Supersub Megan seals opening win MEGAN Kirby struck to earn Newbury Ladies Development their first win of the season in the Thames Valley Women’s League Division 2 South. Kirby headed home from close range as Newbury edged out Caver- sham AFC 1-0 at Donnington on Sunday. But it was Caversham who started the brighter and Newbury keeper Carly Passfield made a point-bank save from close in to keep them out. Newbury’s first real chance came on 20 minutes when Bex Walker just failed to get on the end of Nicole Beesley’s dangerous cross. Beesley then had a shot comfort- ably saved while Natasha Carroll shot just over. After the break, Newbury gradu- ally began to take control and sub Sophie Papworth fired in a couple of shots. But it was another substitute, Kirby, who was to change the game. A corner from the left by Carroll was turned back across goal for Kirby to nod in from a yard out. This goal encouraged Newbury, who began to dominate, with Walker and Papworth both going close. And Kirby could have had a hat- trick in the closing five minutes as she saw three efforts just drift wide of the target. On Sunday, Newbury’s first team take on Ascot United at Donnington, while the Development side has a local derby against Thatcham at Henwick. Newbury Development : Brown, Sheldon, S Gulliver, Pearce, Turley, Kirby, Carroll, Rodigr ues, Papworth, Beesley, Walker, Abraham, McConnon, Richards, L Gulliver, Mitchell Long faces at Kingsclere their second loss in a row with a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Thames Valley League Division 2 title favouritesLongCrendon. They fell behind in the fifth minute and although keeper Hannah Bennett pulledoff a fine save, Crendonmade it 2-0 soon after. Bennett was then injured and replaced in goal by Hannah Sibley, who was soon called into action. CharlotteMansfieldwent closewith a shot that flew inches over, but unbeaten Long Crendon added two more goals to take completecontrol. Theywent 5-0 upwitha superbcurl- ing shot, but Kingsclere hit back two minutes before half-time when Carly Duckett ’s inswinging corner from the left caught the goalkeeper out and found the back of the net. The second half was a much more even affair as a formation change allowed Kingsclere to stifle the Long Crendon play and get a better grip on possession. Despite this Sibley was called upon to pull off a superb save, getting down low to her right to push a bouncing effort around the post. Mansfield then forced the keeper into a good save when she found space on the edge of the box to let fly and she then drilled another shot just wide. Player of the match for Kingsclere was Sibley, who had an outstanding game between the sticks. Kingsclere are at home to Holyport on Sunday. WOMEN’S FOOTBALL KINGSCLERE suffered

Lee Vincent and Sam Kailus fired the villagers into a 2-0 lead, only for Park to level through Aaron Jones and Brad Cunningham, but Mortimer snatched the winner when Tom Clark turned in TomBrowne’s free-kick. Newbury are also unbeaten, but they had to settle for a 1-1 drawwith Maiden- head Town. Terry Pattern was on target for Newbury. Burghfield also had to settle for a share of the spoils after drawing 3-3 at second-placed Finchampstead. Ollie Brown blasted two of the goals

and Josh Cook added the other. Mortimer Res were overpowered by Division 1 leaders Reading YMCA, who stormed to a 5-1 win. James Croft hit the Mortimer consolation. Goring United’s superb start to the Division 2 campaign was brought to an abrupt halt as they lost 3-0 at Maiden- head Town Res. But their reserve side scored their first Division 3 win after beating Taplow United Res 8-1 with goals from Tristan Allen (3), Josh Wiltshire (2), Oliver Pluck (2) and Javier Corral. Callum Shea (2) and Peter Aust earned Pangbourne a 3-3 draw with AFC Winkfield.

With a number of teams not playing due to waterlogged pitches, Cottage took full advantage of their opportunity and made it three wins from three. Iggy Illot netted five times for the lead- ers, while Harry Monger (2), Luke Pold- ing, Luke Johnson and Jack Stirland were also on the scoresheet. Elsewhere, Woolhampton Cricket secured their first league win of the seasonafter they beat Parklife Rovers 5-3 at home. Branker then whipped in two dangerous free-kicks from the left, both awarded for fouls on Lynch, with Smith a whisker from connecting with the first, and Brown clutching on to the second. The second goal arrived on 80 minutes when Smith broke clear from midfield, rounded the keeper on the left side of the box and squared for Lynch to tap home. Melksham continued to press without creating any meaningful chances as Thatcham got bodies back to protect their lead. Lynch had a great opportunity to score his third when substi- tute Jack Amitaga put him through on goal, but Brown blocked his shot. However, deep into injury time Lynch seized on to Amitaga’s long clearance, nodded the ball past the on-rushing keeper and prodded home into an

Meanwhile, Lynch created an opportunity for himself, only to fire wide from outside the box, and Jordan Alves floated a free-kick narrowly over the bar. Early in the second half, Luke Ballinger went close for the visi- tors with a deft volley from Sam Heal’s deep cross which landed on the roof of the net. But on 64 minutes Thatcham won a penalty when Shemar Pettet raced on to a loose ball on the edge of the box and was tripped while shooting. Melksham’s Matthew Hurley was sent off for his second book- ing, and Lynch confidently despatched the penalty into the top left corner. As Thatcham looked to capi- talise on the extra man advan- tage, Jamal Branker almost added a second with a with a 20- yard rocket which Robert Brown tipped over.

CONOR Lynch fired Thatcham to their first win of the season at a rain-swept Stacatruc Stadium, writes Andy Morris . Melksham began the bright- est, forcing a series of corners and free-kicks. The Kingfishers made some hasty clearances to withstand the aerial threat and gradually settled into the game. With new signing Felix Prud- den and George Smith sitting just in front of the back three, Thatcham kept their shape well and held firm in a scrappy first- half, in which the wet and windy conditions made good football difficult. Melksham’s Felipe Barcelos, returning to the Stacatruc Stadium after scoring 22 times for the Blues last season, forced home keeper George Legg into a save with a crisp low shot, and Legg also denied his strike part- ner Jack Ball.

unguarded goal. Lynch will receive the plau- dits for scoring an excellent hat- trick, but this was a great team response following recent results at home. The Kingfishers sacrificed some of their attacking instincts to keep a disciplined shape and, with the addition of some no-nonsense defending, were rewarded with a clean sheet and three points. A lot more pressure saw Lambourn go 2-0 up with a great strike from supporters man of the match Freddie Boyle, but sloppy defending allowed Wroughton to pull one back before the break. Lambourn continued to press in the second half and further goals from Alec Willoughby and a tap-in from Wheeler secured the points, but Wroughton still had time to grab a second goal.
