HUNDREDS of peo- ple lined the streets of Kingsclere on Sunday to witness the village’s annual Remembrance parade and service. The parade, led by Tre- vor Marriner bearing the standard, made its way from 24 Swan Street to the war memorial outside St Mary’s Church in the vil- lage centre. The procession then gathered around the me- morial, where the Last Post was played by Beryl McMilan and the village fell silent for two minutes. of all the village’s service- men and women named on the war memorial, as well as three others, while pupils from the primary school placed handmade poppies into a sandbox in front of the memorial. The procession then made its way into the church for the service by the Rev Ben Read. Mr Holden said: “We had a really good turn- out on the outside service which shows the support the Legion and remem- brance has from across the village and the com- munity. “Remembrance in the village is always a big thing and we’re well sup- ported by Kingsclere and
the wider community, like Ecchinswell and the other surrounding villages.” Mr Holden said it was “very important” to make the children a key part of the service, to give them an understanding of the importance of the Royal British Legion and the armed forces. “Bringing the children in for the service is very important for us because they’re the future. “They’re the future members of the RBL, the community groups, and of course future members possibly of the armed forc- es. So bringing them in to have that understanding of what we do and why we do it is really key.”

College students remember
UNIFORMED public service students at Newbury College marked Armistice Day on Thursday, with all present on the college’s grounds falling silent for two minutes to join the nation in honouring the fallen. This year’s occasion marks the 103rd anniversary of the end of the First World War. Uniformed public service stu-
dents laid wreaths next to the col- lege’s apple tree – planted to com- memorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day in 2019. There was a brief service, with the college’s chaplain, Caroline Whitehead, addressing partici- pants. She said: “As we look at the poppy today, may it remind us all to be thankful, but also to be hope- ful for the future.”
