Out&About lifestyle

The German manufacturing company Ernst Plank was one of the first companies to mass produce steam engines specifically for the toy market and soon became famous for the production of copper and tin toys.

Their output was such that they soon were producing stationary steam engines, steam railway engines and track with some production even happening alongside Märklin.

An approximately 2½ gauge live steam Vulcan 0-2-2 locomotive tender and coach by Ernest Plank Circa 1905 with a pre auction estimate of £500-£800 is a lovely example of such manufacturing.

There are, of course, examples going under the hammer to suit every train buyer and collectors tastes and purses. If Basset-Lowke is your poison, two examples to keep an eye out for are an exceptionally original bing for Bassett-Lowke O gauge electric London, Brighton and South Coast Railway 4-4-2 tank locomotive No11 circa 1912 estimated at £300-£500 and a Leeds for Bassett-Lowke O gauge ‘Pickersgill’ 4-4-0 locomotive and tender No 77. Circa 1922 guided at £350-£500.
