Save the Children’s Muddy Puddle Walk
JOIN families and nurseries across the UK and take part in Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children, between May 13 and 19. Peppa Pig is celebrating its 15th anniversary in the UK and to mark the occasion there are a host of events, including the annual Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children to raise funds that will help children around the world. Continuing the anniversary celebrations, this spring will also see the return of the award- winning fundraising event for little ones – Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children. Last year families and nurseries that took part in the event helped to raise £225,000 for Save the Children’s vital work and since its launch in 2017, Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children has generated a fundraising total of almost half-a-million pounds. This year the event is sponsored by The Entertainer (TheToyShop.com) and to celebrate Save the Children’s centenary in 2019, the charity hopes that even more people will sign up, take part and donate. Kicking off on May 13 for a week of fun fundraising, children (and adults too) can pull on their wellies and set off to jump in muddy puddles – real or imaginary. Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children is a bril- liant way to have fun together and enjoy 15 years of Peppa Pig, while raising funds to help make

St Joseph’ s RC Primary School
ST JOSEPH’S Catholic Primary School, a welcoming school with a family feel, is excited to be opening a brand new nursery class in September 2019. St Joseph’s has been rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in March 2018, recognising its strength as a “happy and inclusive school”. The aim is to ensure that children not only succeed academically, but also grow spiritually and morally, developing into fully rounded individuals. The school fosters strong links with the parishes of St Joseph’s and St Francis de Sales and work as a team to support their children’s journey in faith. The brand new nursery class will have 26 full-time places or part-time equivalent. Both 30-hour and 15-hour places can be offered and children can join from the term after their third birthday. The school also offers breakfast and after school club facilities, enabling parents to make use of care at both ends of the day. The new nursery classroom is undergoing a complete refurbishment both inside and out. There is a large, stimulating outside area for the children to play and explore, including a sensory area, music area and a garden. The indoor environment is made up of two large classrooms, with

extensive facilities at Elstree School, in a magnificent 150 acres. Each week, the Early Years children spend time investigating and exploring the natural environment in the engaging woodland area. In the colder months, the children enjoy a hot chocolate, freshly made over the campfire to accompany their picnics. There is a well-resourced, dedicated Early Years Garden, which is in constant use in the free-flow learning environment. Other facilities greatly enjoyed by the children include a vegetable patch, a raised pond and a giant sandpit. A weekly cooking session adds to the enjoyment of the week. All pupils also benefit from specialist PE, French, drama and music lessons. To enhance their learning,
children go on trips connected with their topic. Recent visits have included Wellington Country Park, Marwell Zoo and a local garden centre to purchase seeds for the vegetable garden. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their children’s learning and are invited to termly events. There is a grandparents’ afternoon and both nursery and reception hold parents’ afternoons. The Den Building Day in the summer term of Reception is a firm favourite with all. To find out more, please come to the next open morning on Saturday, May 11, or toddler sessions on Thursday, May 16 or June 13. The offer of home visits and taster days prior to a child starting in the Early Years eases the transition between home and school. They pride themselves in their special and warm environment, influenced largely by the family principles of Elstree. Jubilee Day Nursery offers full- time care 51 weeks of the year, while Jubilee Gems is the term- time nursery option. Both settings are renowned for creating engaging experiences, with a strong focus on outdoor learning. The team believe it is essential that children explore, learn and play, safely and freely. With 60 acres of gardens, private woodland and their own working farm, children participate in magical hands-on experiences every day. Whether they are down in the woods with the Forest School leaders or up on the farm with the farmers, children are given the opportunity to learn from the world around them. Having recently welcomed more than 20 bouncing baby lambs to the farm, all of the children have enjoyed small workshops, learning how to care for the lambs, including petting and bottle feeding them. Farming has proven to have many benefits for a child’s learning development and the aim is to increase children’s appreciation of nature, promote healthy lifestyles and educate them on the life cycle of animals. Pre-school children also benefit from Forest School sessions Rated ‘Good’ from Ofsted in the latest report for Jubilee Gems, Ofsted note that, within the setting, “children and babies are happy, confident and indepen- dent learners. Senior nursery manager of Jubilee Day Nursery Lesley Thompson says that many people talk about a ‘gut feeling’ when they are looking for a nursery. “We like to think the warmth of our team and our environments contribute to that,” she said. “It’s very important to get a feel for who will be looking after your child and for the setting. We often receive comments from primary school teachers who tell us they can recognise Jubilee children for their confidence, independence and joy of learning. “If you haven’t already done so, please do come and visit our nurseries.” If you would like your family to be part of the Jubilee experience you can request a prospectus online or book a visit to see first- hand the fantastic opportunities on offer. The nurseries have attractive and homely spaces on site, both indoors and outdoors. The spaces are age appropriately designed, with areas carefully constructed to meet the needs of children at different stages of development. For example, the baby rooms have black and white areas to visually stimulate our younger children as the highly contrasting colours help to develop their ability to focus their attention and concentration. 7 Give your child a truly unique experience... They enjoyed walking through various different environments while retelling the story – a story loved by generations. The Rocking Horse Nursery is Newbury’s most advanced childcare option, housed in a purpose-built specialist facility, the team care for children from birth to school age. They have six age-related playrooms for the children to enjoy as they progress through the nursery. The beauty of being purpose- built has meant the children can benefit from the nursery’s own library, which is packed with fiction and non-fiction books, the sensory room and unique mini- kitchen for all the budding chefs. Staff are all highly experienced and receive on-going training to ensure they offer the best possible care for all the children. Places are limited and there is a waiting list open for future places. It’s been a busy start to the year at the Rocking Horse Nursery with so many fun activities for the children and investment in the facilities. The year started creatively with some amazing pieces of artwork produced when the children tried marbling. Once the paper was marbled they created planets for the space- themed role play area for the children in Tidal Bay. Chinese New Year Recent research has shown that mixing young and old is beneficial for both generations. Elder people love the energy, naivety and fun-loving nature of children, while children benefit from the attention and caring nature of those older than them. To celebrate Chinese New Year a group of children went to visit the residents at Gracewell of Newbury to share their dragon dance. The children were amazingly brave and all confidently introduced themselves and gave their ages. Their audience were enthralled by the performance and commented on how happy and polite they were. All Aboard! One of the many benefits of the Rocking Horse Nursery is its proximity to the train station at the Racecourse. With the children heading out into the garden in all weather they often hear and see the trains passing. Taking inspiration from the train passing, the children formed their own train in the play racetrack and the nursery has now installed a stunning wooden train in the under twos garden. Ahoy there! The garden at the Rocking Horse is always a busy focus for the children and staff at the nursery. Since the nursery opened they have invested in sun shelters, sand pits and mud kitchens, among other things. This year they have gone big – their very own boat has landed. Back in February, the children loved watching the progress of the development and soon found themselves making their own ‘big holes’ with the diggers in the mud kitchens. The boat is a massive hit and they are looking forward to the summer months when they can really enjoy the rejuvenated garden spaces.
