mans relationship with dogs and I was hooked. The bond between humans and their dogs went far deeper than I could ever have imagined. The most challenging thing about animal photography is making sure my lighting set up is correct for each individual shoot. Each animal will have a slightly different colour and texture and my lighting set up is adjusted accordingly. My love of photography began as a young child because my Grandfather was a keen amateur photographer and I was intrigued by a his cameras and lenses. The way he was able to freeze our family memories and places fascinated me. I remember his first digital camera - that was really exciting as you could see the images immediately rather than sending off negatives. My family have always had animals, dogs horses and cats so during my second year at University I chose to do a project focusing on

amazing to work with a pet food or toy manufacturer. Above all I want to make a name for myself for producing high quality technically correct images whilst making the experience fun for both animal and owner. I love that no two shoots are the same and enjoy hearing from the owners about their pets. Each animal is different and for me the challenge is capturing their unique personality in the images I produce.

In the course of my work I have met lots of different breeds of dog including a number of rescue dogs and a Romanian street dog. I can honestly say I don’t have a favourite, although as a family we have always had Labradors and I would not be without a dog. At my studio I have yet to photograph any reptiles. I think it would be a challenge but could make a great picture - as always the lighting would need to be spot on. Ben O’Connell
