Eddie Jones and England get set for Six Nations battle

Wales are defending their crown after last year ’ s triumph

Captain Alun Wyn Jones, who is also their record appearance holder, was named player of the tournament, while England ’s Jonny May scored the most tries (6) and teammate Owen Farrell scored the most points (59). England finished second in last year’s competi- tion, having won three, lost one and drawn one. Their draw came during a thrilling 38-38 clash with Scotland a t Twickenham. What success is on off er? The Grand Slam title is awarded to the team that successfully wins all five of their ma tches, but there are also other trophies on of fer within the tournament. The Auld Alliance Trophy, Calcutta Cup, Cente- nary Quaich, Guiseppe Garibaldi Trophy, Millen- nium Trophy and the Triple Crown can be won during the six weeks of action. The Auld Alliance Trophy is one of most recent creations and it’s a cup that is awarded to the winner of the ma tch between France and Scotland with it first being given in 2018 to commemorate rugby players who were killed in the First World War. The Calcutta Cup, as you may know, is one of the oldest trophies to be awarded with it dating

IT’S that time of year again. The 2020 Six Nations Championship is almost upon us with the annual competition kicking off on February 1 and finishing on Mar ch 14. As we already know England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales will be the six teams taking part in the tournament, with all 15 games being televised. These live games will take place in each of the six countries with London, Paris, Dublin, Rome, Edinburgh and Cardiff all hosting g ames. Ahead of the tournament, we have put together a supplement on everything you need to know prior to it all star ting. What happened last year? Wales enter the tour nament as defending c ham- pions, having won all five of their games last year to claim their first Grand Slam title since 2012. Wales beat Ireland 25-7 in Cardiff to become champions of the tournament after an emphatic campaign, which saw them come fr om behind to beat England 21-13 too .

England will be hoping to become Grand Slam champions once again

back to 1879. It’s awarded to the winner of a ma tch between England and Scotland. The trophy was created as a result of a football match that took place between the two nations on Christmas Day, 1872, in Calcutta. The Centenary Quaic h is a trophy awarded to the winners of a match between Ireland and Scot- land and was first contested in 1989. The Guiseppe Garibaldi Trophy was first on offer in 2007, to the winners of a match between France and Ital y. The trophy was awarded as a result of the celebrations of the bicent of Italian rev Garibaldi’s birth in Nice. The Millennium T rophy is awarded to the winners of a match between England and Ireland and was first contested in 1988 as par t of Dublin’s

millennial celebrations. The Triple Crown is contested annually by the ‘home nations’ who are regarded as anyone other than France and Italy. If one team defeats the other three teams, they earn the right to win the Triple Crown. How will England do this y ear? Having had a remarkable World Cup in Japan, which saw them finish second to South Africa, Eddie Jones’ England are favourites to win the Six Nations. England open their account a t the Stade de France, a week before they travel to Murrayfield to face Scotland. If Jones’ squad can pass both of these challenging tests , they will likely have the momentum to finish str ong.

Wales are bidding to retain their title, having won the competition last yea r

England will play Ireland and Wles at Twickenham in this year ’s competition

Games to watch ACROSS the six countries and 15 mouth- watering clashes, there are al ways a number of fixtures tha t stand-out in the calendar . Generally, any game involving England always delivers and their fixtur es with Ireland, Scotland and Wales brings up history f or different reasons. For many years now, England and Ir eland’s contests have always draw in the crowd, with tickets always a struggle for many fans. As the pair are due to meet in Round 3 of this year’s tournament, it’s likely that the outcome could well determine the winner of the o verall competition. With the Calcutta Cup on of fer, as well as brag- ging rights, England against Scotland is always a game that never fails to disappoint. In recent years, with the exception of England ’s 61-21 win in 2017, the r esults have been pretty close. Last year’s 38-38 draw at Twickenham was one of the games of the tournament and considering England have not won since 2017, they will be hunting for revenge at Murrayfield on February 8. It’s also a similar situa tion with Wales and England, with both sides enjo ying their fair share of recent success in the competition. The pair lock horns on the penultimate weekend of the competition and in the last f our meetings, in all competitions , both sides have won two games each. Italy are likely to finish bottom in the standings , but the ‘Gli Azzurri’ have handled themselv es well in previous years. They host Scotland and England in Rome and it’s important not to take them lightly in this year’s championships.
