“Professional company Rosa Productions was brought on board because they have a first-class track record of delivering high-quality outdoor events with strong links to the BBC, Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund, which has financially supported the project. “It’s all going really well, we have nearly 400 local people involved and the rehearsals are coming together. I was involved with the trust team in the banner painting, which also engaged many local groups.” Why is it important that the Greenham Trust supports arts initiatives like this? “This is special, to celebrate the anniversary, but we want to engage people in the arts with all the benefits – it brings the common into use for a large-scale public event for the first time, and through the year-long exhibition in the West Berks Museum it will also be long lasting and hopefully increase their footfall – a truly great by-product of the initiative.”

Banner walks, talks, exhibitions and events, including the outdoor performance on September 8 and 9 on Greenham Common, have gathered memories of the history of the common, bringing them to life for a younger audience and an exhibition at West Berkshire Museum, opening on September 27, will display its unique heritage. Performers will guide visitors through the Decontamination Suite, which formed part of the USAF Cold War former Wing Headquarters Building. Free tours will take place on September 8 and 9 and have already all sold out. Greenham Trust CEO Chris Boulton explains how the Greenham: 100 Years War and Peace project came about. “We thought it was important to mark our 20th anniversary and the best way to do that was by creating a community event on Greenham Common by the people, for the people, but led by professionals to engage as many people locally as we could and also put Greenham Trust on the national map.
