Gone are sterile spaces and in is the new mood for depth and distinction. You can add personality to a room by playing around with contrasting textures for warmth and interest. It doesn’t have to be complicated, so put a stamp on your bedroom or living space with luscious duvets, throws and cushions. Simple accessories that enhance rather than distract include stacked cushions, appealing artwork, tactile throws and an occasional chair, footstool or small table.

L ayering is the act of building the room from the n Start with the floor. A rug is an easy and inexpensive way to add colour and personality to a room. It is also easy to change so be bold with your colours. n Window curtains or blinds can add softness and texture to a room. If you go neutral then you can use colour in the rest of the room in a more cost-effective way – with bright pillows and colourful accessories. n When it comes to lighting there are many different combinations – central overhead, wall lights, uplighters, table lamps – the main thing is to light a room evenly and keep it as balanced as possible. n You may want to add some smaller furniture items such as footstools and small tables, baskets for storage or even just a bin. Try to keep these small pieces as functional as possible so they aren’t just taking up space. n What goes on the walls. Don’t just buy to fill your walls, make each thing personal to you, it is a gradual process – whether its family photographs, paintings or other artwork, it is something to build up over time. n Accessories – vases, photoframes, souvenirs – can contrast with the look of a room in any way you want. Mix modern and vintage, experiment and don’t hold back from moving things when they don’t look right. n No matter what the season or where you live, try to have something real in your rooms, flowers or cuttings from the garden that are in season – they can really bring a room to life. ground up.
