New owner for village shop after couple retire THE Holland’s convenience store in Milford has changed hands. The High Street shop, part of the Nisa group, has been run by Paul and Maureen Hollands for 20 years. With the pair look- ing to retire, the shop has been sold to Kularaj Pathamana- than. Tom Glanvill from Christie & Co, which oversaw the sale, said: “This business was a pleasure to market for the own- ers, who were looking to retire after many years of running the hugely popular village store. “The level of interest gener- ated during the lockdown peri- od was exceptional. In the end we agreed to sell to Mr Path- manathan, a first-time buyer who will no doubt bring fresh enthusiasm and energy to the business. “Convenience retail has be- come an incredibly attractive sector to invest in and we are currently seeing an increasing demand for lifestyle businesses such as this.”

A RINGWOOD law firm has been recognised as one of the best in the country in a pres- tigious annual publication. Ellis Jones Solicitors has been listed in the newly pub- lished Chambers UK Guide 2021, which ranks notable firms and lawyers nation- wide. The guide is compiled fol- lowing interviews with cli- ents and other practitioners, and Ellis Jones was singled out for its family law services. It was praised for its “strong reputation” and “likeable and impressive team that provides clients with a cost-effective and highly professional service”. Partners and joint heads of family, Deborah Leask and Sean McNally, were named as “ranked individuals” along with partner Katie Taft who was also described as a “ris- ing star”. Ellis Jones’ commercial litigation department was also listed in the guide for the first time. It was one of
only three law firms in the area to be ranked in this category. The guide stated that its team “goes the extra mile and pulls out all of the stops in urgent matters”. Head of dispute resolu- tion Lauren Day and head of banking and finance lit- igation Will Fox Bregman were both named as “notable practitioners”. Nigel Smith, managing partner, said the team were “absolutely thrilled” to be recognised: “It is another powerful, independent en- dorsement of our services from a highly respected and influential directory. “We are proud to see our commercial litigation servic- es listed for the first time in the new edition and congrat- ulations go to our partners who were individually recog- nised for their excellence.” It comes hot on the heels of Ellis Jones’ listing in the Legal 500 guide in Septem- ber.

Mr Burnie said the compa- ny would be closed for some of the current lockdown but there would be “plenty of odd jobs” the apprentices could under- take. They will remain with the firm for at least two years until they formally qualify. The company has managed to survive despite having a £3m loan application rejected by Santander bank during the first lockdown, as reported in the A&T. Mr Burnie claimed Santand- er’s “unfair decision” was based on financial problems which a small, former part of the firm suffered in 2019 under different management and said it placed the 100 or so jobs at the firm at risk. But he said the firm had weathered the storm by mak-
ing flexible use of the govern- ment’s furlough scheme and its workforce was at 94. Mr Burnie said staff departures had been through “normal change” such as retirement. During the first lockdown it had been impossible for the company to source and acquire components, but Mr Burnie said he expected the supply chain to survive in some form which would enable the com- pany to keep doing some work now. “We are still continuing to build yachts to a very high standard, albeit with a reduced workforce to observe the dis- tancing regulations and re- quirements,” he said. “Our biggest challenge is to convert new sales from over- seas clients, which is 80-90% of our business. “Until international travel restarts, we will have diffi- culty.”
