FOR many people Christmas is a happy occasion, one that includes loved ones, friends, family and pets. We sometimes forget that not every animal has a loving family. Unfortunately, the residents at the National Animal Welfare Trust, Trindledown Farm, do not have a forever home yet and so are spending Christmas at the centre. NAWT Berkshire is dedicated exclusively to caring for those animals enjoying the twilight years of their lives. The centre is home to both field animals and domestic pets. The dogs each have their own room with a sofa and television, the cats snooze in their own pen and have access to an enrichment area where they can play and socialise with volunteers and prospective new owners, birds flutter around the aviaries, while the ponies, goats, sheep and pigs graze in the fields on the Lambourn Downs. The centre’s field animals are long-term residents as many have medical conditions, which can be costly. Puddy, the 30-year-old Shetland pony, suffers from Cushings, laminitis and sweet itch. Her care costs an average of £1,900 per year, which is where the trust needs your support. Sponsorship can be a great way to help its goats, sheep, pigs and ponies. Sponsor one of its animals and you will receive a welcome letter and certificate, a postcard from the animals at NAWT, a bi-annual newsletter from your local rehoming centre offering you an update on the animals you have helped, two editions of the trust’s supporter magazine Animate per year and a selection of NAWT merchandise. This also makes a great gift for Christmas. To be in with a chance of winning a sponsorship package for one of the animals for a year, answer the following question correctly and send your entry to the address on page six. Q : How much are the average care costs for Puddy the Shetland pony on average per year?
