NEWBURY & Thatcham Ladies 1st XI suffered a disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Marlow 2nd in North Division 1 of the South Central League. The Marlow wingers re- peatedly drove hard and wide and were eventually rewarded with a well-worked goal. Newbury regrouped and responded to Marlow’s ad- vances with a goal after a smart routine resulted in a rebound to Hannah Jones, who found the back of the net. Marlow, however, did not let up the pressure and in the closing minutes of the first half they scored again. Newbury battled to find that equaliser in the second half, but the visitors turned the screw before the end and added two further goals to se- cure the win. Jess Brewin and Mary Ca- vanagh were on the score- sheet for Newbury 2nd as

Brown pleased with Newbury response NEWBURY Women head coach Darran Brown found plenty of positives in his side’s perfor- mance as they registered their first win of the Championship South West 2 season by beating Wasps 24-5 on Sunday. made a few tweaks so everyone could work on their specific areas. “We haven’t really been playing a lot in the last 18 months, so the knocks we’ve had feel really heav- ier than they were a few years ago when everyone was playing regu- larly.” before hosting Trojans to Monks Lane and Brown is anticipating a difficult game. He said: “We’re expecting a tough one because they have come down a division and they have had some good results.

Newbury’s win lifted them up to seventh in the table and they still have a game in hand on some of the teams above. Brown was impressed with the application from his team after they worked well to improve cer- tain aspects of their game. He said: “It was great, we put a lot of things together that we have been working on and stuff that perhaps hasn’t worked so well in other games really. “We looked at different ways at why results weren’t going our way and we sat down as a group and

“They lost a tough game against London Irish, so they’ll be look- ing to come down and get back on track, but we want to build mo- mentum so we can creep up that table.” Newbury team: Laura Hew- itt, Chloe Hunt, Sarah Coleman, Gaby Slevin, Lucy Mercer, Kirsty Batten, Charlie Dodd, Emma Rob- inson, Sophie Rothwell, Meg Ma- son, Anna Krzyzanowska, Emma Swinton, Emily Kitchin, Lozzie Price-Richards, Lizzie Harris, Kat Smith, El Neal, Roxy Tola, Abi Raymond.

Brown was thrilled to get up and running with a victory and he put it down to an improvement on how they handled the in-game management. “We shut out a lot of opportuni- ties that they created and we had more of a game management pro- cess rather than 100 mile an hour and missing vital decisions. “Our decision-making was far better and we were able to control the game – we did it well and we made some key calls.” Newbury have another week off
