Camps at Christmas Newbury department store Camp Hopson celebrates its centenary this year. Christmas at Camps was always a time when the mechanical Father Christmas would appear in the window tapping his stick among the array of items enticing customers inside to find Christmas gifts. On Boxing Day, people started queuing outside Camps in the hope of snapping up a bargain in the January sales. Out & About has compiled some old photographs showing Father Christmas arriving at the store and children receiving their gifts from his grotto in the Christmas shop. And who could forget those hardy souls who slept outside the doors to be sure of their place in the sales queue
