Central to this vision, St Andrew’s promotes six core values, which are encompassed in all areas of school life: compassion, commitment, curiosity, collaboration, courage and creativity. These values provide a foundation for the pupils, helping to shape their approach to learning, attitudes to friendships and their ability to contribute wholeheartedly to every aspect of school life. St Andrew’s are excited to be partnering with SportsAble, an award-winning charity who specialise in disability sport and who will be using the new sports centre to encourage disabled people to take part in sporting activities. In preparation for this partnership, every St Andrew’s pupil and members of staff recently took part in a series of sensory deprivation sporting challenges where children as young as three experienced what it might be like to participate in sport with a disability. The challenges included blind long jump and wheelchair basketball as well as blindfold football. The event had two important aims – the first was designed to help the pupils to truly understand about diversity, helping them to experience life

The sports centre will house a hall large enough for a full-size tennis court, netball court, four badminton courts or a five-a-side football pitch and will have four retractable cricket nets. There will also be a 25m indoor pool with four lanes and with wet changing rooms for boys and girls. The full-height foyer entrance will boast a climbing wall. academically and encouraging them to broaden their studies through both taking advantage of and contributing to the academic enrichment programme which is a part of Sixth Form life. At the top of the school girls enjoy greater independence in preparation for university and life beyond Downe House. The higher education team helps with A-level choices, university options and applications so that girls are well prepared for writing personal statements and considering how they can add to their experiences to help them stand out from the crowd. In addition, there are many co- curricular enrichment and leadership opportunities, for example, the girl who has enjoyed drama throughout her school career will now find the chance to direct full-scale productions, and many girls take up roles as school officers, becoming positive role models for the younger girls. Alongside a focus on academic studies, Sixth Formers can participate in a plethora of societies or student-led clubs, and join their fellow students at boys’ schools in socials, debates and activities. For example, the popular Phoenix Society allows girls and boys to gain confidence in public speaking. Many girls also gain valuable skills through the Young Enterprise scheme where they get first-hand experience of

There are also opportunities to develop a global perspective: some pupils embark upon exchanges with partner schools around the world; others spend time in the summer months giving hands-on support to international charities, whether it be cooking in an orphanage, painting classrooms or teaching games to children. Some Sixth Formers choose to apply to top universities, art and drama schools around the globe, a trend that is gradually increasing. This is all balanced by an emphasis on well-being through The school’s aim is that at this stage of life, pupils will find personal fulfilment, reap the rewards of their foundation years of study, feel confident in themselves and their friendships and be ambitious enough to aim for the highest possible standards they can achieve in the next phase of your life. It is also one of the most important steps in the

educational journey. So much hinges upon A-level results and the ability of young people to manage their academic studies, become independent learners, cope with stress and develop as young adults. At Downe House in Cold Ash, boarders, day girls, current pupils and new girls from both the local area and across the UK and overseas make up a thriving Sixth Form community, part of a larger community of approximately 580 pupils. Staff and girls here have their sights firmly set on balance and examination results for Downe House leavers showed a 100 per cent pass rate at A-level (or the Pre-U equivalent), with over a quarter of all entries achieving A*, 65 per cent A* to A and 90 per cent A* to B. In addition, girls gain a rich all- round experience, participating in sports, music, drama, various competitions, extra-curricular activities and trips. Many also undertake ambitious charity fundraising projects for both local and international charities. Class sizes are small here, typically around 12 pupils in each class. The school aims to help girls reach their academic wellbeing as the basis for academic and personal fulfilment. The recent set of public

Moulsford Prep School MOULSFORD Prep School is an independent day and boarding school for boys aged 4-13. Set in idyllic grounds of 30 acres

beside the Thames near Goring and Streatley, it provides boys with a first-class education and an excel- lent start in life. Moulsford has recently undertaken a whole-scale review of its curricu- lum and the overall approach to preparing pupils for senior schools. As a result of changes to the entry process to senior schools at 13+, and in consultation with senior school heads, a restructured curriculum has been devised which will be implemented throughout the school from this September. Moulsford’s focus is not only to prepare boys for senior schools, but also to ensure they have the skills for life beyond. So what does the new curriculum mean for Moulsford boys? They will follow a curriculum which promotes intellectual agility, will encourage them to think and analyse critically, make connections across the subjects and give plenty of opportunity for creativity and collaboration. The new curriculum will encourage boys to have a go, take a well- thought-out risk and, on occasion, fail. Exploration and enquiry will be strongly encouraged and Moulsford life will aim to develop boys’ resilience. While exams will remain an impor- tant part of school life, Moulsford boys will continue to learn much more than how to score highly in summative tests and regurgitate learned facts. The clear aim at Moulsford is to encourage all-round achievement

and help boys to find their individ- ual strengths and talents – not only in the classroom, but also on the sports field, in the performing and creative arts and, more generally, as considerate and well-mannered citi- zens who contribute positively to their community. The teaching programme is specifi- cally designed to get the best out of boys, with plenty of practical and outdoor learning. High expectations are set in terms of manners and discipline, with clear boundaries provided. Competitive sport is a vital element of a boy’s development, at whatever age and level they are playing. At Moulsford, the single-sex envi- ronment allows full advantage to be taken of the grounds and sports facilities, with teams and coaching to suit all levels of ability. One measure of Moulsford’s success is the broad range of scholarships and exhibitions awarded each year.

For 2017 at 13+, two boys have gained awards to Abingdon School, two to Radley College, one to Magdalen College School, one to Wellington, one to St Edward’s Oxford, two to Shiplake, one to Pangbourne and one to Cokethorpe, all across a range of academic, sports, music and drama awards. In addition to these schools, others to which Moulsford boys often progress include Marlborough, Eton, Harrow, Bradfield and The Oratory. A daily bus service runs to and from Shiplake via Henley, as well as minibus routes via Watlington, Upper Basildon and Culham, with an additional route planned from Hermitage. Please do join us for an informal visit and tour at one of our next open days, on Friday, September 22 from 10am-12pm or 1-3pm, or on Saturday, September 23 from 9am- 12pm.

Leavers progress to a wide range of secondary schools such as Park House, The Clere, The Abbey, Pangbourne College, The Willink, Salesians and Blue Coat, amongst many other highly academic, sporting and specialist schools. Past pupils regularly get in touch with news of future successes and many pupils have gone on to great careers with former alumni becoming doctors, veterinarians, archaeologists, producers and many more. The school is always pleased to hear (and have visits!) from so many past pupils who are always welcome in school, and they regularly have past pupils with us for work experience. This year, The Cedars is marking its 25th anniversary with celebrations following the annual summer play and barbecue, and was fortunate enough to have almost 300 current and past pupils and their families attend the celebrations. The next Open Mornings are on Thursday, September 21, Thursday, October 19, and Thursday, November 16. A gardening club often ensues during the summer months and, as well as these after-school clubs, daily before and after- school care is provided from 8am to 6pm to help working parents. Technological advances allow The Cedars to keep parents as involved as possible in school life, providing frequent school updates through Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and the website blog. The Reception children have their own online system, Tapestry, which connects parents and teachers through an online portal with daily progress updates and pictures. Weekly newsletters and termly parents’ appointments are provided with hours to suit everyone, as well as the school providing an ‘open door’ policy so that parents always feel welcome to meet with staff on an ad-hoc basis. Within school, the children learn about key values in life with emphasis put on health, the environment, social skills and helping others. The Cedars has a long-standing relationship with Treloars, a school for the handicapped, and our children raise money throughout the year to support Treloars as well as visiting them and spending time around those whose lives are more challenging than our own. One of the most unique and appealing qualities to the school is the small classes, which allow for a tailored education that allows the school to offer both support and opportunities for children of all strengths and abilities. With limited spaces available, the Reception class for 2018 is almost full and there are just a few spaces available in other academic years. The school enjoys a variety of school trips, both as a whole school as well as in their individual classes which contributes to the closeness of all of the children within school, who pride themselves on being supportive, understanding and caring to others of all ages. The school went to London at the beginning of the year to Hampton Court Palace and London Tower, as well as further trips to Kew Gardens, Marwell Zoo and activity days as Ufton Court. Years 5 and 6 enjoyed their annual three-day residential trip to Foxlease in May, where they tackled an array of team- building and confidence-building tasks with the opportunity to assert their independence and grow as individuals. We offer a progressive curriculum alongside Judo, Ballet, Rugby, French, Music, Cookery and many other activities to educate the whole child. At Harriet House we believe in building strong relationships with our families to ensure that your child has the very best start in education, becoming a confident and resourceful learner. Childhood can be very short these days, at Harriet House we intend to make it last as long as possible. Please call us on 01635 200837 to arrange a personal tour around the school with Mrs Hathaway.

received the reward for their efforts,” said headmistress Rebecca Dougall. “Here at St Helen’s we aim to foster a happy environment with relationships built on kindness and respect. “We know that the most lasting successes are based upon devel- oping the self-belief and confi- dence of our girls while main- taining a tradition of high aspira- tion and academic achievement.” The school is divided into four, providing the optimal pastoral care and support needed for the different age groups. From the Junior department – with girls aged from nine to 11 – to the Lower and Middle Schools and Sixth Form, staff are experi- enced at providing the right guid- ance for their students. The students are encouraged to mix through use of the House

system, which competes in big events such as sports day and the House Music Competition. Eager to learn, and motivated to do their best, students take advantage of the many opportu- nities on offer. They are encouraged to chal- lenge themselves and to take risks, both academically and beyond the classroom; and the school is committed to creating a secure and supportive environ- ment in which girls feel they can make mistakes as they learn. St Helen’s place great emphasis on a broad extracurricular programme. A wide range of sports is avail- able, from the traditional rounders and lacrosse through to biathlon, sailing and ballet. Physical fitness is vital and catered for by means of the brand new sports centre, featuring national league standard courts, a fitness suite, an ergo suite and a group cycling room. Students can participate purely for fun or excel through selective teams and groups. Drama is also a key part of school life, from joint Sixth Form productions with Abingdon School through to the play-writ- ing competition being staged and performed in the dedicated Performing Arts Centre. Drama productions are often supported by the music depart- ment, who also put on a large number of productions through- out the year, featuring different clubs and groups from jazz and rock through to chamber music and wind bands.

Abingdon start the new school year with brighter smiles than ever. The last month has seen the outcome of two years’ work for GCSE and A-level students – and the results have been everything they could have wished for. With an impressive 93 per cent A*-B grades and well over a third of students obtaining straight A* at A-level, St Helen’s has confirmed again its position as one of the leading girls’ schools in the country. GCSE results have been equally outstanding, with 92 per cent A*- A and 70 per cent of grades at A*; nearly a quarter of students achieved a clean sweep of A* grades. “We are extremely proud of all our students who have worked so hard over the last two years and

artistically inclined. Every aspect of the curriculum – and extracurricular activity – is catered for in a very up-to-date way. Students achieve excellent academic results and this is unquestionably supported by the range of extracurricular activi- ties that foster creativity, strength, determination and the achievement of personal goals. This well-rounded education encourages the students to believe in themselves and prepares and equips them for life beyond school. Book your place at the open day on, Saturday September 30 or

In addition girls are encouraged to explore their interests and try new things, from Young Enter- prise to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, or take part in any number of trips and excursions from city visits and foreign exchanges to ski trips and outward bound adventures. For the more literary-minded, there are book clubs and creative writing groups in the state-of-the- art library facility and science buffs can take advantage of the new science centre with 12 addi- tional laboratories, break out spaces and a 200sqm science- themed glass atrium. Alder Bridge School THE summer holidays are over – but are you ready for Septem- ber?

If you are gearing up for return- ing towork, have you considered a Steiner-Waldorf education for your child? Set in a semi-rural location in West Berkshire, Alder Bridge School could be your answer. Here, we accommodate children from birth with our Parent and Child Group, which introduces children at the age of three to our kindergarten. Due to demand, a new second kindergarten opened on September 6 this year. The children thenmove into the main school at the age of six and stay with us until they are 14 years old. The SIS Inspection (School Inspection Service) in June 2017 was rated good with aspects of excellence. Children can experience, in a kinaesthetic way, how the subject they are learning affects them physically, emotionally and spiri- tually. Consequently, the learning ‘sticks’ as they have been fully involved in the experience and been able to use play and creativity to make the subject their own. Outdoorplay has beenproven to improve creativity and improved mental and physical health. The classroom has a place in our schools, but its still good old-fash- ioned play and outdoor experi- ences that can produce creative, happy and healthy adults, able to face the rigours of our modern world. Creativity – isn’t this the foundation of a happy and successful life? It’s not necessarily about art or music or theatre, although expressing one’s ideas through art, music and drama is indeed

They learn how to persuade a reluctant friend to join a game, or how to deal with disappointment. They learn to choose the right sequence of branches when climb- ing a tree, and that water and earth mixed to the right consistency makes the best mud pies. If all children are creative, how do we ensure that creativity is retained through their school years? Play doesn’t have to end when school starts. Plenty of time outside for organised games, free play, and formal learning will give children the opportunity to learn and develop through play. A curriculum rich in experien- tial learning and a school which values the arts will nurture that creative spark. Exams? They are important, but at the right time. Creativity is what enables us to innovate and to problem solve, and the root of this creativity is play. If you would like to come and see what we have to offer your family, join us for our open day on Satur- day, September 23 from 10am- 12noon, or pop into the school and we will give you a warm welcome. creative. Rather, it’ s skills like critical thinking, flexibility and the ability to imagine another way and try it out: this is what makes an adult successful in whatever field they are working in, whether they are stepping onto a West End stage or navigating a complex legal case. How do we become creative adults? The roots of our creativity as adults are in our games as chil- dren. All children are creative, from the moment they are born babies are experimenting with move- ment, taking immense pleasure in discovering new things they can do with their bodies. From that moment on they are pushing boundaries, trying things out, experiencing ‘what happens when’ and learning more about the world with every step. A play-based curriculum in the early years gives children the opportunity to learn more, not less. The time that they are not being taught is spent instead on play, during which they are engaged in extensive scientific experiments – social, physical and cognitive.
