The Formula 1 of equine, the Scurry Driving Championships, will be making a swift entrance to the main arena. Horse and carriages skilfully steer around multiple obstacles that make it fast, furious and exciting view- ing. Elsewhere across the 150-acre showground, visitors can sample some of the delightful food and beverages available in the food fayre, and watch craftsman skil- fully create another masterpiece in the craft marquee. A group of blacksmiths will be demonstrating the art of creating objects from wrought iron and steel. Visitors will also be able to help them make a pointer stick. This year, visitors will be able to access the Society Building in the afternoon on both days to get up close with the cattle, find out more about them and even have a selfie. “I’m very much looking forward to the Show and looking forward to seeing all the exciting new changes that have been made,” explains this year’s president of the Royal County of Berkshire Show Peter Carlisle. “With a wide variety of activities and events happening across the showground, I’m sure there will be something for everyone to enjoy. “We’re particularly proud to be able to mark the anniversary of the end of the First World War with a magnificent Farming & Machinery Pageant in the main arena on both days. “I’m hoping this year’s Show will be a truly memorable weekend for us all.” Top of the bill The show welcomes back the amazing Bolddog Lings, a grav- ity-defying freestyle motorcycle

The team are really excited about the variety of entertain- ment and attractions, with many new have-a-go activities added to the bill for all the family, as well as spectacular shows and stunts and, of course, the best livestock from around the UK on show. This year, the team have intro- duced a number of new activities and events, as well as upgrading some of the old favourites. The popular Food Fayre has been relocated to Avenue F and the Flower Tent has been relocated to the Village Green and given a complete overhaul, with the addition of a café, new domestic classes and have-a-go activities. The central core of the show- ground features 600 stands sell- ing everything from fine arts to children’s toys and from country clothing to firepits. THIS year’s Royal County of Berkshire Show promises a feast of equestrian action to entertain the crowds. You will find everything from the Formula 1 of equine – the Scurry Driving Championships – to qualifying for the Olympia Horse Show 2018. The British Showjumping International Stairway competition tops the showjump- ing bill, offering an opportunity to see existing British team members and new talent competing for prize money. Spectators can experience the elegance of yesteryear as the Side Saddle Association Display Team takes to the main arena in period costume, demonstrating the graceful art of riding side saddle. The team features riders from Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire, many of whom compete regularly in top-class national and international events. The 2018 freestyle team boasts the Best of British riding and includes top talent in the way of the UK’s first rider to back- flip a four-stroke motocross bike and one of the UK’s top FMX riders, Dan Whitby, who will also be managing the team this year. The team also includes one of the UK’s highly-rated FMX riders and super stylish Samson Eaton, along with young talent tipped for the top, Arran Powley. The team looks to continue to set the standard in FMX show- manship this year and visitors are invited to meet the stars of the show at the Bolddog Lings interactive stand, where they can also find out more about freestyle motocross. Not only have the team appeared in some of the largest shows in the world, but they have also graced the big screen, featuring in Hollywood blockbusters such as Captain America . Bolddog Lings team manager and one of the UK’s top freestyle riders Dan Whitby describes their show as: “More than just freestyle. It’s a non- stop show that will entertain everyone from off-road enthu- siasts to the general public. “It’s a must-see part of any festival and is continually growing in popularity as the awareness of FMX increases.” The Bolddog Lings Motorbike Stunt Team will be performing in the Main Arena on both days of the show. ing equipment and machinery – from ploughs, seed drills and hay-making equipment, to the latest technology such as precision seeding, GPS crop application and yield mapping, which assist getting the nutri- ents in the right place during the following year’s crop. Show chairman Ian Wilson says: “The pageant has been two years in the planning and several ideas have come from it. “It will be a fantastic opportu- nity to see up-close how the large modern machinery that is often an irritating noise in a field near you or indeed in front of you on the road, works and aids in producing food. “The pageant will show machines through the decades and culminate in a harvest demonstration in the main ring.”
However, sad as it is, many did not return. With their absence evermore present in the farming community, it was time to start developing. And so the revolutionary change from horses to mechanical agriculture now spurred into action. Steam engines had been used previously during the war, but they were slow, heavy and couldn’t complete the job to the standard needed. Then the tractor was intro- duced, which was quicker and more agile, and so agriculture was born into a new age of farming. This year, at The Royal County of Berkshire Show, we take you on a journey through the decades since the end of the First World War, displaying a magnificent showcase of farm-

Education is key to British agriculture
THE Newbury & District Agricultural Society’s education programme plays a huge part in their key aims of educating the next generation about Britain’s agricultural industry. Education officer Jan Murray is responsible for a calendar of events such as visiting schools and showing the origins of food, how it is produced and how everyone can benefit from healthily- grown produce. Jan also invites schools to the showground and runs a series of activities, as well as running demonstrations and competitions at other local venues. This year has seen a number of schools take part in British Sausage Week, where pupils get to blind test various sausages, as well as a sausage- making demonstration and fun activities. In the very popular Potato Challenge, school children visit the showground, to take part in a number of potato activities such as blind-tasting and demonstrations as well as planting their own seeds. They then return to the showground in June to find out which school has harvested the most potatoes. Each year pre-schools, primary, secondary, mainstream and special schools across Berkshire are invited to exhibit in the educa- tion tent at the Royal County of Berkshire Show.
Schools can book one or two trestle tables to display their work. There are also competi- tion themes of Work Outside the Classroom or Environmental Artwork . Schools are also invited to bring along groups of pupils to
perform over the weekend of the show, or at the President’s Tea Party, which is held at 4pm the evening before the show. There will also be pond dipping nearby, which is organised by the Berkshire Geoconservation Group.
