Education is key to British agriculture
THE Newbury & District Agricultural Society’s education programme plays a huge part in their key aims of educating the next generation about Britain’s agricultural industry. Education officer Jan Murray is responsible for a calendar of events such as visiting schools and showing the origins of food, how it is produced and how everyone can benefit from healthily- grown produce. Jan also invites schools to the showground and runs a series of activities, as well as running demonstrations and competitions at other local venues. This year has seen a number of schools take part in British Sausage Week, where pupils get to blind test various sausages, as well as a sausage- making demonstration and fun activities. In the very popular Potato Challenge, school children visit the showground, to take part in a number of potato activities such as blind-tasting and demonstrations as well as planting their own seeds. They then return to the showground in June to find out which school has harvested the most potatoes. Each year pre-schools, primary, secondary, mainstream and special schools across Berkshire are invited to exhibit in the educa- tion tent at the Royal County of Berkshire Show.
Schools can book one or two trestle tables to display their work. There are also competi- tion themes of Work Outside the Classroom or Environmental Artwork . Schools are also invited to bring along groups of pupils to
perform over the weekend of the show, or at the President’s Tea Party, which is held at 4pm the evening before the show. There will also be pond dipping nearby, which is organised by the Berkshire Geoconservation Group.
