the best-known melodies in opera. Alfredo has fallen head-over-heels in love with the courtesan Violetta, but his father Germont disapproves of the fallen woman. Penniless and fearing she will soon die, Violetta agrees to leave Alfredo, believing it’s in his best interests. It is only when Germont hears that she is on her deathbed that he realises the error of his ways, and confesses all to Alfredo. But is it too late? Sung in Italian, with English surtitles. An evening at the WNO is truly magical, give it a go – with ticket prices starting at £15 it won’t break the bank.
