 By Matt Lawrence, Motoring Correspondent REVISED MPV-cum-cross- over borrows styling and tech from the new Mok- ka, costs from £19,060.

Motors back in 2017 with the express purpose of pumping some much-needed vigour back into the flagging brand. Last year, the all- new Corsa became the first PSA- nurtured model to hit UK roads. Together with its all-electric coun- terpart the Corsa-e, this sixth-gen- eration hatchback immediately jolted Vauxhall right back into rele- vance as the new decade dawned. For its 2020 follow up, Vauxhall deployed its trump card; the all- new second generation Mokka. Braking off the shackles in a big way thanks largely to a highly ambitious, heavily concep- tual design, the quiet, rather straight-laced schoolkid suddenly re-emerged with the best conkers, Pokémon cards or Tiktok profile (choose your poison) in the whole playground. Now, focus shifts to another of Vauxhall’s crossover brethren, the Crossland X. Without wish- ing to be overly pernickety, the X moniker was always a little incon- gruous to say the least. Always

more of a mini-MPV than any- thing approaching a true small off-roader, Vauxhall have tacitly acknowledged this shift in focus as they launch the heavily revised 2021 Crossland – with no X in sight. More than simply dropping a letter from the nameplate, this refreshed version of one of Vauxhall’s biggest selling models aims to inject some much needed dynamism into a car that was look- ing a little staid alongside increas- ingly savvy competitors from the Skoda Kamiq and Seat Arona to the Renault Captur and its very own platform-mate the Peugeot 2008. For starters, the all-important styling takes a good dose of inspi- ration from the aforementioned new Mokka – something which we wholeheartedly approve of. A bold new grille, dubbed the ‘Vizor’ by Vauxhall, dominates the front-end. It spans the face of the Crossland, housing LED lights and the new griffin logo. At the back, mean- while, you’ll find new dark-tinted

tail lights and a gloss black tail- gate, although the overall boot lid design doesn’t differ hugely from that of the pre-facelifted model. Aside from the new family face, wheel designs have been carried over from the Mokka, too. On sporty SRi Nav models, you’ll get a shiny set of 17-inch bi-colour alloys, not to mention contrasting roof colours, faux-alloy skid plates and dark tinted rear windows. For a snip over £19,000, the entry level Crossland SE can be yours for the taking. It’s not exactly festooned with interior goodies, but nonetheless comes standard with a seven-inch touchscreen fea- turing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Stepping up a rung, we find our- selves forking out £20,210 for the Crossland SE Nav Premium, which adds front and rear parking sen- sors, a reversing camera and LED fog lights. The multimedia system also gets an upgrade and now sits inside an enlarged eight-inch touchscreen display. SRi Nav models build on this upgraded infotainment tech with the aforementioned exterior flour- ishes whilst an outlay of £22,610 will get you heated leather front seats and steering wheel as well as a rear-view camera as part of the Elite trim inventory. Finally, Elite Nav models add

wireless mobile phone charg- ing and a 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera for the sum of £23,110. As if that wasn’t enough, Ultimate Nav tops the dizzying list of trim levels with Keyless Entry & Start, as well as silver roof rails, all for £25,615. While agonizing over the smoothness of your upholstery may take as long as the US election result, the choice of powertrains is mercifully straightforward. PSA has laid on a roster of two; namely a 1.2-litre turbo petrol with either 99bhp or 128bhp on tap and a 1.5- litre diesel tuned for either 108bhp or 118bhp. Simple. Transmission comes in either five or six-speed manual form as well as an optional six-speed auto box. This revision could well be the last hurrah for the Crossland. PSA bosses are reportedly keen to clear a path for the Mokka to fly the crossover flag going forward, with the perception that each of these two similarly-pitched models are simply stepping on each oth- er’s toes. They may have a point. Still, the Vauxhall Crossland – minus the X – will soldier on for the foreseeable future at least, with orders being taking as of now and first deliveries expected in early 2021. ■

Not too long ago, Vauxhall seemed to have got itself stuck in a bit of an image rut. Long gone were the days of the rip-roaring Nova GTE, the Ford Focus ST-hunting Astra VXR and the Lotus-inspired VX220 roadster. By the middle of the 2010s, you couldn’t help but feel that Vauxhall was simply bobbing along in the lazy river of motoring, without ever truly get- ting its feet wet. And then the French came along. Peugeot and Citroën pay- masters PSA plucked the drifting griffin from the hands of General
