A Corgi Toys 261 James Bond’s Aston Martin
N ostalgia – that longing for an emotionally-powerful period in your life: seeing toys similar to those you used to play with is what triggers those sentimental feelings. One of my fondest memories is playing for hours on end with my plastic Star Wars figures on and around a fort that my grandfather made for me. There is an unbridled sense of joy and innocence that you have as a child – and the nostalgia for those days gone by is often the reason that people start collecting toys. My favourite toys, aside from my Star Wars figures, was my Rubik’s Cube and my Duncan Yo-Yo. You should have seen my tricks. I could ‘walk the dog’, do ‘around the world’ and even ‘rock the baby’. You name it, I could do it. Much like the toys in Toy Story , who feel sad and unwanted
when rejected by their owners, the affection floods back when people collect toys, yearning to buy back a piece of their childhood. Whatever your era – there is a plethora of toys to collect. So, let’s press rewind and see what is hot in the toy market right now and the type of collectors buying them. To have longevity, a toy or brand has to span generations. The greater the quality of the items the better – there will always be Disney collectors for example. But beware. Modern dolls, toys and teddy bears that are made as collectors items have less auction value than those that were made for children. This is because a childhood toy is less likely to survive, especially in good condition, therefore adding to its rarity.
