Out and About - Winter 2021

# TAKE THE LEAD THIS SEASON

Spring may be far from your thoughts when you’re out and about with your pooch on a chilly day this season. While most of us recognise that it’s a real privilege to walk in our beautiful rural areas, it’s vital to remember that much of the countryside is a working environment for farmers. The calendar is action-packed during autumn and winter for the average sheep farmer. For now is the time that rams are mated with ewes (female sheep), in order to produce next year’s crop of spring lambs. Lots of routine animal husbandry and health-care work is also undertaken by farmers during this time. “It’s really important to keep your pet on a lead when walking near farm animals,” says NFU South East spokeswoman Isobel Bretherton. “This is particularly important right now, as ewes can fail to become pregnant or abort their lambs if chased by dogs. “It’s a crime to let your dog, or dogs, chase farm animals, and the law allows farmers to shoot dogs that are worrying livestock. So be safe, and use a lead when walking your dog near farm animals to avoid a potential tragedy. Out-of- control dogs can inflict the most terrible wounds on sheep – and these poor creatures can die of shock if chased, or suffer a painful death from their injuries. A new law is coming in that will give police greater powers to punish negligent or irresponsible owners.”

Dog owners should also check that properties are dog proof, to prevent dogs roaming freely. Enjoy a safe visit to the countryside with your dog. Remember: • #Take the lead – put your pet on a lead near farm animals. • Follow paths and observe signs. • Bag, take away and bin dog poo. • If chased by cattle, release your dog off the lead and get yourself to safety.
